what are any of these?

plax (ico), Sunday, 1 August 2010 12:25 (fifteen years ago)

Definitely not "Rock Your Body" or "Gettin' Over You", "One" is okay but not brill, I like "We No Speak Americano" and haven't knowingly heard the others.

Without having heard most of these I'd assume the ones I don't know are Tiesto/Van Buuren-friendly stadium trance, right?

Siegbran, Sunday, 1 August 2010 12:52 (fifteen years ago)

None of these are trance.

Siegbran, Sunday, 1 August 2010 12:53 (fifteen years ago)

Apart from the Tim Berg one:

Siegbran, Sunday, 1 August 2010 12:53 (fifteen years ago)

And arguably that's more house than trance.

Siegbran, Sunday, 1 August 2010 12:54 (fifteen years ago)

Definitely not the Edward Maya ones. I'd imagine the blokey chant bit in the Stromae tune is responsible for a lot of spilt French beer.

Pharrell really does not have a voice for house music.

Matt DC, Sunday, 1 August 2010 12:54 (fifteen years ago)

We No Speak Americano is great!

Matt DC, Sunday, 1 August 2010 12:56 (fifteen years ago)

Trance doesn't get you in the charts these day, anyway - even Tiesto tends to release his house tracks as singles. Oddly enough, the only way trance can still chart is when you slow it down and put southern rappers over it (ie, Three 6 Mafia/Pitbull/etc).

Siegbran, Sunday, 1 August 2010 12:58 (fifteen years ago)

Chart successes in what country?

jaymc, Sunday, 1 August 2010 13:00 (fifteen years ago)

I'm assuming the answer is "not the US".

Matt DC, Sunday, 1 August 2010 13:01 (fifteen years ago)

No Speak Americano has that 'sounds brilliant out of cars, kinda repetitive when you hear the whole thing'-ness?

Gravel Puzzleworth, Sunday, 1 August 2010 13:02 (fifteen years ago)

I think nu-Balearic has totally eroded my resistance to the sappier end of trance because I am quite enjoying that Tim Berg track.

Matt DC, Sunday, 1 August 2010 13:03 (fifteen years ago)

Shit, forgot this one:

Sappiness is kind of a defining quallity of summer holiday tunes anyway.

Siegbran, Sunday, 1 August 2010 13:09 (fifteen years ago)

It's funny how 'alors on danse' can go to no.1 in germany but the UK would not accept a French vocal like that.

Vasco da Gama, Sunday, 1 August 2010 13:23 (fifteen years ago)

Alors on danse is greeeat, wow!

Is that Steve Nash putting the blindfold on him?

Gravel Puzzleworth, Sunday, 1 August 2010 13:45 (fifteen years ago)

"One" has gotten some attention in the states via the club. It's been a while since I've enjoyed Pharrell's singing voice and the track ain't half bad. Alors On Danse is the better track though.

Loverboy (Spinspin Sugah), Sunday, 1 August 2010 14:41 (fifteen years ago)

Also one of the big crossovers:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGOCZzvphbY

Siegbran, Sunday, 1 August 2010 15:55 (fifteen years ago)

"One" could be bigger chartwise if they slow it down a bit and get Luda or Pitbull instead of these weak-ass Pharrell vox.

Siegbran, Sunday, 1 August 2010 16:10 (fifteen years ago)

americanoooo

r|t|c, Sunday, 1 August 2010 16:18 (fifteen years ago)

Voted for Yolanda Be Cool in the end, the Stromae track is fun but the crispness of Americano is refreshing in the context of everything else here.

Matt DC, Sunday, 1 August 2010 17:17 (fifteen years ago)

Uh I'm pretty sure K'Naan - Wavin' Flag is the summer anthem of 2010. I know it wasn't created in 2010 but I sure heard it a lot this summer and it has been described as "the people's anthem" -- so, in a matter of words, I am suggesting that this poll possibly lacks credibility.

Green Manalishi (Viceroy), Sunday, 1 August 2010 17:33 (fifteen years ago)

sometimes lists of what is popular in the uk make me feel like i live on the other side of the world

ballerrr (The Reverend), Sunday, 1 August 2010 18:03 (fifteen years ago)

Wavin Flag obv big tune chartwise (and in football stadiums) but a bit too slow/non-dancefloor oriented for summer anthem status?

I'll listen to the others at work tomorrow, but you gotta go a long way to best the big dumb fun of that We No Speak Americano track.

oh my god, David Guetta is tweeting in that video. KILL KILL KILL NOW.

(also the Supertramp sample - blech.)

stereo love

i like we no speak americano too though

teledyldonix, Sunday, 1 August 2010 20:29 (fifteen years ago)

No Speak Americano is massive I think - plays on the NOW CD ads!

If anything but Alors On Danse wins this I'll be amazed and sad, what an amazing banger.

Must be the only place in the world where Black Eyed Peas or David Guetta are not huge. I know it's an island and all but really...

Siegbran, Sunday, 1 August 2010 22:23 (fifteen years ago)

Alors On Dance and Bromance will likely get a UK release once ppl are back from holidays in the Med, that's how the whole summer hit thing works.

It's hard to think of a pop video where the artist is not using his mobile phone.

Siegbran, Sunday, 1 August 2010 22:34 (fifteen years ago)

that "stereo love" i have heard a lot, coming from cars and stuff, but don't ever remember there being a vocal in it.

Efraqueen Juárez (jim in glasgow), Sunday, 1 August 2010 22:36 (fifteen years ago)

I live in Mexico and I can also attest to the massive popularity of all these songs at clubs and parties.

Also 'verano azul', released last year and a blatant rip-off of 'love generation' but inescapable around here on the past months:

Moka, Monday, 2 August 2010 03:59 (fifteen years ago)

'Stereo Love' and 'Alors on danse' are my favorites off of this list of nominees. 'We no speak americano' annoys me in principle but it feels somewhat refreshing when buried in the middle of a set of exhausted autotune crap-house.

Moka, Monday, 2 August 2010 04:12 (fifteen years ago)

Must be the only place in the world where Black Eyed Peas or David Guetta are not huge. I know it's an island and all but really...

Black Eyed Peas are huge here, Guetta is pretty big as well. I don't think any of the other records have much profile here but if they're that massive in Europe then they'll probably get a big push here in the autumn after everyone's back off holiday, which is how these things usually work.

Matt DC, Monday, 2 August 2010 09:29 (fifteen years ago)

English translation of Alors On Danse:

So lets dance
So lets dance
So lets dance

He who talks about studying, talks about work
He who talks about work, talks about money
He who talks about money, talks about spending
He who talks about spending, talks about debt
He who talks about debt, talks about the bailiff
And also about being in shit
He who talks about love, talks about children
Says forever and says divorce
He who talks about his close ones, talks about mourning because problems never come alone
He who talks about a crisis, talks about the world, talks about hunger, talks about the 3th world
He who talks about being tired, talks about awakening, tired from yesterday
So we party, to forget the problems

So lets dance
So lets dance
So lets dance

And you say this is the last time, because only death is worse
When you think everyone is ok and fine, nothing has happened
Ectasy spells problems or it sounds like the music
It gives you a trip and you put your head in your hands praying for it to end
But it's your body, not heaven and you stop listening.
Then you scream harder and it won't stop

So lets sing
Lalalalalala, Lalalalalala,
So lets sing
Lalalalalala, Lalalalalala,

So lets sing
And only when it ends, we dance
So lets dance
But wait, there's more

Siegbran, Monday, 2 August 2010 09:31 (fifteen years ago)

It's not the mobile phone use, it's the very obvious twitter branding.

pidyn pitch (Masonic Boom), Monday, 2 August 2010 09:33 (fifteen years ago)

That Swedish House Mafia track is aboslutely TERRIBLE but I can't stop watching because I want that little bitty teeny tiny synth thing they're making it on.

pidyn pitch (Masonic Boom), Monday, 2 August 2010 09:57 (fifteen years ago)

That's clearly a product tie-in that worked, unlike the twitter/mobile phone one. I want a little tiny white 303 looking thing that turns my saw-toothed waves into little LED pyramids as I play. That's utterly awesome.

pidyn pitch (Masonic Boom), Monday, 2 August 2010 09:59 (fifteen years ago)

Ahhhh, i've heard This Is My Life all over the place and not known what it is. Biiiiiiiiiiig tune!

Andy Cole (Dwight Yorke), Monday, 2 August 2010 10:15 (fifteen years ago)

that synth is apparently real

Siegbran, Monday, 2 August 2010 11:39 (fifteen years ago)

I was gonna say "WANT!" and then I read "The user interface is pretty much what you’d get if you crossed Kate Beckinsale with Scarlett Johansson and added in a touch of Delia Derbyshire. Meow!" and went facepalm.jpg

So clearly this is not going to be marketed to straight women, is it? :-(

pidyn pitch (Masonic Boom), Monday, 2 August 2010 11:43 (fifteen years ago)

more

I was gonna say "WANT!" and then I read "The user interface is pretty much what you’d get if you crossed Kate Beckinsale with Scarlett Johansson and added in a touch of Delia Derbyshire. Meow!" and went facepalm.jpg

In fairness, it probably can't actually act.

Matt DC, Monday, 2 August 2010 11:52 (fifteen years ago)

Ooh, OK, I'm in love again. It's Swedish so it's all clean lines and socialist lack of overt sexism. It's just Synthtopia being dickheads with that description.
