The Music Maker label just arrived on eMusic. The label's mission is to "help() the pioneers and forgotten heroes of Southern music to gain recognition and meet their day-to-day needs." The criteria for Music Maker recipients is

  • that their original music be rooted in Southern musical traditions,
  • they be 55 years or older, and
  • that they have an annual income less than $18,000
Not only is it a worthy and admirable project, but the discs sound fantastic. I'm thinking particularly of Adolphus Bell; Cora Mae Bryant; and John Dee Holeman; among others.

If anyone else has heard of the label or its artists, I'd greatly appreciate hearing your opinions. I know there are others here who enjoy this type of old-time blues music, and for them, at least, I think this label is well-worth a listen.

I think Little Freddy King and Jerry Mccain are the only 2 I've heard (and I like them).

Cool John Ferguson puts on a great show of guitar pyro.

Saw Carl Rutherford too, before he died. His record is good, if a bit of an anomaly in the catalog.

these discs are really hitting-home with me ATM. for instance, the song just enough (to keep me hanging on) from this disc. is this "electric blues"? i've never been much of a fan of electric blues -- i've much preferred older, acoustic blues -- so i'm kind of surprised i like it so much.
