lots of songs come to mind for me written from the perspective of the person hurt by another, directed at the person who hurt thembutI'm having a much harder time coming up with songs from the one who did the hurting, expressing regret and a desire to fix things.
I get this *feeling* from Harry Nilsson's "Don't Forget Me" and Nina Simone's "Everything Must Change," but neither is explicit about it lyrically. Radiohead's "Motion Picture Soundtrack" seems about this, obliquely, or at least in part.
Somehow that's all I can come up with at the moment, but I'd love ILM to weigh in with what I'm missing...

Peter Hammill, "If I Could":
You must be crazy to stay here, and I'll be crazy when you go;though there's so much I want to tell youall the words come out too slow.I've been locked in my problems, you seemed prepared to wait...now that I know I'm going to lose youall the words come out too late. There's no promise I can give you that you wouldn't know was fake;though I just want to be with you, there's no show that I can make. And in the morning, when I wake and find you dressingI can tell that it's on your mind to go for good;I know that all this time I've kept you guessing, but I'd tell you if I could.

i don't hear any regret in "can we still be friends." that one's about moving on and not wasting time feeling hurt and actually breaking up as friends, isn't it?

"Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen. of course. [as for versions, John Cale's moves me most, but Cohen's brilliant and broken last verse never makes it into the covers...]
