wish I could find at least half of these. Of the ones I've heard, its close between Trouble is a Lonesome Town and Cowboy in Sweden. Have yet to hear an album by this guy that I didn't like tbh

bring me your finest milksteak and a side of jellybeans (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 19:07 (fifteen years ago)

it's not his best album but love and other crimes has some outstanding songs

buzza, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 19:09 (fifteen years ago)

i haven't heard all of these. Trouble, Cowboy, Requiem & 13 are amazing. Poet Fool or Bum is just ok. i think i heard farmshit at one point, but don't remember it. going w/Cowboy

jaxon, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 19:09 (fifteen years ago)

Oh man, I love Poet, Fool or Bum!

http://www.somevelvetmorning.net/Bronnen/Poetpromosheet.jpg

Smart bets are on Cowboy to take it though.

chromecassettes, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 19:20 (fifteen years ago)

cowboy in sweden

Zeno, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 19:22 (fifteen years ago)

i'll listen to Poet again. i've got it on a 2fer cd w/back on the street again which has a weird 70s sound to it, so maybe i confused the two.

jaxon, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 19:33 (fifteen years ago)

I like Back on the Street too (tho' not as much). The version of "Your Thunder and Your Lightning" on it is great.

chromecassettes, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 19:38 (fifteen years ago)

Poet...2nd

Zeno, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 20:10 (fifteen years ago)

I like Back on the Street too (tho' not as much). The version of "Your Thunder and Your Lightning" on it is great.

Have you heard the version on "For Every Solution There's A Problem?" It doesn't have the manic bass line of the other version, but the guitar on this one is straight out of Link Wray.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 20:12 (fifteen years ago)

This is the thread where I confess that I own every single one of these albums (in one form or another)

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 20:15 (fifteen years ago)

Voted for Cowboy In Sweden, but 13 would be a close second.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 20:16 (fifteen years ago)

The version of "Your Thunder and Your Lightning" on it is great.

absolutely love this. can't remember rest of LP

jaxon, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 20:31 (fifteen years ago)

Cowboy in Sweden, but The Very Special World Of Lee Hazlewood to Love and Other Crimes is a great run.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 20:48 (fifteen years ago)

13 is the last album I've heard. Is any after worthwhile?

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 20:49 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, was just about to ask, which of the late 70s records are the best?

tylerw, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 20:50 (fifteen years ago)

d/ling 13 now

Standing on the corner with a raggedi-old suitcase by my side
Waiting for a Greyhound bus to come along so I can hook a ride
Gonna go as far as 14 dollars will take a fool like me
Gotta find a place where I can hide, you know I must forget Marie
Marie

I'm standing on the corner feeling raindrops raise tears down my face
Try and losers tears and knowing that I never should have run the race
Never should have let her built a house of love, it's falling in on me
Gotta find a place where I can hide, you know I must forget Marie
Marie

oscar, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 21:09 (fifteen years ago)

shakey, you'll love 13. it's his funk/soul record. horns and heavy drums

jaxon, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 21:15 (fifteen years ago)

13 is the last album I've heard. Is any after worthwhile?

Poet, Fool or Bum. A House Safe for Tigers
I think A House Safe For Tigers is his last great record. I like some of Back On The Streets, but not all. The rest are patchy, saved only because they are Hazlewood records.

Have you heard the version on "For Every Solution There's A Problem?" It doesn't have the manic bass line of the other version, but the guitar on this one is straight out of Link Wray.

Yeah, that's the other version. Equally great, in it's own way.

"Easy and me and some other guy" kills me every time I hear/think/say it.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 21:18 (fifteen years ago)

I haven't heard all of his albums, but would be very surprised if there would be better than 'Cowboy In Sweden'.

zeus, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 21:28 (fifteen years ago)

lol this album is rigoddamndiculous

bring me your finest milksteak and a side of jellybeans (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 22:04 (fifteen years ago)

Cowboy in Sweden squeaks past Requiem for me. 13 is horrible, IMO, especially the dud butchering of "I Move Around."

Doctor Madame Frances Experimento LLC (SNM), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 23:19 (fifteen years ago)

I don't like the arrangements on "13", songs are good. My favourite albums are "Cowboy in Sweden" and "Love and Other Crimes", but then they have some of the same songs on them - "Cowboy" is a sort of compilation after all? All of the albums I've heard have good bordering on great things on them, tho some of the early albums are a bit sketchy and demo-like.

"Back On The Street Again" has "Rider On A White Horse", which is awesome... and "Your Thunder And Your Lightning", "Dolly And Hawkeye" and the title track are almost as good

It dreamed to Tom D. of the Caucasus (Tom D.), Thursday, 26 August 2010 09:45 (fifteen years ago)

can't really fathom a hazlewood fan bein down on thirteen, great songs on that one

... but not very good arrangements

"Cowboy" is a sort of compilation after all?

all albums are compilations of a sort, really. These versions are re-recordings. Hazlewood re-did many of his songs on different albums. 13 is a good example of this.

chromecassettes, Thursday, 26 August 2010 11:22 (fifteen years ago)

In the beginning there was nothing
but it was kind of fun watching nothing grow

You came walkin' into my life
Carryin' your own dreams
You could've been
Yeah, you could've been good
Then why were you so goddamn mean
But till you I never had any fun But I'm sure glad I never
Ain't you glad I never
Be glad I never owned a gun

They aren't re-recordings though, they're exactly the same. Also, was "For a Day Like Today" actually a Suzi-Jane Hokom single?

"Cowboy In Sweden" was the soundtrack to a film, I'm pretty sure he used old recordings alongside newer material

I think it was some kind of Rhino Handmade type deal originally. I have it, and it's pretty great. (Also $15 cheaper on amazon UK.) Voting for Trouble, though.

He's such a good speaker too - I love the storytelling moments on Trouble... almost as much as the songs. I could listen tohours of that stuff.

textbook blows on the head (dowd), Thursday, 26 August 2010 11:36 (fifteen years ago)

Checking track listings, there's actually only one song from "Love and Other Crimes" (I thought there was more) on "Cowboy In Sweden", and two from "Forty"

i saw him once, and the rambling introductions were as entrancing and musical as the songs. interrupting a story about a house safe for tigers with, -man i made some great movies, or dedicating one of the slow ones to the journalists - and their mothers - if they have mothers

the rhino 3 cd seal "Strung Out on Something New" has 3 of his mid to late sixties albums in their entirety plus various singles and production work he did for others
well worth getting if you can find it. One track, Guitar On My Mind - DUANE & MIRIAM EDDY, is very much a proto-Some Velvet Morning.

buzza, Thursday, 26 August 2010 16:01 (fifteen years ago)

er, "deal"

buzza, Thursday, 26 August 2010 16:02 (fifteen years ago)

researching a bit I see there are a couple compilations also titled Love & Other Crimes compilation out there. This is the actual, original LP's tracklist (the original, the one I have and the one that appears on Strung Out On Something New) :

Love and Other Crimes
Morning Dew
She Comes Running
Rosacoke Street
She's Funny That Way
The House Song
Wait and See
Forget Marie
Pour Man
Love and Other Crimes (Reprise)

Not bad, though I don't rate Trouble as high as that. It's good, but there are better (Lee Hazlewoodism, Something Special, The Very Special World, and A House Safe For Tigers to name four.

I voted for Love & Other Crimes.

Love that Poet, Fool or Bum ad. I was looking through some late 60s/early 70s Rolling Stones recently and there are so many ads in that vein - large type, portentous message, a degree of assumed insider knowledge. It's a style of advertising that's completely outdated, never to return.

Missed this poll but would have voted Requiem. Love the spoken word interludes. I interviewed him in 2002 and it was such a buzz to hear him use pretty much exactly the same tone of voice. He also made quite a dent in a bottle of whisky and a packet of Marlboro Reds.

Regarding the poll I would have gone for Love and Other Crimes, it has an embarrassment of riches and most mere mortals would struggle to have such an abundance of great songs on a best of collection rather than an album. Every Time I listen to That Old Freight Train it reduces me to tears, its a fucking beautiful song.
