Dagenham Dave or Roy's Keen Smiths? Pah.

Dagenham Dave. But best song is How Soon Is Now.

J, Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

How Soon Is Now is completely overrated. Good, yes, but overrated.

Nicole, Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

the charmed version is good tho

Yay Love Spit Love, I guess.

Best song...hm, too many choices.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

"Last of the Famous Int'l Playboys" has always been a favorite of mine.

paul, Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Presumably he's never written a whole song: just lyrics and melody.

the pinefox, Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

"Suedehead" duh

Aaron A., Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Everyday is Like Sunday: "Come Armageddon, Come Armageddon, Come..."

The one with the line: "I will be/in the bar/with my head/on the bar." That song ("The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get," or whatever it's called) plays in my imagination as a rocksteady number sung by Pat Kelly, with a "Why waste my time/you know you're going to be mine" coda/homage/digression stuck on at the end for no reason other than it fits perfectly.

If we're talking just his contribution (ie, the lyrics), then you cannae beat "Cemetary Gates", which is the anthem of all English literature students in love, and thus owns.

Dom Passantino, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

"Suedehead" was the first (for me) and it can perfectly do

Arantxa, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Then there's the Divine Comedy's "The Booklovers," when you're by yourself. I guess.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

"Suedehead" is great, yeah, but I'm going with "The Queen is Dead."

Lyrics from his newest songs here (or for the show on the 11th, if the page has changed). Judge duly, or not.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

"hairdresser on fire" - it makes me feel like i'm running amok in london. for a montrealer, that's a tough feeling to achieve.

cybele, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

There's something about the way he expresses himself in "This Night Has Opened My Eyes" which just slays me every time.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, now that you mention it, that one's a secret favorite -- it captures an all-around mood perfectly.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll take the wussy Ned approach :P, but then at least narrow it down to "Suedehead", "How Soon is Now", "Headmaster Ritual", or "The Boy With the Thorn in His Side". Put aspects of those together to make the ultimate Morrissey song!

Vinnie, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't give me that, ya punk. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

But it's true! I'm not sure I've seen one of these kinds of threads where you commit to an answer (barring MBV, of course). Be decisive, man!

Vinnie, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Trying to nail down a 'best' song really is impossible for me for so many acts, though. My second fave band of all time is the Chameleons -- couldn't begin to pick just one song if I tried.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

God. Hard question. Erm. Well, here's a few of my favourites. There are too many: "Suedehead"; "Bigmouth strikes again"; "That joke isn't funny anymore"; "Panic"; and, oh yeah, almost forgot, definitely "How soon is now". Love that song. Anyone like "Frankly Mr Shankly"? What a cool tune. Not a favourite but so funny. :)
