Static Caravan

i mean, when you think about it, theres a lot of these small 7 labels around that seemed to start around 96/7, but the focus has shifted away from those postrock/electronic/pop things (70s nostalgia) to a more twee robots/programming/synth thing, and i'm not sure how these labels have made the transition

the isan 7" (parochi) is ok. magnetophones temporary lid has its moments, but theres like 50 releases on Static Caravan, which ones are good?

Lots of 'em are good. The Static Caravan releases are only a few quid a pop - buy all of them! (Especially the forthcoming release by The Video Age, 'cos I'm in them)

(how about a "tiny indie labels: Search and Destroy"?)

The guy who wrote the Fischerspooner review on Pitchfork has a pretty good 7-inch on Static Caravan called "Mod Killer." Also love the Lithops 7-inch "Tubino." The whole idea of electronic music 7-inches I find really cool, actually. You never get tired of the tracks because it takes some work to listen to them.

Yay! another label I own everything on!

Ace singles: Manual, Plastik, Ampop, Cathode, ISAN, Sybarite, Sonna, Tele:funken, FortDax, Grace Period.. it's all rather good indeed.

On the downside, I don't have much time for Papa November, and I thought the Magnetophone 12" was the worst thing they've done.

SOZ but why bother? ... how far does "vaguely charming for about a second" get you? I don't want to come across as muscular flex vitality guy but this music is gutless sexless joyless "nice" twee and just a waste of precious time imo. i refuse to accept that anyone has any serious attachment to these records, or that there was any motive in releasing them other than "uh, dum-de-dum". it's way beyond nihilism. anywhay whatever if you like that sort of thing.

"You never get tired of the tracks because it takes some work to listen to them" yeah, ok. any slight bland electronic involvement with the merry melodie = automatically superobscurant right? Cos of um, robots and stuff yeah? BZZZZT ooh!!!

Bob Zemko, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I would completely argue that these records are gutless or joyless. Sexless they might kinda be but if I wanted "sexy" records I'd listen to Peaches instead, and I'd really rather not. Unlike Warp, labels like this are having fun with what they're doing and caring a lot less about the "dancefloor", for which I'm tremendously thankful.

It's a fairly incorrect assumption that all the music SC puts out is of the click buzz glitch variety, which is very far from the truth.

electric sound of jim, Monday, 12 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

well obv I don't claim to have heard all 50 million 7"s that have come out on SC but i feel that the few i have listened to have shown me enough of the label's general mindset to turn me off, sonic variety or no. in other words i doubt any instrument combo is gonna stray far from the twee bleh. am i wrong? (it was more to do with the "takes so long to get into the music" statement which I assumed fascistically was to do with some mindless idea about electronix. if anything SC totally sucks the fun out of new technology imo)

"sexless" maybe a bit of a stretch, but i know you know i didn't mean music directly about sex, or even the dancefloor. it's not an attack on home listening or anything. but sub sex for any sort of desire, impetus, need! what have you. that's what i fail to see. in consumer more so than artist.

"Unlike Warp, labels like this are having fun with what they're doing and caring a lot less about the "dancefloor"" um warp is founded on the basis of headphone music detached from dance, if not completely ignoring the influence of the outside world like SC. and without turning this into a warpy thread there's far more crossgenre whimsy fun in warp's last releases than many a current label wallowing in their niche. LIKE SC!!!!! hahaharr. but then since warp are famous and prob rich the tables turn and what you call "fun" turns into majorlabel money grubbing desperation... yay thank goodness for the small label. until they get big too.

sorry for the confrontational tone earlier! I'm not that het up i assure you. although pimmon's SC release is the only one of his that i've been disappointed with.

"I would completely argue that these records are gutless or joyless"

doesn't this mean you agree? ;)

Bob Zemko, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Argue against that is.

I agree that Pimmon's SC 7" isn't his best. The real SC treats are the lesser known ones. The Plastik and FortDax singles in particular really blew me away.

four years pass...
does anyone else like shady bard? seems there's quite a bit of excitement growing around their forthcoming album on the 'van.. the two records so far have been good not great..

other fab recent SC records of note: zombi 12", garden cd (fantastic!).. most of the now sold out stuff has been tops although the disc by jefre cantu ledesma (of tarentel) was actually kinda crap

130-odd releases ain't bad at all for a label of this size

jimbo (electricsound), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 12:45 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah. I lost interest in the whole indietronica seven inch thing but there were some real gems. I'll have to dig out some favorites in an S/D type fashion for here.

Tunng were rubbish though.

Caring less about the dancefloor than Warp. Does not compute.

jimn (jimnaseum), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 12:53 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah all those big funky house floor fillers by Autechre or Maximo Park.

Treblekicker (treblekicker), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 12:55 (nineteen years ago)

the first tunng album is really good, the second one didn't excite me terribly much though.

maximo park ain't funky but you should see how they fill indie disco floors (not something to necessarily be proud of)
