Have been playing this at every spare moment for the past few days and I'm still not entirely sure if it's meant to be a straight soundtrack album or not.

James Mitchell, Monday, 23 August 2010 20:39 (fifteen years ago)

I can't decide if I want to see the film or not.

Watching Gonzales live can be great fun, but I don't know if making a film based around chess is going a bit too far.

jellybean (back again) (Jill), Monday, 23 August 2010 21:12 (fifteen years ago)

internets say that there is a cinema screening of this on Thursday ten minutes walk from where I'm staying but the theatre website and linked ticket sites say nothing?! :-/

Gonzo has not played live in Australia for almost eight years :-/ :-/

(he told the promoter that the one I saw was the best gig he'd ever played...)

Teddybears.SHTML (sic), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 00:46 (fifteen years ago)

I'm expecting the film to be one part Rocky, one part Fame, one part Eight Mile.

James Mitchell, Tuesday, 24 August 2010 09:06 (fifteen years ago)

Glad I decided to go to see this. It's exactly what you'd expect if you extended Gonzales' in between song banter into a film, full I'd puns and stuff. I wished there was more music in it though.

it was also a but strange watching Gonzo, Tiga and Peaches in a love triangle.

jellybean (back again) (Jill), Friday, 27 August 2010 00:25 (fifteen years ago)

OMG people still care about gonzales, tiga and peaches?!?!?!

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 27 August 2010 01:12 (fifteen years ago)

xp How late did it end up finishing? I was put off by the fact I had to be up this morning at 5AM but ended up only getting about three hours' sleep anyway. Should have gone.

James Mitchell, Friday, 27 August 2010 09:00 (fifteen years ago)

it finished around 1am. there was a short q&a after the film.

it was a bit silly having the film so late, but i guess only a small audience is interested in this kind of thing anyway.

jellybean (back again) (Jill), Friday, 27 August 2010 09:32 (fifteen years ago)

I wished there was more music in it though.

Yes! The credits listed what must be the whole album, but the only prominent bits were a great piece with Gonzo in the car in from the airport at the beginning, Never Stop during the chess championship, and the same minute of I Am Europe, twice. Not that the story itself really needed it, as it's not about music, but all that bouncy, propulsive piano made the film come alive in a different way whenever it dropped. I was perking up and bouncing in my seat every time.

Tiga was fantastic in this, incidentally.

<3 Tiga <3 <3 <3

this film was such a delight!

czyczyczyczy comparative (c sharp major), Friday, 27 August 2010 12:38 (fifteen years ago)

in terms of acting skills maybe gonzales' mum > tiga> gonzales > peaches.

didn't realise there were so many of us there last night...

jellybean (back again) (Jill), Friday, 27 August 2010 13:46 (fifteen years ago)

"I just made things even more confusing by re-adding the 'Chilly' to my name," he says, ever the smartass, though no less charming for it. "Is it Gonzales or 'Chilly' Gonzales? Beautiful chaos..."

two weeks pass...

"Have you ever hated someone? I have."

Gonzo talks about, and then plays a hilariously dinky Casio version of, The Grudge, one of the vocal tracks on the new album.

The vocals in the verses on Crying sound really badly produced?

what the hell is with this voiceover shit

Totally can't wait for this tonight.

James Mitchell, Thursday, 5 May 2011 09:06 (fourteen years ago)

I love this guy's piano playing and he's good at mixing but all that self-referential rapping/voiceover stuff is absolutely obnoxious. I really find it impossible to listen to.

everything, Thursday, 5 May 2011 18:33 (fourteen years ago)

I was sort of disappointed tonight. Didn't come out from it with such as high as previous shows, maybe because I wasn't drinking, or having seen his a number of times in the last few years his show has lost the element of surprise.

jellybean (back again) (Jill), Thursday, 5 May 2011 22:40 (fourteen years ago)

SBd you for having had the chance to see him a number of times in the last few years

I have some kind of staph infection, and the only prescription is IALEX (sic), Thursday, 5 May 2011 23:26 (fourteen years ago)

Me too. Never seen him. Does he do a kind of musical journey monologue kinda production?

everything, Thursday, 5 May 2011 23:43 (fourteen years ago)

I have seen him, but he hasn't come to my hemisphere, let alone country, for over eight years*

(back then it was half fake-baby-grand, half rapping over backing tracks, lots and lots of monologue/dialogue with Feist, Feist as backing singer/lead singer/hook chick/perc/Omnichord player, Savvy on gtr for a couple, lots of covers and medleys at the piano.)

*and said at the film screening in London that he wasn't going to

Last night was mostly the Ivory Tower album with a few bits off Solo Piano and The Unspeakable Chilly Gonzales, some covers with the guests and "Take Me To Broadway".

Did he do the 'piano dubstep' bit at the Pigalle shows? Seemed familiar.

I'd like to see that orchestra performing with a real singer instead of that totally embarrassing cunt.

everything, Sunday, 21 August 2011 23:13 (fourteen years ago)

I wish he'd do another solo piano album.

bamcquern, Monday, 22 August 2011 04:11 (fourteen years ago)

think the last track on the new one is for you
