someone left a Beatles greatest hits cd and a Black Sabbath greatest hits cd on wall at a heavily populated college bus stop

Message Bookmarked

you look both ways and and see a lot of college kids standing around. you stand among them near the greatest hits cds perched on top of a 4-foot brick wall along the busy sidewalk. you wait a couple minutes for the bus. meanwhile no one has come to reclaim the cds

what do you do?

if you don't take the cds someone else probably will - they are right there in the open. maybe someone else would appreciate the music more than you? maybe the original owner will come back for them?

you see the annoying university street preacher talking his mouth off near the bus stop. maybe the cd quandary is some moral test to see whether you greedily take them all, honestly take none of them or oddly take the one you rather have: the evil Black Sabbath versus the righteous Beatles. too many questions run through your head (you blame that stupid street preacher for having subconsciously made you question things). your bus arrives and you have to think fast. surely someone will take the cds if you don't

as an astute judge of human nature i am convinced that once you pick them up to determine if they are scratched, they are functionally already living in your house by the time you see that they are not

gg eileen (jjjusten), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 23:42 (fifteen years ago)

when i was trying to sell/move/get rid of all my belongings before my move from chicago to hawaii, i came down to the 11th hour with my CD collection (maybe 400-500?)

most of them were too beat up to bother trying to re-sell, and i wasn't really into half of them anymore anyway. i was way more focused on moving vinyl to my new place, as most of the CDs i cared about i had on a hard drive already.

what i ended up doing: holding on to about 2 dozen that had sentimental value and/or badass/collectors item packaging, then taking the rest and putting them (jewel cases and all) into a pair of huge trash bags. then i drove in the rain at 2am to the front stoop of my former college dorm, where i ran out of the car, dropped both bags, and drove away.

gr8080, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 23:43 (fifteen years ago)

today i wouldn't take either.

gr8080, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 23:45 (fifteen years ago)

I leave stuff like this around all the time. I want you to take them.

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 23:45 (fifteen years ago)

Take none of them and download some Nirvana. Apparently, they're like Black Sabbath meets The Beatles. Kill two birds etc.

but the question is did you graduate with a bachelor's degree *in being honest*

iatee, Thursday, 26 August 2010 00:44 (fifteen years ago)

Greatest hits CDs. With no cases. Yeah, I'm pretty sure in the year 2010 that counts as trash. Do you go through these same moral quandaries when you see yesterdays discarded newspaper lying on the ground?

wk, Thursday, 26 August 2010 00:53 (fifteen years ago)

xp

Sort of yes

My last college exam I took a couple days later then the rest of the kids. I'm a statistics major so I took it at the end of a table in a fancy conference room in the statistics building. I had my bookbag with all my notes sitting next to me and the professor only checked on me occasionally. This was the most worried I ever was about passing a class and I thought about peaking at the notes in my bookbag because I had gone through every question and I thought I didn't think I was going to get the grade I needed to pass the class. Ultimately I decided not to look in my bookbag even if I had to wait all summer and take this class, my last class neeeded, again 3 seasons later when it was offered again. Right after I decided not to cheat my professor popped his head in the door

I got a B in the class and I was worried about a D. I have no freaking clue how I possibly got that good of a grade. I attribute some of it to honesty

you doesn't hasta call me johnson (CaptainLorax), Thursday, 26 August 2010 00:59 (fifteen years ago)

wk, my moral quandry was that sabbath is evil and the beatles are good, i felt as if my decision actually makes a difference in the grand scheme of things as if I was choosing between good and evil. or both. why I thought that way at that time is a mystery

you doesn't hasta call me johnson (CaptainLorax), Thursday, 26 August 2010 01:04 (fifteen years ago)

Take none of them. Don't care about Black Sabbath, and the only Beatles track I really love is "Eleanor Rigby", but the greatest hits cd probably has that awful stereo version with the vocals on one speaker only. If it has the mono version, I might consider taking it.

and I'll never have the time or inclination to remember to do it in preference to new and/or interesting things that I'd rather hear again
oh noe.

Greatest Hits were once a rather nice way to check out an act you were curious about.

These days, of course, we have Spotify and filesharing clients for that though.
