P win because record-shop employees (I'm just guessing) have problems avoiding the trap of visibly trying too hard at times

Playing 'Glory Box' while DJing a garage-punk club was really funny although I was the only person who thought so. I'm still getting shit about it a week later

I'll swing the other way; Laika always sounded like their great idea was going to lead to others, Portishead like they were scared to move too far away from the crackly shadowy Schifrin sample lest anyone forget who they were. Oh, and Sounds of the Satellites is magnificent.

Record-shop employees? Guy Fixsen was a studio engineer from an early age (washing out the mugs, hoovering under the Neve), Margaret's path from sometime UVS cellist/bassist/whatever to Moonshake less well known. Rest of the live band are borderline- jazzboes, aren't they? I hope they make another record.

Portishead dated on arrival; Laika did not.

seven years pass...

You sure about that, Pete?

Ned Raggett, Monday, 30 November 2009 20:35 (fifteen years ago)

is laika still extant?

mookieproof, Monday, 30 November 2009 20:40 (fifteen years ago)

laika the dog died in the orbit in the late 50s.

aw man

Laika over P-head for me.

Margaret was the touring bassist in Wire last year, dunno if she'll be recording any future material with the lads.

She makes eco-friendly candles now or something, doesn't she? I think her full-time job is at the BBC and she did a post-grad law degree. I've no idea what Guy is up to.

Not quite sure why Ned felt the need to revive this after 7 years.

some questions burn slowly

Yeah, someone should revive that Beatles v Freddie and the Dreamers thread from Jun '63. Some folks in there are gonna look stoopid.

Michael Jones, Monday, 30 November 2009 22:51 (fifteen years ago)

I like the little bit of Laika I've heard a little bit, but not Portishead (who I've heard more by and don't like at all). (Why bother voting at all then? Need something to momentarily turn my attention to, that's all.)

i dig laika. i cannot stand portishead at all.

I was actually listening to Silver Apples of the Moon today and stumbled across this thread in searching the archives. So why not a randomish revive?

New Portishead > Original Recipe Portishead

It strikes me as an odd comparison given they don't really share a genre. Portishead vs. Tricky vs. Massive Attack appraises apples, while Laikavs. Insides vs. Lamb (maybe) adjudges oranges.

Dunno. I prefer Dummy to Third, but both are way better than self-titled.

It might have been a bit different in '97 or so, but these days:

Sounds of the Satellites & "Looking for the Jackalope" > New Portishead > other Laika > old Portishead

satellites and apple are such lovely albums. relics of their years maybe (no more than stereolab) but undeniably great albums. I didn't like the last one (or two) much though.

Nothing sounds like Lyin' Goat, such a timeless song.
