inspired by having had 'rippin kittin' (or whatever it's called) on repeat play the other night. also the light 3000 (maybe - i don't really find it sad though), probably some pet shop boys (none springs to mind) - that kind of thing.

the last song on the first My Favorite album.

cybotrons 'el salvador' has the weepingest vocoder ever.

v/vm's cover of total eclipse of the heart? i think its a pretty brutual song myself. the original was gut wretching enough, but with v/vm's eletronic twist, its ten times as bad. the vocal lines are def. some of the scariest things i've heard in a song for quite some time.

Brock K., Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hm, Brock, where might this cover be found?

Ned Raggett, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Soft Cell's "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye."

"stupid boy" by grom is sad in a "i'm putting on my boots now and smashing things up cause i can't stand it" kind of way. there's some odd electro version of a john lennon song that i find very sad as well tho the details are lost to my memory so i suppose it's a bit useless to mention.

unless you know what it is, hint hint

Tracer Hand, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

gary numan's "complex".

jjreece, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's a great one, but Numan has tons, really. "Please Push No More," "Cry the Clock Said," "I Dream of Wires"...

Ned Raggett, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Alice Cooper-Clones (We're All).

Arthur, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not quite electro, and not really sad, but worth a mention nonetheless is Die Warzau's lovely "All Good Girls."

bnw, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, that is a good song -- when it came out in 1995 or so, I thought it was the best late eighties Depeche revival tune in a long while.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Speaking of the mid-90s, what about the Pulsars? "Das Lifeboat", "Technology", "Lucky Day"

Arthur, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

console - 14 zero zero. computer love indeed.

stirmonster, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'The Light 3000' is a pretty obvious one..

the whole of Radioactivity by Kraftwerk feels kind of sad to me.

Wyndham Earl, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree w/ Stirmonster!!

four months pass...
Stevie B's - "Spring Love"(yaya freestyle whatever)comes to mind. kudos on Cybotron - "el salvador" that is a rather weepy tune.

Are OMD electro? Surely they are the kings of sad electro. Stanlow, The Messerschmitt Twins, Sealand, Architecture & Morality, Maid Of Orleans, All of Dazzleships. Terribly terribly melancholic.

harveyw (harveyw), Sunday, 12 January 2003 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Noel's "Silent Morning."

Douglas (Douglas), Sunday, 12 January 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

VNV Nation - Standing (Motion)

Yazoo - Nobody's Diary.

For the times we've had, I don't want to be a page in your diary
babe.

Macattack (Macattack), Sunday, 12 January 2003 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

mentions Dubstar and Mono, waits for reaction, gets none, slinks away quietly.

Charlie (Charlie), Sunday, 12 January 2003 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Charlie -- You thought you could slink away unnoticed, but I'm with you on Dubstar in particular.

(However, while I think I understand "sad", I'm a little unclear on what "electro" means. Half of the bands in this thread, I'd consider to be "synthpop"; but Mono? Console? Is "electro" some sort of umbrella that encompasses synthpop, trip hop, IDM and heaven knows what else?

So I'm deeply unsure if it's electro, but I've always found Alphaville's "Forever Young" to be quite sad.)
