most of the best guys on this list haven't made a great record in the last 25 years so it's hard to call

either gadd or porcaro from this list imo

You guys must really love his work between 1985 & 1992!

in re: Porcaro yeah I guess if you're being super "note the #s" about it then yeah but I'm guessing most people just look at the names and vote and don't really give too much of a shit about the "of the last 25 years part." Oh no, he played the "Lido Shuffle" beat more than 25 years ago what'm I gonna do? ans., possibly vote Porcaro anyway because he played the "Lido Shuffle" beat, duh

honestly though any list like this that doesn't have pete sandoval on it is a total joke imo, I dig that these cats aren't into that kind of music but c'mon

gross rainbow of haerosmith (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Monday, 30 August 2010 00:06 (fifteen years ago)

Oh people can vote for what they like, i just didn't realise that a guy in the list had been dead for the majority of the last 25 years.
xp

as someone who has never played an instrument, I couldn't possibly vote for someone based on technical ability, I just wanted a discussion by those who can. Though im guessing loads will just vote due to favourite songs/albums by these guys.

Thomas Lang has played on some of the most important records in the history of mankind.

_▂▅▇█▓▒░◕‿‿◕░▒▓█▇▅▂_ (Steve Shasta), Monday, 30 August 2010 00:10 (fifteen years ago)

Lang began working professionally – working his way through the European Pop, Rock and Jazz scenes. In addition to his work as a session musician playing with John Wetton (UK, King Crimson), Robert Fripp, Glenn Hughes, Robbie Williams, Kelly Clarkson, Sugababes, Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton, Victoria Beckham, Ronan Keating, Steve Hackett, Boyzone, Falco, Nina Hagen, Steve Jones and Mick Jones

and also B*Witched - Jump Up, Jump Down (Live) according to wiki

what a weird list. i'm gonna vote brann dailor just cuz he's the best drummer i've seen this year. if you're comparing all of those guys' careers, i guess gadd, copeland, and porcaro are my personal faves. i like the light-touch guys more than the gut-pounders.

a tenth level which features a single castle (tipsy mothra), Monday, 30 August 2010 01:16 (fifteen years ago)

it's not weird for a musician mag type list tho, it's a different universe.

my list would be a lot different tho, drum mags seem to prize session dude type chops above all else

i got what t.rex turok the mic right (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 30 August 2010 01:17 (fifteen years ago)

is travis barker actually better than tre cool? cuz i'd give the pop-punk slot on a list like this to tre, but i admit i've never paid attention to blink-182 drumming.

a tenth level which features a single castle (tipsy mothra), Monday, 30 August 2010 01:25 (fifteen years ago)

I've heard a lot of people going on about how travis barker is an awesome drummer but not tre cool.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 30 August 2010 01:27 (fifteen years ago)

well tre's just tight as hell, he doesn't do anything very inventive. and i've just never paid attention to barker.

a tenth level which features a single castle (tipsy mothra), Monday, 30 August 2010 01:33 (fifteen years ago)

i can only go on others opinions. I couldn't tell you how good a musician is technically. But I can say "oh i like the drumming on that"

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 30 August 2010 01:50 (fifteen years ago)

Like when i listen to the who or mastodon, its the drumming that really stands out for me.

My totem animal is a hamburger. (WmC), Monday, 30 August 2010 01:55 (fifteen years ago)

as far as the last 25 years go, i dunno, i like the helmet/battles guy. there are lots of good metal drummers obviously. i don't know how many i love though. i think i'm going to see rangda next week. all my pals will be there. my brother is playing with them next week too! that will be a good show.

scott seward, Monday, 30 August 2010 02:01 (fifteen years ago)

i think barker's been playing a lot of hiphop and other crossover stuff, probably makes him look like the better musician

xp i would vote corsano over all of these too

I like John Stanier too.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 30 August 2010 02:04 (fifteen years ago)

A masked metal messiah. Ever since blast beating his way into the drum world back in 1999 as Slipknot unleashed their stunning debut, Joey has cemented himself as the master of metal playing. Lightning fast-yet-supremely-technical, Joey has proven himself equally adept outside of the confines of Slipknot, having worked with Korn, Rob Zombie, Murderdolls and more, as well as stepping in to save the day at the last minute when depping for Lars Ulrich at Download 2004.

Like Travis Barker, Joey has branched out beyond drumming, enjoying success as a producer and even appearing in a handful of movies. However, for us, he’ll always be a drum legend first and foremost, and it looks like you agree with us as he was the runaway winner of our Greatest Drummer of the Last 25 Years poll, taking an amazing 37 percent of the votes. That means that the Slipknot man earned more than 38,000 votes in just seven days on his way to being crowned as the finest drummer of the last quarter of a century.

Here is what Jordison had to say about it- http://www.musicradar.com/rhythm/joey-jordison-winning-rhythm-poll-bigger-than-a-grammy-271219

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 30 August 2010 03:24 (fifteen years ago)

I guess putting an indie fuxor on the list like say Greg Saunier, John McEntire or Zach Hill would be too much to ask, but I think maybe Jimmy Chamberlin and Chris Adler, and I think if I thought about it a little I could come up with others who belong on that list more than some of those people.

Ground Zero Mostel (Hurting 2), Monday, 30 August 2010 03:35 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i think ?uestlove's got a great distinct sound most of all. still he's a high profile drummer and it's really weird he's not on the list

sonderangerbot, Monday, 30 August 2010 14:33 (fifteen years ago)

Dale from the Melvins and Danny from Tool are missing. And that fellow from Bloc Party. And Vinnie from Neurosis/Unsane/Swans. And loads of other people.

StanM, Monday, 30 August 2010 14:34 (fifteen years ago)

There's really very little on the list that's representative of the second half of the last 25 years.

i got what t.rex turok the mic right (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 30 August 2010 15:14 (fifteen years ago)

ha, holdsworth is the guy lukather reps for in a big interview I read recently

I mean the thing is, I think a lot of music heads will vote for a player on the basis of what he brings to the group we like that he plays in - how big a part of their sound is he, what does he add to this music we love? whereas chops dudes are like, very focused on parts. I don't care much about Paul Simon but that 50 Ways beat is insane. INSANE. I have worked with a couple of session dudes and once you do that, once you see how fluidly they adapt to a sound, how their craft isn't "I do what I do in this one place and it really does something cool" but rather "I find the place where my skills are useful and then use them to elevate the whole deal" -- it leaves a big impression. I can imagine how people who have a lot of experience with session cats would end up thinking "I don't care about how good a guy is in his band, the question is, can he [i]play[/i,]" which is a very intense & unpackable term for these dudes.

Dan I., Monday, 30 August 2010 18:02 (fifteen years ago)

This list is totally retarded, esp. given the timespan. So, 1985-2010? No reason Porcaro should be here, really, or Cozy, or hell Stewart or Gadd or a few more, none of whom (save Porcaro and Powell) are any less good than they were before but all of whom were at their best pre-'85. Dude from Tool should be here, Lombardo should be here. In terms of session guys, the dude holding the seat in Steely Dan right now is, not surprisingly, redonk:

Neil S, Monday, 30 August 2010 18:56 (fifteen years ago)

Given the number of folks ?uestlove has backed on Fallon, it blows my mind how there can be any doubt as to the dude's prowess and diverse talents. Perhaps because he's a good enough drummer to know the role of bandleader is more important than the role of, er, rolls?

Anyway, the dude that was playing with Prince earlier this century, John Blackwell, is sickly talented:
