donuts vs. entroducing

pretty obvious poll. released almost exactly a decade apart, two albums that represent, to me and probably some other people, the apex of instrumental hip hop. also arguably both artists' creative peak and definitive statement but whatever.

donuts for me. such an immersive aesthetic, plus the whole thing just bumps. some people don't like the way jd bumps but i like it

pretty sure a lot of people like it these days

my friend's girlfriend says it makes her naueseous, like being driven around by a sixteen year old (awkward breaking & accelerating like). it does have a lurching quality

but yeah

Endtroducing by a long shot.

jaymc, Thursday, 26 August 2010 20:49 (fifteen years ago)

Love Dilla beats but Endtroducing works better as "instrumental hip-hop" worthy of undivided attention in itself.

Ground Zero Mostel (Hurting 2), Thursday, 26 August 2010 20:51 (fifteen years ago)

That's a good distinction. Does Donuts have some awesome beats? Sure! Do I ever want to sit down and listen to Donuts as an album? Not really.

jaymc, Thursday, 26 August 2010 20:55 (fifteen years ago)

jaymc i recommend u listening to donuts while: biking, walking, doing things. much less of a sit-down and be absorbed type of album

to be rill rill (samosa gibreel), Thursday, 26 August 2010 21:00 (fifteen years ago)

Donuts is a great album! The songs are short but the mood stays the same. Much prefer it to Shadow's thrashy big beats

The Bartered Bride (Ówen P.), Thursday, 26 August 2010 21:04 (fifteen years ago)

Eh, I've tried w/Donuts. The only thing I love is "Workinonit."

So hard... Listened to Donuts just the other day, so maybe that.

Gavin in Leeds, Thursday, 26 August 2010 21:17 (fifteen years ago)

Why did that cover of Donuts end up the one everyone uses? I much prefer the one I have

don't think those dudes like dilla or stones throw &c in general

lex you should listen to entroducing again it's aged pretty well. alongside some of the more corny epic trance moments there is loads of timeless unfuckwithable bangin hip hop
