most of the best guys on this list haven't made a great record in the last 25 years so it's hard to call

as someone who has never played an instrument, I couldn't possibly vote for someone based on technical ability, I just wanted a discussion by those who can. Though im guessing loads will just vote due to favourite songs/albums by these guys.

That right there is what we call the bigotry of low expectations. ?uestlove is more important than the beatles, buddy rich, beethoven, bach and mozart combined.

?uestlove is a good drummer but honestly i don't think he could take most of this list, drumswise

what a weird list. i'm gonna vote brann dailor just cuz he's the best drummer i've seen this year. if you're comparing all of those guys' careers, i guess gadd, copeland, and porcaro are my personal faves. i like the light-touch guys more than the gut-pounders.

it's not weird for a musician mag type list tho, it's a different universe.

my list would be a lot different tho, drum mags seem to prize session dude type chops above all else

is travis barker actually better than tre cool? cuz i'd give the pop-punk slot on a list like this to tre, but i admit i've never paid attention to blink-182 drumming.

I've heard a lot of people going on about how travis barker is an awesome drummer but not tre cool.

well tre's just tight as hell, he doesn't do anything very inventive. and i've just never paid attention to barker.

i can only go on others opinions. I couldn't tell you how good a musician is technically. But I can say "oh i like the drumming on that"

Like when i listen to the who or mastodon, its the drumming that really stands out for me.

human drummers should not exist when programmable rhythm machines have existed for over 30 years.

From this list, it has to be Bozzio. (Just happened to be listening to Zoot Allures when I first saw this thread.) I wish Joey Baron had been on here, though.

as far as the last 25 years go, i dunno, i like the helmet/battles guy. there are lots of good metal drummers obviously. i don't know how many i love though. i think i'm going to see rangda next week. all my pals will be there. my brother is playing with them next week too! that will be a good show.

i think barker's been playing a lot of hiphop and other crossover stuff, probably makes him look like the better musician

I guess putting an indie fuxor on the list like say Greg Saunier, John McEntire or Zach Hill would be too much to ask, but I think maybe Jimmy Chamberlin and Chris Adler, and I think if I thought about it a little I could come up with others who belong on that list more than some of those people.

yeah i think ?uestlove's got a great distinct sound most of all. still he's a high profile drummer and it's really weird he's not on the list

There's really very little on the list that's representative of the second half of the last 25 years.

I mean the thing is, I think a lot of music heads will vote for a player on the basis of what he brings to the group we like that he plays in - how big a part of their sound is he, what does he add to this music we love? whereas chops dudes are like, very focused on parts. I don't care much about Paul Simon but that 50 Ways beat is insane. INSANE. I have worked with a couple of session dudes and once you do that, once you see how fluidly they adapt to a sound, how their craft isn't "I do what I do in this one place and it really does something cool" but rather "I find the place where my skills are useful and then use them to elevate the whole deal" -- it leaves a big impression. I can imagine how people who have a lot of experience with session cats would end up thinking "I don't care about how good a guy is in his band, the question is, can he [i]play[/i,]" which is a very intense & unpackable term for these dudes.

This list is totally retarded, esp. given the timespan. So, 1985-2010? No reason Porcaro should be here, really, or Cozy, or hell Stewart or Gadd or a few more, none of whom (save Porcaro and Powell) are any less good than they were before but all of whom were at their best pre-'85. Todd Trainer from Shellac should have a look in too IMO. Of this list, Dave Grohl or Stephen Morris are my all-too predictable choices.

Given the number of folks ?uestlove has backed on Fallon, it blows my mind how there can be any doubt as to the dude's prowess and diverse talents. Perhaps because he's a good enough drummer to know the role of bandleader is more important than the role of, er, rolls?
