A lot of these are out of print, but easy to find. I omitted the P-Funk All Stars releases.

I used to have the first four of these. Have none of them anymore; probably should have kept at least the first two. Or three. Anyway, Computer Games has "Atomic Dog," but I remember being more fond of Bit Fish at the time for some reason, so I'll go with that. (This weekend, btw, I saw a $1 copy of some LP, from the late '80s I think, that looked like one of his early '80s solo albums, artwise, but apparently it was a collection of eight or so tracks by other acts Clinton was giving support to. Don't think I'd ever seen, or heard of, it before. Didn't buy it. Should I have?)

computer games

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 2 August 2010 14:28 (fifteen years ago)

I voted for You Shouldn't-Nuf Bit Fish. I'm not a big "Atomic Dog" fan, actually – I vastly prefer "Quickie" and "Last Dance." The filler on Bit Fish is also more twitchy and interesting to my ears.

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 2 August 2010 14:30 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, "twitchy" sounds right to me. Think I may have even voted for Fish on my Pazz & Jop ballot the year it came out, fwiw, but I don't have the ballot handy to check.

"Double Oh Oh" (his alleged D.C. go-go move, right?) off Some Of My Best Jokes definitely made my P&J singles list in 1985, in fourth place (behind the Ramones' "Bonzo Goes To Bitburg," Three Johns' "Death Of The European," and the Fall's "No Bulbs"! 5 through 10, fwiw: Singles by Husker Du, Einsturzende Neubauten, Lime Spiders, the Accursed, Beastie Boys, Pogues.)

incomplete poll options but Computer Games for sure. might have voted for Dope Dogs if it was on here tho

Master of the Manly Ballad (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 2 August 2010 15:24 (fifteen years ago)

a lot of the All-Stars stuff sounds like P-Funk by another name (so are, I admit, Clinton solo albums).

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 2 August 2010 15:30 (fifteen years ago)

voting "bit-fish" but that first p-funk all stars album from the early 80s is clinton's best work of the decade & most underrated IMO

that may be the album xhuck's referring to.

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 2 August 2010 15:42 (fifteen years ago)

Nah, I know P-Funk All Stars. (Was "Hydraulic Pump" on that album? That was pretty great, iirc; had the 12-inch.) But the compilation I talk about upthread was from '88 or so, and all groups I'd never heard of before.

xhuxk, Monday, 2 August 2010 15:46 (fifteen years ago)

there are a whole bunch of (primarily Japanese, I think?) P-Funk All Stars comps from the 80s, I haven't heard most of them but they usually contain a track apiece credited to Parliament, Funkadelic, Zapp, Bootsy, George, etc., among other less notable folks (Trey Lewd - lol). Hydraulic Pump is on the Urban Dancefloor Guerillas. that album is really solid

otoh comp in question was a dollar = yeah I would've bought it

Master of the Manly Ballad (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 2 August 2010 16:02 (fifteen years ago)

Actually, this is the comp - George Clinton Presents Our Gang Funky, 1989 according to Wiki. Also looks like it features some big names contributing, so I was sort of wrong about "all groups I'd never heard of before," though outside of Garry Shider the artist monikers aren't familiar to me.

Computer Games is a complete classic, the last track One fun at a time is possibly the most underrated song in George Clinton's back catalogue.

Some of My Best Friends Are Jokes and R&B Skeletons in the Closet are both mixed but have some really great moments.

Kitchen Person, Sunday, 8 August 2010 01:16 (fifteen years ago)

I voted T.A.P.O.A.F.O.M because it contains the gorgeous and trippy "New Spaceship".

Zooster vs. The Slapp (Capitaine Jay Vee), Sunday, 8 August 2010 01:36 (fifteen years ago)

I didn't even consider TAPOAFOM because it is clearly a P.Funk All Stars album. Bit-Fish for me, bought the cassette the first week it came out and memorized that shit in a month.

T Bone Streep (Cave17Matt), Sunday, 8 August 2010 03:27 (fifteen years ago)

QUICKIE is a great drunk chant.
