Juvenile - Classic or Dud

The man behind 400 Degrees, and "Ha"...also Juve the Great, throwing in an occasional sing-songy delivery...hot Cash Money beats. What's not to like?

michangelo wuz a party d00d (San Te), Saturday, 21 August 2010 13:50 (fifteen years ago)

Do you like his latest album? I missed it. I love his voice, "Ha," "Back That Azz Up," and "Rodeo," which was everywhere in New Orleans after Katrina. "Get Ya Hustle On" was at least an attempt to grapple with events, but kind of showed the limits of that worldview IMO.

Pete Scholtes, Saturday, 21 August 2010 19:26 (fifteen years ago)

haven't heard it. i'm finding the albums I'm missing cheaply on amazon tho

hen fap pizza (San Te), Saturday, 21 August 2010 19:28 (fifteen years ago)

NOT FUNNY NEEDS MORE GUCCI (deej), Saturday, 21 August 2010 20:08 (fifteen years ago)

CLASSIC

a hoy hoy, Saturday, 21 August 2010 20:31 (fifteen years ago)

reality check is also hella underrated but it came out at a similar-ish time to carter ii so that was always going to happen.

a hoy hoy, Saturday, 21 August 2010 20:33 (fifteen years ago)

reality check is half GREAT but half garbage iirc

NOT FUNNY NEEDS MORE GUCCI (deej), Saturday, 21 August 2010 21:24 (fifteen years ago)

'i know you know' was a slept on slow jam

NOT FUNNY NEEDS MORE GUCCI (deej), Saturday, 21 August 2010 21:26 (fifteen years ago)

yeah Reality Check is one of those records that has some great songs but also some long stretches that are pretty much worthless. love "Holla Back" and "Sets Go Up," though.

don't even know what's going on w/ Juvenile that he apparently released an album last month like 7 months after the one before that? weird.

richie goingham (some dude), Sunday, 22 August 2010 00:36 (fifteen years ago)

Welcome 2 the Nolia=wonderful blend of synths plus Juvenile's tough guy lyrics and sing-songy delivery.....hot track even now

funky brewster (San Te), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 15:39 (fifteen years ago)

can't ever tell if I liked his younger, higher pitched voice, or the gruffer one....

funky brewster (San Te), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 19:41 (fifteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

I might actually like Juve the Great more than 400 Degreez. the lyrics are just more earcatching to me.

Bo Jackson Cruise Control (San Te), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 22:41 (fifteen years ago)

its def more underrated. less of a big rap impact but its probably the record i listen to more often

g code has some jams too dont miss that

*sets trend* (deej), Saturday, 11 September 2010 19:24 (fifteen years ago)

got that one recently. really like it.

*sets trend* (deej), Saturday, 11 September 2010 19:27 (fifteen years ago)

G Code has its slower points but overall its a pretty amazing album with a ton of range. Take Them 5 in particular can be so heartbreaking ("You think I'm lying?...") and while a lot rappers would leave it at that juve never dwells on it or pities himself and instead gets into the complexity of the situation and of the emotions that go with it ("my breath funky with a migraine headache/a bit pissed off cus i know i made a mistake")

then I Got That Fire is of the top of my head probably the third best banger in his catalogue after solja rags and back that azz up

I'm not sure the spelling is crucial

Bo Jackson Cruise Control (San Te), Sunday, 12 September 2010 05:28 (fifteen years ago)

i usually see it spelt whodi

just sayin, Sunday, 12 September 2010 08:45 (fifteen years ago)

just sayin, Sunday, 12 September 2010 08:56 (fifteen years ago)

its a pronunciation spelling of 'wardie' so no it doesnt really matter

I also really really really like Reality Check. Cocky and Confident is fairly enjoyable but lyrically it's a huge step down from Reality Check (there are three consecutive songs with 'shit' metaphors). it's entertaining but the other thing that bugs me about it is that Juvenile does a lot of rapping in his upper register which sounds....weird.

door to door legume salesman (San Te), Wednesday, 9 February 2011 04:44 (fourteen years ago)

no mention of "soulja rags" ? wtf such good album

btw guys on Cocky and Confident one of the last tracks on the album is Juvenile dedicating a song to his son, which is an interpolation of Roxette's "Listen to Your Heart"....

Touring the 25th anniversary of 400 Degreez with a live band and Mannie Fresh! Tickets are something like $80 including fees though...

JoeStork, Monday, 9 September 2024 04:38 (one year ago)

I saw Juvenile in Covington, Louisiana many moons ago and it was easily one of the better rap shows I've seen in my life but I still haven't pulled the trigger on the current tour for that very reason, seems like the Tiny Desk popularity got baked into the pricing this go-around.
