I'm just going off what's on "Staring at the Sea" and "Galore," two VHS tapes I watched the shit out of in high school (well, w/Galore I'd usually just stop the tape after 'Never Enough').

I watched these tapes a lot w/my friend who was deaf and she loved "The Walk" so much because some gramma is signing the lyrics in it. My friend got so emotional every time, like "why doesn't every video have this? It is a thousand times more enjoyable this way!"

spanikopitcon (Abbott), Friday, 6 August 2010 17:53 (fifteen years ago)

Lullaby used to scare the crap out of me.

Trip Maker, Friday, 6 August 2010 17:54 (fifteen years ago)

I like the juxtaposition of snow and palm trees in "Pictures of You," but purely for the powerful claustrophobic nature "Close to Me" conveys I have to give it the nod.

short list:

In Between Days
Close to Me
Just Like Heaven
Hot Hot Hot!!!
Lullaby
Never Enough

people are for loving (HI DERE), Friday, 6 August 2010 17:59 (fifteen years ago)

I would love to read a defense of "Hot Hot Hot!!!"

spanikopitcon (Abbott), Friday, 6 August 2010 18:55 (fifteen years ago)

that's the puppet one, isn't it?

people are for loving (HI DERE), Friday, 6 August 2010 18:57 (fifteen years ago)

That's the one where they're all in Ray-Bans and on-their-knees shorty guys.

spanikopitcon (Abbott), Friday, 6 August 2010 18:59 (fifteen years ago)

wasn't there one where they were all marionettes? I thought that was "Hot Hot Hot!!!"

people are for loving (HI DERE), Friday, 6 August 2010 18:59 (fifteen years ago)

They're all on a little puppety stage in "Never Enough" but still not puppets...not puppets like in an N*Sync way or something.

spanikopitcon (Abbott), Friday, 6 August 2010 19:02 (fifteen years ago)

okay I'm just crazy then

strike "Hot Hot Hot!!!" from my shortlist

people are for loving (HI DERE), Friday, 6 August 2010 19:04 (fifteen years ago)

always been a fan of the "Caterpillar" video. so that one

frap rock (crüt), Friday, 6 August 2010 19:08 (fifteen years ago)

I like both "The Hanging Garden" and "Charlotte Sometimes" but lol no way is either of them the best.

Also really, really like the slow receding tracking shots in "A Night Like This"

people are for loving (HI DERE), Friday, 6 August 2010 19:13 (fifteen years ago)

Man "Charlotte Sometimes" gets so much shit but it has such a true place in my heart.

spanikopitcon (Abbott), Friday, 6 August 2010 21:08 (fifteen years ago)

i love never enough. thought that was so cool when it came out.

scott seward, Friday, 6 August 2010 21:10 (fifteen years ago)

it's too bad they've never been able to fully recreate "The Hanging Garden" live because the recorded version is fucking brilliant

people are for loving (HI DERE), Friday, 6 August 2010 21:15 (fifteen years ago)

Love Charlotte Sometimes (coz I swear that place looked JUST LIKE MY HIGH SCHOOL) and Hanging Gardens, also loved Caterpillar Girl because, well, it's Kew Gardens, and that's probably the best R. Smith has ever looked.

But what was the one with them all in the cupboard that gets pushed over a cliff into the sea? I don't even like that song that much, but that video was so great. Was it Close To Me?

Oh, and Lovecats. That just looks like it was so much fun to film.

let me mansplain that to you (Masonic Boom), Friday, 6 August 2010 21:16 (fifteen years ago)

That was "Close To Me", yeah. For the Mixed Up version they even did a sequel video for it (that was kind of silly)

people are for loving (HI DERE), Friday, 6 August 2010 21:19 (fifteen years ago)

Why was it Inbetween Days was such a better song, but got such a shit video? (the animated cartoon sock, kicking band members in the arse. What WAS that about?)

let me mansplain that to you (Masonic Boom), Friday, 6 August 2010 21:21 (fifteen years ago)

Can only remember the vids for Close To Me and (I think) the Walk (the straightjackety one?).

Chaim Poutine (NickB), Friday, 6 August 2010 21:22 (fifteen years ago)

They were at their peak of good-lookingness from A Forest---->Caterpillar. Robert was at his peak, imo, in The Walk. Except I think their secretly hottest member was Roger O'Donnell. I sublimated so much unexpressable lust in high school, watching & thinking baout Cure videos.

spanikopitcon (Abbott), Friday, 6 August 2010 21:23 (fifteen years ago)

holy lol I'd forgotten about "The Walk", lol @ Lol

people are for loving (HI DERE), Friday, 6 August 2010 21:24 (fifteen years ago)

It is the best! It's so bad-artsy, and their dancing is like the only music video I can watch & instantly cop the moves. Whether they should actually be copped is another question.

spanikopitcon (Abbott), Friday, 6 August 2010 21:24 (fifteen years ago)

Wait I'm thinking of "Let's Go to Bed," in both cases. Nevermind!

spanikopitcon (Abbott), Friday, 6 August 2010 21:25 (fifteen years ago)

I like to think "The Walk" resulted from Tim Pope going "Well we did a goofy video for "Let's Go to Bed" so let's do a more serious on...HOLY SHIT WHAT WAS I THINKING." Then he did "The Lovecats" and everything after that = piece of cake.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 6 August 2010 21:27 (fifteen years ago)

Problem is, in the Pornography era Cure, Simon was so pretty that it was hard to watch anyone else on screen. (Or maybe it was just the size of his hair obscuring everyone else.)

I'm going to have to watch Lovecats to make sure I don't love that more than Close To Me.

The thing is, the Cure were too intimidating when they were at their prettiest. I kinda liked the actual *videos* more when they were drunk and ridiculous.

I can't remember the video for The Walk at all, I try to remember and just see Let's Go To Bed. x-post ha ha maybe I need to rewatch them.

let me mansplain that to you (Masonic Boom), Friday, 6 August 2010 21:27 (fifteen years ago)

wait "Hot Hot Hot!!!" IS the creepy puppet one!

people are for loving (HI DERE), Friday, 6 August 2010 21:29 (fifteen years ago)

Robert is so obviously tripping balls in Lovecats. And the bit where the kitten bites him, I swear I must have watched that 2000 times in high school.

let me mansplain that to you (Masonic Boom), Friday, 6 August 2010 21:30 (fifteen years ago)

Wait no, he's just drunk off his ass in Lovecats. It's Caterpillar Girl where he's tripping balls, there's a bit where you can see him actually catching trails off his hands as he dances in Caterpillar Girl.

let me mansplain that to you (Masonic Boom), Friday, 6 August 2010 21:31 (fifteen years ago)

"Never Enough" is really great, too

man it's just now striking me that I pretty much only listen to live versions of these songs and have kind of forgotten the studio versions of a bunch of them

people are for loving (HI DERE), Friday, 6 August 2010 21:34 (fifteen years ago)

Oh my god the TROUSERS in Caterpillar Girl. I had forgotten OK, it was the 80s. But my goodness.

let me mansplain that to you (Masonic Boom), Friday, 6 August 2010 21:37 (fifteen years ago)

The 80s. Two words: STIFF STUFF

let me mansplain that to you (Masonic Boom), Friday, 6 August 2010 21:41 (fifteen years ago)

I love the "Charlotte Sometimes" video - pretty girl, gothic mansion, band in overcoats looking - errr - gothic. And those hilarious "quick! turn and look at the camera!" shots of each bandmember. Perfect video for a perfect Cure song.

Zooster vs. The Slapp (Capitaine Jay Vee), Saturday, 7 August 2010 06:17 (fifteen years ago)

"Close To Me" over "A Night Like This," but I love the Tim Pope era pretty much entirely

da croupier, Saturday, 7 August 2010 06:25 (fifteen years ago)

also "The 13th!"

da croupier, Saturday, 7 August 2010 06:26 (fifteen years ago)

Let's see if I'm the only vote for Fascination Street.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Saturday, 7 August 2010 08:43 (fifteen years ago)

I have just posted three really depressing things in a row on ILX, so I just wanted to look for a thread that would make me uncompromisedly happy. And I think early to mid period Cure videos are that thing.

I am still torn between the drunken shenanigans of Lovecats and the perfect claustrophobia of "OMG, we've been in this band/on this tourbus for too long" metaphor of Close To Me.

let me mansplain that to you (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 7 August 2010 09:44 (fifteen years ago)

HI i can't offer any thoughts on the cure i'm afraid but cure fans might be interested to know that nina sky have done a freestyle cover of "love song" on their new free ep - http://ninasky.bandcamp.com/album/the-other-side - and it's GREAT

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Saturday, 7 August 2010 11:21 (fifteen years ago)

Is the first mention of Close To Me the regular one and the second the Mixed Up version (with the horn playing octopus) ?

StanM, Saturday, 7 August 2010 11:35 (fifteen years ago)

I remember being generally disturbed by The Hanging Garden so that. Lullaby and Close to Me won't be needing my vote.

Haunted Clocks For Sale (Dorianlynskey), Saturday, 7 August 2010 11:46 (fifteen years ago)

voted "Close to Me" but you can't go wrong with around a dozen or so. the Cure sure knew what to do while MTV was popular.

Bee OK, Sunday, 8 August 2010 04:06 (fifteen years ago)

haha, actually meant "Lullaby"

Bee OK, Sunday, 8 August 2010 04:08 (fifteen years ago)

In the videos from "Seventeen Seconds," pre-makeup, Rob looks like Ben Affleck. It's weird. See this still from "A Forest" por ejemplo:

spanikopitcon (Abbott), Sunday, 8 August 2010 04:09 (fifteen years ago)

I have the VHS Staring at the Sea, but I've never watched it because I bought it at a yard sale after I had already gotten rid of my VCR...so the only one of these I've seen is Close to Me, despite listening to the CD like 1 trillion^1000 times. :(

"goof proof cooking, I love it!" (Z S), Sunday, 8 August 2010 04:11 (fifteen years ago)

I don't think they ever put it out on DVD. A real shame.

spanikopitcon (Abbott), Sunday, 8 August 2010 04:12 (fifteen years ago)

i remember the Lazerdisc of this

i actually own the VHS as well, it's somewhere

Bee OK, Sunday, 8 August 2010 04:16 (fifteen years ago)

Robert's allegedly working on some put it all together DVD set. We'll see.

BTW the Nina Sky cover Lex mentions is worth the listen! Beats the fuck out of that 311 version.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 8 August 2010 04:30 (fifteen years ago)

This is very tough, but I'm going with "Caterpillar Girl", just because.

Lostandfound, Sunday, 8 August 2010 07:48 (fifteen years ago)

Ha, sorry, I guess it's just called "The Caterpillar", but hey, it shouldn't be, right?

Lostandfound, Sunday, 8 August 2010 07:52 (fifteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

Results make total sense.

spanikopitcon (Abbott), Monday, 9 August 2010 23:08 (fifteen years ago)

That they literally are in a closet that gets pushed out of England in "Close to Me" is too perfectly done.

Michael Train, Monday, 9 August 2010 23:36 (fifteen years ago)

Lol farted

disastrous sixth series (MaresNest), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 00:12 (fifteen years ago)

Since this is the active Cure thread. I'm desperately seeking the extended version of Primary, InBetween Days and Close To Me. None have been issued on CD as far as I know and the vinyl copies are pretty expensive right now.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 00:15 (fifteen years ago)

The people with piss-poor hair have spoken

20 Tiny Pingas, 20 Tiny Cantoes (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 00:16 (fifteen years ago)

I don't think they ever put it out on DVD. A real shame.

I had thought that the Greatest Hits dvd that was released in tandem with the album of the same name had combined both Staring at the Sea and Galore into one release, but it actually just cherrypicks the videos for songs that appear on the cd. This is a serious oversight on Elektra and/or Fiction's part.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 00:17 (fifteen years ago)

Maybe I meant overlooking instead of oversight. Screw it...this is a serious mistake.
