More music like OMD?

Besides the obvious really big names, does anyone have any recommendations for OMD like bands, new or old? I just bought a new CD by the band Soviet, which is fantastic. Very OMDesque.

i hope i'm getting the name right- VNV Nation. which i think stands for "victory not vengence". check 'em out...

oh, and my ex would have me include dead or alive. :/

mike (ro)bott, Tuesday, 6 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the new soviet album 'we are eyes, we are builders' makes me nostalgic for the 80s and OMD.

keith, Friday, 9 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Some of the Fischerspooner songs reminded me heavily of OMD, one is titled 'Horizon', the other one is titled 'Tone Poem' which reminds me especially of one of the later tracks on 'Dazzle Ships' where the keyboard line seems to go in and out of tune. Also, if you hate Fischerspooner because they are too cheezily sexy, these songs (at least Horizon) lack cheezy sex.

"More music like OMD?"

I never thought I'd live to hear that question spoken. Must be getting old...

Oh I just remembered: you should check out Creme Blush, a NY band consisting of 2 females--one American, one Japanese. They do a cover of OMD's "Enola Gay."

this is where i like to wheel out my alba's mate's theory that the arcade fire are OMD's spiritual heirs. but it's late and i'm tired and i'll only make an arse of it.

as theories go, it's very, very good.

gratuitious plug for my friend andrew's absolutely godlike synthpop band swimmer one. special note for ian riese-moraine: keep refreshing the first page and you should come across a reference that will make your heart sing ;)

red turns to "deep sleep" and its even better b-sides

jimmy glass (electricsound), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 01:49 (twenty years ago)

I haven't heard or thought about that song in a while! I'm definitely in agreement about Red Turns To... although I haven't heard the flipside.

Ian Riese-Moraine: a casualty of social estrangement. (Eastern Mantra), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 02:04 (twenty years ago)

in a week or so i'll be sharing some very-nicely-transferred-from-vinyl mp3s of the b-side on slsk..

jimmy glass (electricsound), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 02:07 (twenty years ago)

(once i finish declicking them)

jimmy glass (electricsound), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 02:07 (twenty years ago)

keith m (keithmcl), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 02:08 (twenty years ago)

kon kon / information society get compared to human league but i hear omd influences.

I haven't heard or thought about that song in a while!

you mean you didn't hear "krafty" and think, fuck me, they've ripped off red turns to?

Sweet.

What? Grimly, you're kidding, right?

I haven't heard "Krafty" yet, actually.

I think Mark Nicholas, who worked for years as Cosmicity but has now shelved the project, is a great talent, and his early work is very reminiscent of early OMD. His vocals sound more like Neil Tennant, however.

You can listen to several tracks at his website here: http://www.cosmicity.com/listen.html ("I Want You" is probably the best track listed there, but "Awake" is the most OMD-ish.)

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

Seconding the love for Swimmer One.

Michael Lambert (Michael Lambert), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

thank you, michael: i shall pass your kind words on to andrew and he will be delighted. you know about the two songs i put up for sharing here, don't you?

What? Grimly, you're kidding, right?

no! i've mentioned it here before. the bassline and rhythm is identical.

hang on, ian: you haven't heard krafty? how no?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 11 August 2005 10:58 (twenty years ago)

(although i'm sure by now those two tracks are up on the official swimmer one site too.)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 11 August 2005 10:59 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure how I haven't heard it, grimly. Probably because I'm in America, where it didn't chart at all, and I don't know anyone around me who has Waiting for the Sirens' Call.

Ian Riese-Moraine: a casualty of social estrangement. (Eastern Mantra), Thursday, 11 August 2005 11:18 (twenty years ago)

It's not really an excuse, but I've had no opportunity to hear it.

Ian Riese-Moraine: a casualty of social estrangement. (Eastern Mantra), Thursday, 11 August 2005 11:19 (twenty years ago)

i shall attempt to rectify that for you when i get home, ian.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 11 August 2005 11:20 (twenty years ago)

Cocteau Twins - Love's Easy Tears EP sounds a bit like variations on "Souvenir".

Ian Riese-Moraine: a casualty of social estrangement. (Eastern Mantra), Thursday, 11 August 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

And I think Kitchens of Distinction could've done a really good cover of "She's Leaving" (which also sounds strikingly similar to early New Order, not that it's any real surprise). Probably because it sounds a bit like "Quick as Rainbows".

Try "La Notte La Notte" by Etienne Daho (Virgin, France) - OMD guested in a video from this album.

SoHoLa (SoHoLa), Thursday, 11 August 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

And I think Kitchens of Distinction could've done a really good cover of "She's Leaving"

[blissful reverie]

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 11 August 2005 12:56 (twenty years ago)

yo, ian. do you have iTunes?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 11 August 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

(e-mail me using the weblink thing to avoid derailing the thread ... further)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 11 August 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

Grimly, if that's the Cloudbusting cover and the remix of WJMMFOS, i have them. I'd really love to put Swimmer One on in Dundee sometime, but never get around to it.

Any idea when they plan to release an album?

Michael Lambert (Michael Lambert), Thursday, 11 August 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

I don't, sorry. xpost

Ian Riese-Moraine: a casualty of social estrangement. (Eastern Mantra), Thursday, 11 August 2005 22:38 (twenty years ago)

Good for you! I can't figure out why I didn't get around to ripping that one myself now, but I'll certainly have to pull it out for a re-listen. I remember liking the b-sides better, too, if I recall correctly. It does my heart proud to hear about people ripping vinyl. I really think anyone who has rare vinyl should learn to rip it cause it's really very easy. I plan to have the Foreign Press 12"es up this weekend.

The Spiderwebbed Wilderness (Bimble...), Friday, 12 August 2005 04:45 (twenty years ago)

ian: gaah!

michael: it's cloudbusting and the largs hum, which is still the best song they've ever done.

they said the album would be this summer, so they're running late ... i know andrew will be up to his eyes with edinburgh festival stuff right now. i still hope it'll appear this year, but they're such perfectionists that they'll spend as long as possible tweaking and fiddling. 2008 would probably be a reasonable guess :)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 12 August 2005 06:22 (twenty years ago)

Just bought Solvent's _Solvent City_. All instrumentals. Reminds me a lot of early OMD. Say, "Electricity" minus the vocals.

erb, Friday, 12 August 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

I can't get iTunes because I have Windows 98 (my computer's OLD!).

"The New Stone Age" almost predicts Xiu Xiu, and I could see The Cure covering it as Andy sounds very RS-esque.

"International" is a bit Cocteau Twinsy in sound, too, if my memory serves me well.
