NOT FUNNY NEEDS MORE GUCCI (deej), Saturday, 28 August 2010 09:53 (fifteen years ago)

then probably 'feelin it' actually

NOT FUNNY NEEDS MORE GUCCI (deej), Saturday, 28 August 2010 09:54 (fifteen years ago)

Definitely "Politics as Usual"!

Tim F, Saturday, 28 August 2010 10:57 (fifteen years ago)

Definitely cosign yr list in general Deej, though I would include "Dead Presidents II".

"Dead Presidents" or "Politics as Usual"

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 28 August 2010 12:35 (fifteen years ago)

some amazing beats obviously but for me this has always been kind of a record where it's just kind of good wallpaper that lets me focus on the lyrics, way more than most other Jay albums, so it's hard to call. back in the 90s my answer would've been "Can I Live" but now...maybe "Coming Of Age"? I love that piano loop and all the subtle textures layered together.

steenage dream (some dude), Saturday, 28 August 2010 13:41 (fifteen years ago)

oh man this is hard....I voted for "Feelin' It" but was thinking of "Can't Knock the Hustle" and "Dead Presidents II".

funky brewster (San Te), Saturday, 28 August 2010 13:43 (fifteen years ago)

Gotta go with "Can I Live"

'ello govna, Saturday, 28 August 2010 15:42 (fifteen years ago)

"22 twos" being underrated here, love them pizzicato strings

agree with shipz

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Saturday, 28 August 2010 15:53 (fifteen years ago)

I actually love what the Roots did with cant knock the hustle more (!) than the original -- that groove they hit in the middle verse where hes all "OUTTA STATE DROPPIN TOP GAME / SCREAMIN OUT THE SUN ROOF MONEY AINT A THANG" is doooope

agree w/ al about the beats' role in this record being way diff than the rest of the catalog

NOT FUNNY NEEDS MORE GUCCI (deej), Saturday, 28 August 2010 16:59 (fifteen years ago)

argh misquote -- "switchin four lanes / screamin out the sunroof..."

NOT FUNNY NEEDS MORE GUCCI (deej), Saturday, 28 August 2010 17:00 (fifteen years ago)

that middle section groove the Roots play is the beat from the Irv Gotti remix iirc

some dude, Saturday, 28 August 2010 17:03 (fifteen years ago)

it is -- weird that i didnt realize that-- altho its got this 'doot doot doodoo' keyboard part that isnt on the gotti remix that really gets u

ITS YA BOY (zorn_bond.mp3), Thursday, 2 September 2010 00:37 (fifteen years ago)

wasn't it a direct lift of a beat from an EPMD song?

funky brewster (San Te), Thursday, 2 September 2010 00:41 (fifteen years ago)

well that's not so much a question, it is the exact same beat, but I'm not sure where EPMD liftedi t from (if they indeed did)

funky brewster (San Te), Thursday, 2 September 2010 00:41 (fifteen years ago)

funky brewster (San Te), Thursday, 2 September 2010 00:42 (fifteen years ago)

7 mins of funk by the whole darn family

'its your thing' was sorta the definitive flip of that sample. nyg'z did a cool version w/ premier where he chopped the bassline a bunch

I really thought the trendy picks in this thread woulda been Can't Knock the Hustle, for its smooth-R&Bness (I played it for a bunch of non-rap listening friends during a building session and everyone started dancing to it), or Dead Presidents II. surprised these two won, but that's mostly due to lack of votage I think.

funky brewster (San Te), Thursday, 2 September 2010 00:49 (fifteen years ago)
