Elbow have a lot of making-up to do after they pretty much sold out wholesale last time around - their first 3 albums are good

acoleuthic, Saturday, 21 August 2010 03:46 (fifteen years ago)

disagree strongly; last album redeemed two poor followups to a great debut.

akm, Saturday, 21 August 2010 06:50 (fifteen years ago)

It's not about that, it's about Glam Rock!

I don't get accusations of selling out wholesale last time. Well, I get it as applying to "One Day Like This", but not the album as a whole.

if, Saturday, 21 August 2010 12:28 (fifteen years ago)

The album's attitude was a highly diluted, MOR take on what had come before - a few gems made it through (Grounds For Divorce, The Loneliness Of A Tower Crane Driver, Some Riot) but the album lacked sophistication, musical subtlety or invention elsewhere - and the melodies were more boring than usual

acoleuthic, Saturday, 21 August 2010 12:54 (fifteen years ago)

that's what I think of the second album (or third, whichever one has 'switching off' on it)

akm, Saturday, 21 August 2010 14:11 (fifteen years ago)

But Switching Off is Garvey's most fragile, beautiful melody ever!

I agree with this. I got really bored of the last album very quickly, especially hearing One Day at a Time on everything. I always thought song was just a rewrite of Grace Under Pressure but without the swearing. It sounded like such a hollow and cynical attempt at having a bit hit song.

Leaders of the Free World is the only album that's great all the way through, it's such a shame that The Seldom Seen Kid was so much more of a success. The first two albums are really good but I think Leaders is a bit more consistent.

I've seen them live a few times but haven't seen them since around the time Leaders came out and it always but always bugged me they never play Powder Blue and Asleep in the Back, easily their two best singles. I can imagine them touring the next album and pretty much ignoring the first three albums completely.

Kitchen Person, Saturday, 21 August 2010 15:00 (fifteen years ago)

Oh yeah and Switching Off is beautiful, easily the best song on A Cast of Thousands.

Kitchen Person, Saturday, 21 August 2010 15:00 (fifteen years ago)

it is a good song but it sounds ready made for a gwynyth paltrow love scene in a rom com.

akm, Saturday, 21 August 2010 15:40 (fifteen years ago)

yuk girls

'ray Clamence (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 21 August 2010 15:42 (fifteen years ago)

I've seen them play Powder Blue a few times, thought admittedly the most recent was on the Leaders of the Free World tour. I think Guy struggles to sing it maybe? (cf playback session for Leaders of the Free World where someone asked what he does to combat the damage smoking does to his voice and he replied 'I write songs in a lower register now'!) Similarly annoyed by lack of Asleep in the Back in their sets though! Hope that your prediction will be wrong, can't imagine them playing a set without Newborn.

I love Switching Off, Fugitive Motel, An Imagined Affair, Great Expectations etc. but don't really see how the move from those to Starlings and Mirrorball is such a big deal. Not that I agree with it, but the position that they 'sold out' after Asleep in the Back makes a lot more sense to me, I think of the change from that album to Cast of Thousands as being easily the biggest.

if, Saturday, 21 August 2010 15:50 (fifteen years ago)

except Cast Of Thousands opens up with what might be their best song* and remains pretty darn good from then on - and LOTFW is littered with skewed-but-bright-shining pop moments and even a couple of heavy grooves

*it's between Ribcage, My Very Best, Forget Myself, Bitten By The Tailfly, Little Beast and yes Newborn obviously - also partial to Presuming Ed, Leaders Of The Free World and Crawling With Idiot

that's too many and can be narrowed down

Ribcage, My Very Best, Forget Myself, Bitten By The Tailfly, Little Beast and yes Newborn obviously - also partial to Presuming Ed, Leaders Of The Free World and Crawling With Idiot

yeah it's impressive but the other songs reach me more insidiously

Can someone maybe update the thread title, please? Thanks!

Is it just me or is this exactly the same song as Fallen Angel, Forget Myself and Grounds For Divorce except this time they forgot to write a decent tune. I'm guessing they'll be saving the big anthemic ballad for the next single.

Kitchen Person, Saturday, 19 February 2011 15:39 (fourteen years ago)

Is it just me or is this just the obese white Lighthouse Family. Fat, wheezing, moribund and shit. Oh yeah and The People's Poet.

Morcheeba, simply happening. (PaulTMA), Saturday, 19 February 2011 16:23 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, it's mainly you, imho.

StanM, Saturday, 19 February 2011 16:35 (fourteen years ago)

single doesn't do much for me, but I'm guessing it's already been pointed out that Garvey looks more like Ray Winstone with each passing record?

Simon H., Saturday, 19 February 2011 19:14 (fourteen years ago)

Will check this out when it comes out. I loved their debut and Cast of Thousands record, haven't listened to Leaders of the Free World yet, and was lukewarm over their last one. I have no expectations.

musicfanatic, Monday, 21 February 2011 00:26 (fourteen years ago)

Leaked. Us Elbow fans are going to love it as usual, haters are going to say dad rock again.

StanM, Thursday, 3 March 2011 21:22 (fourteen years ago)

The single edit really does Neat Little Rows no favours at all, thought it was a bit of a non-event until I heard the whole thing with the noisy bit in the middle and the melody crashing back in afterwards. Can see the strong resemblence to Fallen Angel but not the other two first singles.

Saw their warm up show last night and the new stuff all sounded very strong. Open Arms sounded like it will be massive, but in a more enjoyable and less pandering way than One Day Like This. It was the first time I've ever seen them not play Newborn (nothing from the first two albums at all) which was a bit of a shame.

if, Thursday, 3 March 2011 23:59 (fourteen years ago)

this is a really beautiful album!

think i'm going to love this.

World Series champion San Francisco Giants (Bee OK), Friday, 4 March 2011 03:11 (fourteen years ago)

i like it. maybe more than the last one.

akm, Friday, 4 March 2011 21:33 (fourteen years ago)

actually, I think this is probably their best album since the debut.

akm, Saturday, 5 March 2011 02:40 (fourteen years ago)

Very surprised at how minimal and moody/groovy this is, for the mist part.

lol sickmouthy (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 7 March 2011 18:46 (fourteen years ago)

Jesus Is A Rochdale Girl = one of the better songs of the year so far.

"Lippy Kids" to me is everything I love about Elbow. they seem to have these songs that just grab me and run the gamut of emotions.
