Anybody heard it? Any good?

Please say yes, I've been wanting Robert Plant to make a grate solo album for years

John Darnielle, Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Out of curiosity, what do you think of the early eighties stuff? There's some wonderfully strange/beautiful songs there.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Plant did some OK stuff while solo, and probably best of all (at the time), most sounded very little like Zep (including the stuff that sampled Zep). I remember a couple of good tunes from Now and Zen (Heaven Knows was pretty good, in a dreamy 80s kind of way), and "Mood for a Melody" was a lot better than the idea of Plant singing adult-contemporary synth pop would seem.

dleone, Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I had "Manic Nirvana" (on cassette! good heavens) and thought it was pretty good -- his use of a sample of Wavy Gravy on one song seemed to really lend a really ominous quality to the sampled voice, and a number of the songs just seemed really interesting to me -- I think he makes thoughtful, kind of risky records. They don't usually hang together very well but their bright spots are, I don't know, different in a really good way.

While I generally don't believe in guilty pleasures I've always felt sheepish about being interested in Robert Plant's solo stuff. Reviews of the new one sound pretty intriguing; almost bought it today. Hence the question.

John Darnielle, Sunday, 11 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

One of these days I'll get around to picking up The Principle of Moments -- my introduction to Plant and then through him to Zeppelin was actually "Big Log" and "Mood for a Melody," and they both sounded great on early eighties top forty, I have to say. That album that "Little By Little" was off of also seemed interesting -- doesn't Dave Q have something to say about all this?

Ned Raggett, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There's a brief q&a with Plant in this month's Spin that's worth reading.

J Blount, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought his version of 'Morning Dew' on Top of the Pops was very good. He looked bloody awful, but he sounded really good. I think there was an e-bow involved, but someone else will have to confirm that.

PJ Miller, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i have ALWAYS loved his voice, but i like zep anyway sofgyuhgvo q9wdb: i assumed (possibly unfairly) him w/o em wd be ordinaire, and have never bothered trying it

mark s, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i was just surprised to see him performing on VH1 and covering love's "a house is not a motel." must hear the solo album soon.

your null fame, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

saw arthur lee last night in NYC who played "a house is not a hotel" praising Robert Plant for keeping the song alive...really cool

Steve K, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

He's always been a huge Love fan -- in fact, I have to give major credit to Plant; for years it's been clear that of all the high-profile musicians of his time/place he's about the only one who keeps listening to all kinds of music from all over the damn place and celebrating it loudly. Led Zeppelin showed that well enough (I'm sure DeRayMi can comment on the obvious influence of a number of Arabian singers), but I remember being utterly befuddled to read a comment from him from some 1985 interview or the like talking about how his favorite bands then included Let's Active, This Mortal Coil and the Swans!

Ned Raggett, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Plant album is good. I got the promo a month or two ago and I was really into it for a while... but I don't listen to it much anymore. Some good covers. I don't think I would recommend buying it though. Not too much staying power, knowwhatimean?

Yancey, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

He was wearing a Love sweatshirt on TOTP. He had it tucked in.

PJ Miller, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Always hoped they'd release a "Best-of" Robert's solo stuff. There've been some fine singles in there over the years, notably "Little By Little," "Heaven Knows," "In the Mood," etc. Despite it's crap title, I always enjoyed "Big Log." (ooh, that sounds rough out of context, doesn't it!)

Alex in NYC, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Interesting but not particularly good. His voice is going, poor fellow. Yeh, not a keeper but check it out if yr curious.

teeny, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like "Tall Cool One". I bet most of the albums (ok, CDs) are in the bargain bin used, I must remember to get one. Yes, why is it embarassing to show an interest in solo Plant? I feel it too, but Zep is like one of the greatest ever right? I'm not sure where this comes from.

Sean, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Got it yesterday & listened today -- I think it's pretty great. The closing number's not much, but the cover of "Hey Joe" breathes new life into a song I'd thought rendered permanently bloodless through overplay. Like it like it like it. Nice. Deserves at least as much attention as that new Springsteen one's getting.

John Darnielle, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw the VH1 thing and thought it was surprisingly fantastic, great band and the keyboardist especially had some modern sounds going. I hope it's the same band on the album and that they sound as good.

Incidentally the drummer is the guy who's on the live Portishead record (and some of the studio stuff), he's really excellent.

Jordan, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And isn't his guitarist Porl Thompson (ex of The Cure)?

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 14 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

five years pass...

the new one with Alison Krauss will probably finally get him a Grammy

J0hn D., Sunday, 16 September 2007 14:37 (eighteen years ago)

His voice sounds great!

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Sunday, 16 September 2007 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

Let me put a very kind word for Shaken 'n' Stirred, which has great watery, synthy art-pop.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Sunday, 16 September 2007 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

Well that's wonderful of you to mention it, Alfred. I love love love the single, but as an album it didn't do much for me, I'm afraid.

Bimble, Sunday, 16 September 2007 15:09 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, Raising Sand with Alison Krauss is pretty sweet. Their harmonies do it for me.

Capitaine Jay Vee, Sunday, 16 September 2007 17:00 (eighteen years ago)

I reviewed the Rhino box last year and was pretty pleasantly surprised. I'm definitely gonna check out this new thing with Krauss, even though she doesn't do anything for me.

Is there a thread for the NEW new Robert Plant album somewhere, Band of Joy? Seems to be our man's covers album, which I guess isn't too offbeat, but what surprised me is there seems to be two COUNTEM TWO covers of Low songs ("Monkey" and "Silver Rider") in addition to the countrified/rootsy stuff you'd expect from an album produced by Buddy Miller.

Any thoughts?

Sean Carruthers, Saturday, 18 September 2010 23:28 (fifteen years ago)

he's been doing a lot of covers the past few albums. he's also been reliably fuckin awesome this whole century, dreamland (the one that inspired this thread) turned out to be amazing imo. I have grabbed the new one from emusic but haven't listened yet

aerosmith: live at gunpoint (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Saturday, 18 September 2010 23:33 (fifteen years ago)

I like it, but it seems a bit samey in tempo and feel and thus drags more than it should. I'm finding it works better in a mix with other stuff than on its own. After a few listens I wouldn't rate it as high as Dreamland or Mighty Rearranger or Raising Sand, but those were all very, very good. Those all got better given time and I expect this will as well.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 19 September 2010 00:11 (fifteen years ago)

i already mentioned that i didn't see a point to his low covers; now i actually think they're bad. but the rest of band of joy is good.

i don't know anything about Low, but I really disagree w/the above. I liked both of these tunes on the album, and thought they fit into the album pretty seamlessly. Now knowing they're Low covers makes me curious about the originals, which seems like a good result of a cover to me!

Dominique, Tuesday, 19 October 2010 17:10 (fifteen years ago)

I had the same reaction to the Low covers for the same reason. "Silver Rider" is probably my favorite track on the album.

I would have loved to have heard more of Patty Griffin, but I can see why he'd want to avoid making this Plant/Krauss #2.

Brad C., Tuesday, 19 October 2010 18:17 (fifteen years ago)

well, that is a good result, and maybe your having heard the plant cover first will make you prefer it to the original (i.e., ymmv). but, to me, the plant covers are so inferior to those originals that it's stunning (and again, i like robert plant, and i like his new album).

new one sounds pretty cool

Stormy Davis, Saturday, 8 January 2011 11:58 (fourteen years ago)

actually -- I haven't even really digested 'Band of Joy' yet

but i totally dig his Los Lobos cover

love the fact that the Los Lobos thing was a video in Chicago's 'little village' neighborhood -- that was great intel and execution.

I am going to see the man exactly two weeks from tonight.

not sure why he is skipping Chi town on his tour, but no big deal -- I'll jump the easy Amtrak to Ann Arbor and check him w/ my bro in AA

Stormy Davis, Saturday, 8 January 2011 12:02 (fourteen years ago)

I don't know why but it hasn't clicked for me yet and I've tried a bunch of times...weird because it's using the blueprint from the Alison Krauss record, which is gorgeous. Maybe a production thing? Just doesn't sound as warm.

I'm sure the show will be great.

Hadrian VIII, Saturday, 8 January 2011 13:46 (fourteen years ago)

Favorite track on the new one is "Harm's Swift Way," which apparently was the last song (lyrics) Townes Van Zandt ever wrote. I love Patty Griffin's vocals all over this album, but she's especially good there.

The album itself is a bit of a let down after the Alison Krauss record.

no one talks about the new one here?

it's pretty good.

nostormo, Friday, 5 September 2014 23:51 (eleven years ago)

I'll probably get it.

Out next week.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 6 September 2014 00:03 (eleven years ago)

Kind of amazing how well his range has held up. Noticed in that clip from a few years back of neo-Zep playing "Levee" with Neil Young that he actually sings the song in a *higher* key than he did on the record.

Anyway, the new album is nice. Sounds like a solid Sinead O'Connor album.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 9 September 2014 14:24 (eleven years ago)

Produced it himself too.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 9 September 2014 14:45 (eleven years ago)

Heard him interviewed on NPR. Read elsewhere that one song is about his recent breakup with Austin singer Patti Griffin.

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 9 September 2014 15:48 (eleven years ago)

Was down the HMV when they stopped played that awful Banks album and stuck on Plant's (better sonics), I much prefer it to the Holy Joy rekkid

Liking the new one a lot too.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 1 October 2014 02:08 (eleven years ago)

I love it.

yeah it's great. made me go back and revisit a few I'd missed, which were pretty good too. who needs zeppelin?

Story going around now that Plant literally ripped up a $800 milion LZ reunion contract.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 10 November 2014 14:37 (eleven years ago)

who knew that Plant would end up being such a total don??

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 10 November 2014 14:40 (eleven years ago)

It's been denied by his publicist.

New song is awesome sounds like something off of Raisig Sand

dance cum rituals (Moka), Saturday, 19 August 2017 20:05 (eight years ago)

Xpost - even if the ripping up the contract is a fake story, it is pretty incredible in this day and age the money he's left on the table.

I wouldn't doubt a full LZ world tour he could get close to that upfront

This new song sounds like some mystic folk rock, quite interesting...

hearing a lot of Indian influence in there too, kinda Zep III vibes

Dominique, Monday, 16 October 2017 20:34 (eight years ago)

I've been listening to it on Spotify over the last couple of days. I really like this album. I think the title track is the best song. There are definite Middle Eastern influences on "Carry Fire", including an electric oud, I think? Where were you hearing Indian influences?

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Monday, 16 October 2017 20:39 (eight years ago)

maybe not Indian? but the rhythm of the track alex linked, that &-of-2 and 4 beat I thought I had heard in Indian music

Dominique, Monday, 16 October 2017 20:53 (eight years ago)

Plant has been on one hell of a roll the last decade. I love this record.
