here's my picks:

monte cazazza - to mom on mother's day/something for nobody

essentially backed by tg, these two singles sound much like the tg records from this period -- distorted tape delay textures and primitive drum machine & workouts. vocals deal with usual tg style darkness, a tribute to mary bell the 1960s child killer and a cover of a brion gysin poem, with the added drama of monte's camp californian drawl

thomas leer & robert rental - the bridge

beyond classic primitve synth stuff. everyone should hear this

dorothy "i confess"

i like this because it completely confounds what tg & industrial records were perceived to be about. it's also a really fun little pop song written by alex ferguson from alternative tv. "softness" on the b-side is a kind of spy-beat funk thing with breathy vocals

clock dva - white souls in black suits

this is the original release of this album on cassette. really cool percussive post punk w/ various reed instruments, miles away from the dark electronic music adi newton later became known for

chris carter - the space between

again, everybody should hear this. some of the best primitive synth music ever made

richard h. kirk - disposable half-truths/cabaret voltaire - 1974 - 1976

i guess some would argue these are only for the hardcore cabs fan, but i'm only a casual fan and this is some of my favourite cabs related music. the richard h. kirk solo album especially is genius, just one of those albums you can turn up really loud and get completely lost in -- disembodied voices floating in and out of the stereo mix, grungy tape loops and rusty drum boxes

The only one of these I've heard is Monte Cazazza - To Mom On Mother's Day (7", Ltd) 1979 which is quite good.

I've got one song by Dorothy on a comp which may or may not be on that single but it's not the title track. That is also quite good.

a fucking stove just fell on my foot. (Colonel Poo), Friday, 13 August 2010 14:54 (fifteen years ago)

"primitive drum machine & workouts"

should say, "... drum machine & synth workouts"

the two monte cazazza singles are included on the worst of monte cazazza comp, its pretty good, but these two records are way better than the later atom smashers stuff

Of the ones I've heard, "Space Between" wins

tom d: he did what he had to do now he is dead (Tom D.), Friday, 13 August 2010 15:30 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i'm thinking the same. closely followed by the bridge and disposable half-truths. maybe it's not fair to pitch singles or eps against albums but i think they all hold their own as individual artifacts

that habit kick man (r1o natsume), Friday, 13 August 2010 15:56 (fifteen years ago)

I've never heard IR 0006 / IR 0012 / IR 0014 / IRC 27 / IRC 28.

WSB one is good!

these all have something to recommend them (although I haven't heard the two live tapes). "Slow Death" has the classic "No Rule", the SPK single is an early high point, Welch & Dorothy singles are both classics and classy, and those last 5 albums are totally solid. The Bridge is great and has been praised on other threads.

it's remarkable to me that I can still sing "slow death," not having heard it in like 20 years

gross rainbow of haerosmith (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Saturday, 14 August 2010 21:22 (fifteen years ago)

Have only ever heard the Clock DVA (which I love), so I oughta track some of these things down.

Chaim Poutine (NickB), Saturday, 14 August 2010 21:25 (fifteen years ago)

i honestly didn't realise the bridge was so well loved on ilm already, apologies if i sounded condescending

i guess i need to give the leather nun 7" a few more listens before i cast my vote

disposable half-truths is sounding pretty good right now

Well the Bridge is one of my favorite records ever, so that's a no-brainer.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 17 August 2010 13:50 (fifteen years ago)

i love 'Interferon'

gnarly sceptre, Tuesday, 17 August 2010 15:39 (fifteen years ago)

it's all awesome stuff though despite my being a huge Cabs fan, I never liked their more formless early experiments as much as the later stuff. Interesting to hear, but not something I rock out to all the time. The Space Between is awesome, as is the SPK single. The Clock DVA album is cool but the next one was better, I think.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 17 August 2010 15:57 (fifteen years ago)

can I vote for all of these

How could you forget the crazy hooker? (HI DERE), Tuesday, 17 August 2010 16:39 (fifteen years ago)

Burroughs imo. That record is grrrrreat.

not everything is a campfire (ian), Tuesday, 17 August 2010 16:57 (fifteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Tuesday, 17 August 2010 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

somehow i expected either the space between or the bridge to take this. interesting result. gonna relisten to the burroughs right now

still haven't got around to the thirst, is it much like the first clock dva album? as much as i like the first one, i'm way more of a fan of the later stuff that's just adi newton. everything from the hacker up to and incl digital soundtracks is so classic
