I tried it once singing the Philip Bailey part. I blew out my voice, while my bro blew out the windows with his shouting.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 29 August 2010 14:37 (fifteen years ago)

I went on a trip to San Francisco with my dad when I was 14, spring of 9th grade. He was interviewing for a job that he didn't end up getting. We stayed in a hotel near the entrance to Chinatown, a place designed mostly for Japanese tourists. The windows opened. I was listening to a lot of top-40 radio that summer ("Obsession" et al), and "One More Night" was in the top 10 then, and I heard it all the time. Anyway, one night when I was on my own, I would sit on the windowsill, listen to "One More Night," and watch streetwalkers trying to engage Japanese businessmen in conversation on the street below.

"Easy Lover": love the meta-meta-meta video. And my theme song.

billstevejim, Sunday, 29 August 2010 15:00 (fifteen years ago)

I remember once reading an interview where Phil Collins described the creation of the song and he was talking about how it started out real smooth, but that he directed his band to stomp on the fuzz box and make it more "rock"...like he made it this raw animal.

I mean the song is still a shimmering piece of pop, the distorted guitar makes it no more rockin' than Toto's Hold the Line.

Doesn't mean it's not a great song tho.

funky brewster (San Te), Sunday, 29 August 2010 15:01 (fifteen years ago)

oh one other thing about Philip -- I saw Earth Wind and Fire a few months ago and dude's voice STILL sounds incredible. He can still hit all of his insanely high notes (in fact he showed off a lot). not bad for a dude that's been in the band for almost exactly 40 years.

Meanwhile, Phil Collins has been lowering the keys of his songs during live performances since THE 90'S!!!

funky brewster (San Te), Sunday, 29 August 2010 15:05 (fifteen years ago)

We played this song in high school jazz band.
And a medley of songs from the Top Gun soundtrack in marching bad.
And "Take My Breath Away" in chorus.
And I like "Easy Lover" but in retrospect, that was a tough year for a band geek.

3 EVERYBODY WANTS TO RULE THE WORLD – Tears For Fears Not a party anthem.
6 ST. ELMO’S FIRE (Man In Motion) – John Parr Good for a laugh.
8 I WANT TO KNOW WHAT LOVE IS – Foreigner Mom liked it.
12 DON’T YOU (Forget About Me) – Simple Minds The worst song ever!

Elsewhere : bad Stevie Wonder, bad Duran Duran. Imagine being stuck at your summer job listening to this shit.

WE BUILT THIS CITY – Starship Time for more pain meds.

I more or less hate Phil Collins for turning an amazing band (Genesis) into yet another version of his solo act.

I loved the Gabriel era, and the first few Collins LPs had some good quirky pop like the Abacab or Duke albums but fuck INvisible Touch yo.

Like, in another universe, the video for that song is the finished product of what we, in this universe, see as the behind-the-scenes making-of video.

I'm glad I stumbled upon this thread and rediscovered this AMAZING AMAZING song. Like with Stevie Wonder, when Phil Collins stopped playing drums, his records turned to shit.

I could see Bailey easily pulling this off solo; but Collins, not so much.

Collins-era Genesis >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Gabriel-era Genesis. I'll take calculated chart-pop over labored, knotty prog (and I like lots of solo Gabriel). But we've been through this.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 29 August 2010 18:12 (fifteen years ago)

Collins' mid eighties production resume:

Adam Ant - Stripped
Frida - Something Going On
Eric Collins - Behind the Sun
Eric Collins - August
Philip Bailey - Chinese Wall
Howard Jones - "No One is To Blame"

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 29 August 2010 18:13 (fifteen years ago)

so RONG RONG RONG.

Selling England by the Pound, Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Foxtrot, and Nursery Cryme all dispense loads of anal goop all over Collins-era Genesis, especially the latter half.

funky brewster (San Te), Sunday, 29 August 2010 18:15 (fifteen years ago)

funky brewster (San Te), Sunday, 29 August 2010 18:16 (fifteen years ago)

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 29 August 2010 18:17 (fifteen years ago)

i'm not much of a "prog"/Genesis/Gabriel fan, but "watcher of the skies" and "get 'em out by Friday" blow away any Collins-era Genesis i've heard.
i always liked "Easy Lover", even though i can't stand Phil C; but it sounds even better now than i'd remembered

....some kind of psychedelic wallflower (outdoor_miner), Sunday, 29 August 2010 18:18 (fifteen years ago)

This may sound bizarre, but Collins was really good at overstatement (e.g. Genesis' "Home By The Sea" and "Domino). I wrote this long thing recently in which I tried to salvage No Jacket Required's very good to excellent album tracks.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 29 August 2010 18:21 (fifteen years ago)

Phil sounds good on the song,, I just find it amusing that it was a showpiece for PHILIP BAILEY'S Chinese Wall album and yet Collins got all the recognition for the song.

He performed it regularly on his tours too, although the last recording I heard of him doing the song live was awful, as he lowered the key, and the 'rock' elements were downplayed. he also had his backup band doing the Philip Bailey vocals (including former EWF bassist Nathan East), and it was good technically but IT WASN'T BAILEY.

funky brewster (San Te), Sunday, 29 August 2010 18:22 (fifteen years ago)

"easy lover" is high school era for me, and i always liked it despite having seriously mixed feelings about phil collins in general. (really have never been able to stand "sussudio," e.g.)

and i like gabriel better than collins, but i like early-collins-era genesis better than either gabriel-era genesis or later genesis. "abacab" is a good tune, and i was always a sucker for "follow you follow me."

....some kind of psychedelic wallflower (outdoor_miner), Sunday, 29 August 2010 18:32 (fifteen years ago)

I don't doubt his ubiquity on radio and MTV/VH-1 caused too many stomachs to turn (I hope Collins rewarded his agents handsomely, btw), but, really, there were far worse mainstream stars. The guy was a more than adequate singer, an excellent drummer, an underrated keyboard programmer, and knew his way around his hook (his ballads are far less soppy than the rest of the charts proffered). It's been almost twenty years since his last Top Fifteen hit. Time to cut him some slack.

I feel like I heard "You'll Be In My Heart" all the time but OTOH both my parents rocked the adult contempo station on the regular. It was a perfectly acceptable little song, marred only by its association with a purple, Rosie O'Donnel-voiced ape.
