hmm. tough.

guess i tend to gravitate more towards his conciser pop flashes then the proggier moments, with some exceptions

every night i die at miyagi's (insanely catchy result of him fishing around in the astral for great lost pop hooks)
alisa (see above, but transplanted into more of dance-ish idiom)
good kids make bad grownups (i dunno how you even come up with something so rambling and great like this)
strange fires (see above, great from the first spectral synth bloops)
fright night (KNOCK KNOCK ON THE DOOR THREE TIMES!)
are you gonna look after my boys? (i wish he would do more songs like this. great video, too. )
loverboy ("I love you like a doggone snake")
artifact ("don't you get up, this song is forever". like the king of comedy, but replace jerry lewis with peter buck)
gettin' high in the morning (totally annoying but at the same time totally brilliant)
almost waiting (when the song finally kicks in, shooooooo)

dell (del), Monday, 23 August 2010 20:44 (fifteen years ago)

"every night i die at miyagi's " - great cathcy song indeed, though it takes awhile to discover the greatness cause of the lo- as low can get-fi of the sound.

the spoken bridge part can be a little off-putting, too!

anyhow, it's interesting that there is not a great deal of overlap in what people have listed. something for everyone

'The Doldrums' is still head and shoulders above everything else for me, just a stunning ambient record, stunning pop record, moving, mesmeric. Masterpiece.

I dunno, I heard The Doldrums first and adored Good Kids Make Bad Grownups but didn't like the rest of it at all.
Worn Copy knocked me out and select singles and album tracks after that, but I think Before Today is my favorite lp right now.

"The List (My Favourite Song)"

did you mean The List (YOUR favourite song) ot The List (My Favourite Song)?

Zeno, Tuesday, 24 August 2010 05:44 (fifteen years ago)

hard to say which album is his best:

all of them are equally good, and all of them have some weak songs i always skip.
worn copy, for example, has the best songs in it imo, but the larger amount of fillers too. so i don't know.

so he is the perfect artist for a mixtape (and therefore - this thread!)

Zeno, Tuesday, 24 August 2010 05:48 (fifteen years ago)

i wanna swap out getting high in the morning for the people i'm not. thank you, carry on

no fear, Tuesday, 24 August 2010 06:24 (fifteen years ago)

did you mean The List (YOUR favourite song) ot The List (My Favourite Song)?

The latter - I had no idea a 'Your Favourite Song' existed! There's a load of his stuff I've never heard though.

Gavin in Leeds, Tuesday, 24 August 2010 17:13 (fifteen years ago)

you know what song really got me the second time i saw him? OCEANS OF WEEP. great song.

Funny he came here to Denver and apparently wen't on a quasi hipster tirade when he scoped one pretty obvious guy in the obvious and mubmled "What, you don't have enough self esteem to clap?" or so. Just read this, didn't actually see it... lots of words saying he was somewhat a jerk.

Hell yes, this is awesome. To hell with people that don't clap at shows.

Dude will have a killer 'Best Of' in a year or two. While looking into this I was kinda surprised at how many songs I preferred off the newer ones rather than older ones.

Trepanated Earth - his underrated epic

nostormo, Wednesday, 8 May 2013 18:24 (twelve years ago)

he could have had a killer "best of" in 2002

wk, Wednesday, 8 May 2013 18:59 (twelve years ago)

he should get rid of his band and go back to make records the way he used to - alone.

nostormo, Wednesday, 8 May 2013 21:35 (twelve years ago)

he said he will do this when rolling with a band will stop being sustainable so it is bound to happen eventually, when he will be old / "less hot".

his bass playing is so nuts... just thinking of the opening of "Among Dreams"... I remember watching a video of him & his band playing that song live, Tim Koh starts but he gets it slightly off time, or the band comes in late, & Ariel just like waves his arms around like a pissed conductor & they attempt to start the song like 3 times. there's that interview where Koh says that Ariel's bass lines are deceptively complex & really hard to play...
