i know only four people are gonna vote in this but i'm interested to see what the distribution of those votes is - i've got it narrowed down to like seven

terry squad (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 01:40 (fifteen years ago)

prob gotta be track 1 for me

righteous lecoq (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 01:52 (fifteen years ago)

it was mine for the longest time too, but nowadays i like "high lonesome" the most i think, and a bunch of others like "miles davis and the cool" and "cassanova, baby" and "meet me by the river's edge" are up there too

terry squad (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 01:55 (fifteen years ago)

This is one really great album. The first four songs are the winning streak IMHO.

Marty Innerlogic, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 11:50 (fifteen years ago)

title track

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 15:06 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah the title track. This is so much better than the new one it's not funny.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 15:44 (fifteen years ago)

high lonesome

chrisv2010, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 17:28 (fifteen years ago)

yeah I'm voting "High Lonesome," great chorus and there's something so much more ingratiating to me about quoting fuckin Counting Crows than all the classy on the nose reference points that are usually in their lyrics

The chickbad from the ludicrous 'ludacris' song (some dude), Wednesday, 4 August 2010 18:23 (fifteen years ago)

they quote counting crows in that song? i thought it was springsteen.

chrisv2010, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 18:31 (fifteen years ago)

whoa i had no idea "high lonesome" was a consensus deep cut!

one of the many great things about the songwriting here (and something that's lacking a little in the new one i think) are the great bridges/codas in a lot of these songs. none of these songs are very long, by any means, but it's a testament to the strong songwriting that they all feel fresh however many dozen times i've listened to this. (think "when our boots they hit the ground..." from 'high lonesome' or "as we go down, down, down" from 'miles davis' or the honestly breathtaking "and now i driiiive the 101..." from 'meet me by the river's edge'.)

First song

kornrulez6969, Friday, 6 August 2010 02:37 (fifteen years ago)

bu_ump

terry squad (k3vin k.), Saturday, 7 August 2010 15:47 (fifteen years ago)

This gonna sound ridiculously corny indie of me - but the title song can still reduce me to a big weepy mess in the best way possible.

Tantrum The Cat, Saturday, 7 August 2010 23:33 (fifteen years ago)

"...River's Edge" is a close second.

Tantrum The Cat, Saturday, 7 August 2010 23:34 (fifteen years ago)

That's a godamn Springsteen reference. I'm on fire

chrisv2010, Sunday, 8 August 2010 00:13 (fifteen years ago)

not tonight

terry squad (k3vin k.), Sunday, 8 August 2010 01:03 (fifteen years ago)

is no one gonna rep for anything on the back half of this record other than "river's edge"?

terry squad (k3vin k.), Sunday, 8 August 2010 02:59 (fifteen years ago)

System, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

aw "cassanova, baby" and "the patient ferris wheel" totally deserved votes

terry squad (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 00:09 (fifteen years ago)

seven years pass...

This Friday, SideOneDummy Records will release the original demo sessions for The ’59 Sound, a glimpse into the band’s first stab at a record that would take on meaning few imagined

*drools*

k3vin k., Thursday, 14 June 2018 01:36 (seven years ago)

oh man, they CRUSH this version of "the patient ferris wheel". brian's vocals are as good as I've ever heard them -- really hamming it up too, without being over the top

k3vin k., Friday, 15 June 2018 04:34 (seven years ago)

REALLY leaves you wishing this version had that sick coda, as great as the vocal-less version here is

k3vin k., Friday, 15 June 2018 04:37 (seven years ago)

Rosamilia: It was the coolest thing ever at that point, a label showing us around the office. They had nachos just there, ready to go. Joe said something like, “Tuesdays, we nosh on ’chos.”

just sayin, Friday, 15 June 2018 05:53 (seven years ago)

That whole oral history is just so earnest and innocent. I love this:

Fallon: I remember the tape echo being a big thing. People were like, “What?” and I was like, “Yeah, the tape echo. What’s the matter with you? Have you never listened to the Clash, or Bruce Springsteen, or literally any band?” This is a thing. It’s the whole sound. But it wasn’t common for a punk band.

Which sort of gets at the core of the group, dopey kids whose frame of reference is Floggy Molly and Bouncing Souls and Hot Water Music or whatever, yet don't know the Clash from Bruce from who knows what, because they're so wrapped up in the '90s/'00s alt-punk scene.

All the Bruce stuff is great.

(Bruce) just walked up and was like, “Can I play that song with you?” My first answer to him was not, “Yeah.” My first answer was, “Do you know it?”

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 15 June 2018 11:26 (seven years ago)

man I've actually never taken the time to look at the lyric sheets. "great expectations" kind of cuts me open

k3vin k., Tuesday, 19 June 2018 15:45 (seven years ago)

the lyrics on the record are generally fantastic

paul mccartney & whinge (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 19 June 2018 15:54 (seven years ago)

aw i'm gonna listen to this today, it's been... almost ten years

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 19 June 2018 16:10 (seven years ago)

"Miles Davis & The Cool" – 4:11 1

best song on the record imo, title track can't even touch it

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 19 June 2018 16:11 (seven years ago)

there's something so much more ingratiating to me about quoting fuckin Counting Crows than all the classy on the nose reference points that are usually in their lyrics

lol i just recorded an album where i deliberately referenced "raining in baltimore" in a fast punk song. think the sensibility of this record stuck with me more than i was even aware of

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 19 June 2018 16:12 (seven years ago)

weird side note but i think the title track's music video is the first youtube video i ever saw in 480p, i was like "wow everything is so clear, i guess this is the future"

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 19 June 2018 16:15 (seven years ago)

I actually think I prefer the demo version of "ferris wheel" to the studio version. even more animated, if that's possible

k3vin k., Tuesday, 19 June 2018 16:54 (seven years ago)

I worried and stalled every night of my life

k3vin k., Tuesday, 19 June 2018 17:32 (seven years ago)

ugh I think my vote is "great expectations" now

k3vin k., Wednesday, 20 June 2018 17:02 (seven years ago)
