Not a videogame thread, I barely played it but the soundtrack is on heavy rotation.

Mainstream answer is

but I might have to go with

The music in this game IS really good, but there are already a couple of VGM threads (which have mentioned DKC iirc).

This is the Video Game Music Thread

Video Game Music

P.S. My favorite is probably the music for the swamp levels.

Joanie Loves Shakuhachi

thumbs up.

I think, tbf, that if any one game soundtrack deserves a thread of its own, it's between this and Ocarina of Time.

<3 ocarina of time soundtrack... and ocarina of time in general

teledyldonix, Sunday, 15 August 2010 16:06 (fifteen years ago)

the lava world one is a jam too, though it doesn't have that jarre vibe of the best ones

ciderpress, Sunday, 15 August 2010 17:29 (fifteen years ago)

I always thought it sounded like leftover scraps from the album "Invisible Touch."

fear mongrels (Abbott), Sunday, 15 August 2010 17:32 (fifteen years ago)

whenever i write synth-based music it tends to come out sounding a lot like the music from this game stylistically, which is weird since i never really played the dkc games a lot in my childhood

ciderpress, Sunday, 15 August 2010 17:35 (fifteen years ago)

Should probably keep to the other thread, but I have yet to hear better OST vidgame music than what's on the original NES Metroid and it's SNES sequel Super Metroid.

Another Genesis connection, the rhythm of this is totally from "In the Air Tonight"

xpost (And yes I know that technically Metroid 2 was on the Gameboy).

Nate Carson, Sunday, 15 August 2010 17:38 (fifteen years ago)

i like how with a lot of the best-written video game music you can picture the full band / full orchestra piece the composer had in their head despite the low polyphony and fidelity of the actual sequence

ciderpress, Sunday, 15 August 2010 17:41 (fifteen years ago)

Nate - I don't know if that was intentional, but that's on-topic because the composer behind those games is the composer for the new Donkey Kong Country game to be released on the Wii. He also did the Metroid Prime music.

That Maridia theme is gorgeous. I never got that far in the game. u_u

Joanie Loves Shakuhachi (corey), Sunday, 15 August 2010 17:44 (fifteen years ago)

you should replay it! it's probably my favorite nintendo game ever, and the maridia area is particularly wonderful and creepy

You've got a point with In the air tonight..

When I'm absent-mindedly listening to this soundtrack the transition at 1:10 here knocks me over.

The guy did the soundtrack for Marble Madness, too, probably my favorite video game soundtrack ever. I mean, it gave me a reason to keep playing that sadistic game.

reminds me of the transition to the second half of Aeroplane's 'Too Hard' remix!

"In a snow-bound land" sung in Mandarin

Some pretty good cover versions on this remix album. David Wise himself contributes with one.

Oh I'm such a fan of this game and its music. I think the song on the mines level is my favorite one... love the synth that enters around the 35 second mark and the sort of humming response that comes a minute later.

composed during what he called his "experimental Paris phase".

great phase to have

super metroid music SO AMAZING. i think one of my fav video game music moments was hearing the fade-in for the brinstar green/jungle area for the first time.

three years pass...

So David Wise returns to Nintendo and Donkey Kong many years later for the WIi U game 'Tropical Freeze' - the soundtrack is being uploaded and I think it's already safe to say he's still got it and that this is DKC2 levels greatness. I will push hard for this to be the first game soundtrack to make it on ilxor year-end lists.

Heh, that Mandarin cover you linked upthread was done by me and my friend (who sang). Absolutely adore the DKC soundtracks. I recently finished another vocal remix of the lava level that has yet to come out.

Vinnie, Wednesday, 19 February 2014 14:19 (eleven years ago)

Oh! Nice job. You should give the new one a spin as well, think we'll see a cover album of it in a few years.
