Legendary Shack Shakers - C or D?

Surprised there isn't a thread on these dudes. After hearing for years about about how great these guys are, finally checked out Believe, and must concede that this is definitely a cut above this sort of thing. I absolutely understand why people are into this band. I also hear that Duane Dennison is playing guitar with them now, so I'll definitely be checking out their latest as well.

But by "this sort of thing," I mean hillbilly-exploitation punk bands who all seem to use a similar formula (above-average musicians playing country / blues licks, shirtless cowpunk singer channeling David Yow and singing about hellfire and damnation, etc). So maybe this should also be a S&D for bands like this - Does Slim Cessna's Auto Club fall into this category? Haven't heard 'em.

Both great live bands. I've never sought out a recording by either, though.

Saw a band this summer I liked a lot, United Steel Workers of Montreal, who work the hellfire/damnation angle with less psychobilly and more Tom Waits.

Have written lots about both the Shack Shakers and Slim Cessna's Auto Club on Rolling Country this year, starting at the link below (but just do control-F for more.) Guess I'd say the Shack Shakers' downfall, or what stands in the way of me liking them more, is the singing. Definitely prefer the Woodbox Gang and Red Swan I've heard to Shack Shakers or Cessna Etc., but I do like all four bands.

An six-year-old review I wrote about Red Swan, now on their CDBaby page:

There are also pretty entertaining c. 2006 Don Allred and George SmithVillage Voice reviews of the Shack Shakers you might be able to find on line somewhere, if you poke around enough, but the Voice archive is a pain these days -- couldn't track them down myself just now.
