The Beatles Complete on Ukulele

I've been following this site assidulously since first finding it a few months ago:

http://www.thebeatlescompleteonukulele.blogspot.com/

Every week, they post an mp3 of a Beatles song done on ukulele. They're working their way through the entire catalogue, 185 songs in all. I think most of the artists are just semi-professional, but a couple of weeks ago they posted something from Victor Spinetti, and just last week there was a (really good) version of "I Should Have Known Better" by Samantha Fox. In true Beatles style, there's even been a break-up between the two guys who run the site. (I continue to follow David's continuation of the original site; the other guy, Roger, went somewhere else.) Anyway, they've got a schedule of upcoming posts down the left side of the page, and if you look way down the road, they're got Paul McCartney lined up for a cover of "Something" on July 24, 2012, followed by "Everybody" finishing up with "The End" the following week. This is really quite an amazing site.

The essays are very readable and knowledgable too.

I really like the Because version and the accompanying essay.

Yeah, I rather like some of these. Some are crap. The whole ukulele thing's a bit of a red herring, it's often incredibly far down in the mix.

I've been downloading everything, but I haven't listened to a whole lot yet--I'm going to burn everything onto CD at some point. But I had the same impression: "There's a ukulele here?" And yeah, the accompanying write-ups are very thorough. I'm just amazed at how much work has gone into the whole project.

Marc iv, do you hate Beatles songs, or just the covers? Just askin'...

I find with Beatles covers, even more so than with other covers, the less like the original, the better chance you have of coming up with something. Trying to cover a Beatles song faithfully is usually a dead end. So from the small amount I've sampled from the Ukulele site, where some of it was unrecognizable, I'm hopeful. I started obsessively collecting Beatles covers online about five years ago. I sometimes wish I'd never started--it's endless. I'm up to almost 300 albums' worth, and another 500+ loose songs. So that's a big factor in why I find this site so useful and interesting.
