As far as I'm concerned, this band is

1. Nels Cline
2. Glenn Kotche
3-6. A bunch of people getting in the way of 1. and 2.

never listened to wilco but I like the last name "Kotche" because of the various ways I can imagine it being pronounced in my head to that guy gets my vote

John Stirratt = secret laser-guided weapon. But correct answer is Nels Cline.

a mix of music (Lionel Ritchie) and kicks (my tongue) (Phil D.), Friday, 20 August 2010 01:51 (fifteen years ago)

made all their best records, with the exception of the live record, before Nels even joined the band

two months pass...

literally the only song I like by this band is "Spiders (Kidsmoke)"

maher shalal hash tagz (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 9 December 2010 17:47 (fifteen years ago)

^^^ I've reached that point.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 9 December 2010 17:48 (fifteen years ago)

these guys are smart and have such good taste. I keep waiting for them to fall off the fucking deep end and do a "They Were Wrong So We Drowned" so I could actually sit through one of their albums

maher shalal hash tagz (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 9 December 2010 17:52 (fifteen years ago)

first album is still great imo

EIEIoOoOO (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 9 December 2010 17:59 (fifteen years ago)

still think the jay bennett years are the peak of this band. though i think the only album that i've really not come around on is the last one.

tylerw, Thursday, 9 December 2010 18:03 (fifteen years ago)

actually i haven't listened to being there in a long time but i bet that would hold up well for me...yankee hotel hasn't aged well imo

EIEIoOoOO (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 9 December 2010 18:25 (fifteen years ago)

A ghost is born, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Summerteeth, and Kicking Television (the live record) are all pretty classic; A.M. is really good; Being There has some great songs on it, but it's a sprawling mess; Wilco (the album) is alright but pretty much forgettable; and Sky Blue Sky is a snoozer with a couple of good songs ("Impossible Germany" and "On and On and On" come to mind). There's some interesting stuff in the demos from the Yankee Hotel Foxtrot sessions too that's floating around.

markers, Thursday, 9 December 2010 19:02 (fifteen years ago)

There's a possibility that they'll make a really experimental record -- yes, they have the skill and the people with the inclination -- but Tweedy's the leader of the band, and he's been pushing everything in the wrong direction since A ghost is born, so unless he has a change of heart, which might happen (I thought I read somewhere that they might go a little more weird on the next record), we're going to keep getting pretty tepid stuff, which is a shame.

markers, Thursday, 9 December 2010 19:04 (fifteen years ago)

i don't have anything really to back this up, but i kinda got the impression that tweedy had become *less* dictatorial in his leadership in the past few years.
anyhoo, i agree for the most part with this:
ghost is born, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Summerteeth, and Kicking Television
though i might add their contributions to the mermaid ave. thing as pretty classic. tons of great stuff.

tylerw, Thursday, 9 December 2010 19:07 (fifteen years ago)

as long as nels cline keeps putting out fifteen albums a year i'm good really.

sonderangerbot, Thursday, 9 December 2010 19:09 (fifteen years ago)

Totally forgot about the Mermaid Avenue records, but yes, I would take a handful of those songs ("Remember the Mountain Bed," "California Stars," "One by One," and "Secret of the Sea") and put them with A.M. on the "really good" list.

markers, Thursday, 9 December 2010 19:10 (fifteen years ago)

There's also some interesting stuff on the first Loose Fur record and "Wanted" and "Wreckroom" on the second record, which is I haven't thought about in a long time and now want to listen to today. Oh man!

markers, Thursday, 9 December 2010 19:12 (fifteen years ago)

this band bores me to tears. I think of all the albums I've tried to get into of theirs, there has been like one song from each that actually sticks with me. and I think in all three cases it was the opening track (I Must Be High, that one that bites the Peter Laughner lyrics, and whatever the first song on YHF is)

"Information by surprise" is even legal in Sweden (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 9 December 2010 19:14 (fifteen years ago)

If you've never heard the second Loose Fur record, you need to listen to this:

the mavis staples record is good? haven't heard it yet. was thinking about getting it for my mom, haha.

tylerw, Thursday, 9 December 2010 19:17 (fifteen years ago)

Love the Loose Fur stuff, yeah. I think Being There is my favorite. Definitely a sprawling mess, but such an engaging and, at times, lovable sprawling mess.

I haven't heard the whole thing, just a couple tracks. I just love Mavis.
