I lived in Recife for a couple of years in the late 90s and she was heavily involved in the music scene there. I met Karina a couple of times, because my then-girlfriend knew some of Comadre Florzinha (there seems to be a fluid approach to the spelling of the band's name), and KB seemed really serious and immersed in Afro-Brazilian culture, taking part in a number of music and dance projects.

...ah they have a wiki page in English: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comadre_Florzinha

Not very impressed with her first solo record. I'll give a second listen.

Are you Brazilian, Daniel?

Shin Oliva Suzuki, Wednesday, 18 August 2010 13:29 (fifteen years ago)

Nah, I'm English, but I spent some time over there between 1995 and 1998. I love cultura pernambucana, and maracatu in particular. What about you, Shin?

Yes. I'm from São Paulo. Anyway, I guess you were very priviliged to live in Recife in that period. Manguebeat at its peak...

Yeah it was a fun time to be there, apart from Chico Science's death ...although that in itself was an interesting experience, indicative of the impact of the movement.
