i adore strumming music, even though the mp3 i have of it cuts off.

i really like "schlongo!!! daLUVdrone" despite it's lame title - beautiful, massive waves of church organ building and building and building as he opens stops and attacks keys.

"continuous sound forms" (strumming music for harpsichord) is nice if a little too static for my tastes; "alloy" has two simple exercises in sine wave drone and the title track, a really nice primitive drone noise thing with tony conrad and some others.

also... "karenina" is 2 cds of weird falsetto vocalizing and harmonium, a tribute to a dead dog. it's good stuff if you can stand it... i always associate it with richard youngs' "sapphie" (also a tribute to a dead dog) because i went to the record store to buy both in some kind of weird dead dog album buying spree and they were sold out of both.

'Four Manifestations on Six Elements', issued by Staalplaat, is prob. my fave CP alb, but - surprise - he's best experienced live. Saw him play a few years ago at the Purcell Rooms - he performed a variation on 'Strumming Music' and snapped a couple of strings on his Bosendorfer piano, which is some kind of feat. He brought all his teddy bears w/ him and when one of the strings snapped I thought a bear had fallen into the piano! After playing for abt an hour he drank a big glass of cognac. CP still had incredible stamina and concentration - when the music gathered pace it sometimes sounded as if there were loads of backing tapes playing (there weren't, of course) - the appreciative audience settled into a kind of collective trance - just amazing.

Just got an advance of a thing called "Palestine/Coulter/Mathoul: Maximin" from Young God Records -- it's Charlemagne Palestine's original recordings "interwoven" (press kit's term, not mine) with new sounds, either played or "found" (random tapes etc). Apparently done in collaboration with Palestine himself. It's a pretty deeply mood-altering record -- parts of it a such scary good drone that they make me want to join a cult or something.

Play it really loud and all SORTS of interesting stuff happens. It's got three listenings in two days around here -- pretty good given the huge backup of stuff piled up by the stereo waiting to be heard.

I love the advice in the press kit regarding bio/discography: "Type the name 'Charlemagne Palestine' into Google or a similar search engine and you'll find a wealth of information." Gee, thanks!

I went to the London show. It was probably the best thing I've been to all year.

The church was pretty empty and so people were just lay down on the pews and sprawled out on the floor by the altar.

I mentioned it briefly in another thread...

I found it breathtaking. Had figured it on it being a bit of an endurance test, what with it being a 5 and a half hour organ drone and all, but it was actually totally engrossing and deeply rewarding. 7 hour (including rehearsals) live recording audio DVD forthcoming on Blast First (petite)!

i saw him last year in farringdon and he was very funny and his double-harpsichord piece was pretty great. i don't think i could have handled five hours of it, though.

does he pass around cognac for every show, by the way?

Ha, not this time around. He was up on the first floor and the audience was dotted all around the church. I got quite confused at one point when I opened my eyes and saw him stood a couple of feet away from me and no longer sat at the organ. I must have looked quite shocked as he felt compelled to mouth 'toilet' at me and grin.

Saw him last night in Philly for a concert coinciding with the big Tony Conrad show up at the ICA.

I loved it, though some friends of mine were not as enthused.
