EVERYBODY READ THIS! BIG IMPORTANT ALERT! ILE and ILM are moving to a new address and server!

Well, you probably noticed that Greenspun was down for a lot of last week. We don't know why, and the Greenspun server is provided as a free service, so there's no one to complain to, and nothing to stop it going down forever one day. So, tired of the increasing frequency and length of the outages, the 12ft lizards that rule over you have been making plans. Andrew G has offered us space on his server to host it. I've written new message board software, which some of you may have tried out during last week. It keeps the general look and simplicity of the old site, but with a load of new features. There'll be a FAQ on the new site explaining what's new. David R Popshots has registered ilxor.com for us.

First thing to say, there's no need to stop posting here or start posting there yet, every single message posted to ILE and ILM up until the move date will be copied onto the new server - you'll be able to post to old threads like you could before.

The move is scheduled in for one of the days this weekend (18th-19th August). There's still work to be done from now until then, so it might not happen until the following weekend, and we don't know exactly which day either. There'll be an announcement on this thread as soon as we do.

The plan is to have a fixed point where we all start using the new board - when you came back and see the WE'VE MOVED messages you should no longer post here, and go and post there (we don't have a way of locking the board). Here's what will happen on the day of the move:

  • One of the boards will be password protected
  • We download all of the messages and post them onto the new server
  • When the new board is ready the old board will be unlocked, plastered in WE'VE MOVED messages. We'll probably put automatic redirects on as many threads as possible (linking to the new threads themselves).
  • Everyone goes and posts on the new board
  • We repeat with the other board, and there may be some overlap when both are password protected - they may reopen simultaneously.
(Mark S is doing the downloading cos he has broadband and I don't, so thanks to him)

We'll have someone come back afterwards to make sure it's still obvious where we've gone.

The new server is already available at ilXor.com, you can try it out, sign up a user account, and post to the threads we started last week during the outage. I've disabled starting new threads until we actually move there but otherwise it's all fully working.

Questions?

this is great...thanks to all who made this possible.

ILX is suddenly infused with a spirit of eschatalogical expectation.

Graham, you're brilliant. Sorry to be such a pest.

Frank Kogan, Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Graham clearly is the Man. Said it, will say it again. Hurrah!

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I was looking for a thread to say this -- the new board is fantastic, so thanks so much to you and everyone else that worked on it. It looks to be a pretty painless changeover & the look & feel is just right.

Mark, Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

NB we do have a way of locking the board :)

Tom, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Do we? (apart from password protecting it?)

Graham, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Well sort of. We can remove permission for new questions to be asked - what I was planning to do was do that and then monitor the boards so googlers get redirected when old threads come up again.

Tom, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll be away this weekend, so don't break my fucking server or I'll kill you all ;)

Andrew, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

we will behave as meek teenagers who have nevah thrown a party and whose rich parents are going away for a week and leaving them alone and trusted to be grown-ups hurrah!!

I LOVE ILM. I'm fairly new to the board, but this shit is great. Thanks Graham and all involved; I'm having SUCH a good time, with all manner of well-informed and opinionated people like me.

No, like me you mean. But you're doing fine. ;-)
