I love that Jacobs Optical Stairway album.

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 12 August 2010 20:58 (fifteen years ago)

yeah jacob's optical stairway is exactly what i mean

didn't 4 hero put out a whole ep of straight detroit style techno tracks at one point?

this one samples my favourite detroit track, bango "mystical adventure"!

Come to think of it, I have a 12" on Creative Source? that is called Detroit but I can't remember what it sounds like right now. Will try to find it on discogs/youtube.

Jazz Juice is such a terrible name.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 12 August 2010 22:24 (fifteen years ago)

it is and the labels on Precious Materials were pretty cheap too.

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 12 August 2010 22:32 (fifteen years ago)

lol at jazz juice

what an amazing tune though

Good idea for a thread, rio.

your original display name is still visible. (Display Name), Friday, 13 August 2010 00:33 (fifteen years ago)

Some Kirk Degiorgio's "As One" project kind of walks that line, maybe a bit more jazzy though.

I think junglish breaks + detroitish synths may be my favourite combination ever. So I hope this fits where you're going with this thread:

Guh, no embedding. Does this work? Sound quality is a bit muddier and it's cut slightly short in the mix.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_A_KwDTO6t0

You may notice that the mixtape art from this youtube is the same as on the Urban Shakedown upthread - is a pretty good mix if you like this sound: http://www.discogs.com/Various-Jungle-Massive-Collective-2/release/89024

More like that last one, pls.

I've lost track of which one was which at this point (either SOS or Photek I think) but there was one where the bass seemed to zip about like a lost pong ball between notes. Not so much that it wobbles, but enough that there was a real sense of movement in the portamento. It really feels a bit like being rattled around a videogame or a pinball machine - but in a really good way.

Except maybe Doc Scott

See also: the entire Bukem Essential mix from July 95, J Majik pre 1997, Ed Rush - Kilimanjaro, anything by Source Direct and more recently Marcus Intalex - Outer Space and too many others to mention

As per the post above, sci-fi strings + breakbeats = my favourite music ever

Iain Macdonald, Monday, 23 August 2010 13:28 (fifteen years ago)

Perhaps not 100% Detroit-y but I've got a track here, which is one of my favourites from my old mix tapes, but I've never been able to find out what it is.

Anyone have any ideas? I used to think it was an early Certificate 18 track as I think the mix was by someone involved in the label, but I'm pretty sure I've heard them all now:

CJ Bolland was mostly a techno rather than a drum and bass producer, but Electronic Highway from 1995 was a pretty interesting attempt to marry techno and trance synths with d&b breaks.

Tuomas, Monday, 23 August 2010 23:13 (fifteen years ago)

Anyone who's interested in the kind of stuff that has perhaps more techno than d&b flavour should check out this compilation, it has loads of gorgeous synths combined with breaks. One of my favourite electronic comps of all time!

Tuomas, Monday, 23 August 2010 23:22 (fifteen years ago)

Bumping to see if anyone is up who may have any ideas about the ID above. If not, if anyone knows a good forum for old track IDs I'd also be happy.

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 24 August 2010 09:06 (fifteen years ago)

Re track ID - sorry don't know but the track mixed in at the end is DJ Tamsin and Monk - A Better Place ( DJ Trace remix) which I think dates it to the tail end of 1993.

This is a good forum for IDs - their knowledge goes to very obscure levels:

Thanks Iain, you were actually closer than you thought, the track is actually the Bay B Kane remix of the same track:

Very nice melding of the prettier, more melodic side of DnB with some cool tech flourishes

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Thursday, 11 June 2020 22:58 (five years ago)

yeah. it's maybe not classic detroit - sounds a little more digital than that - but has that glisteny string sheen. plus i wasn't quite sure where 'the' DnB thread was!
