I think this is a potentially interesting question to talk about how rappers actually rap -- im not saying rappers need to neccessarily have a bunch of copycats coming up after them. but more the kind of guys whose own style was so singularly identifiable but also felt like they were a part of the performing zeitgeist at some level. like, maybe they were at first seen as weird/not 'standard' rappers but ended up being accepted as great rappers as it became obvious theyd come up with a really unique style that was resonating
a few rappers that come to mind immediately are like
young dromystikalmac dre
where its obvious that their style of performing influenced how ppl rapped after them by being both highly unique, but populist. (gucci is one of these too obv)

serious question, who raps with an audible Mystikal influence?
― some dude, Monday, 30 August 2010 14:59 (fifteen years ago)
i was gpnna say, but i honestly can't figure out the conceit of this thread. like we need to find people that had an impact but not one that can be quantified by copycats?
― hold me, thrill me, kiss me, lil b (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 30 August 2010 15:02 (fifteen years ago)
explicitly said this wasnt about what ppl directly imitate other rappers, im thinking more of an impact in terms of like ... feeling as if their style felt more significant & radical without feeling like they were losing relevence by doing so -- i tried to explain that in the OP anyway. but obv mystikal was actually hugely influential in obvious ways right after he hit in the late 90s. silkk the shocker changed up his entire style after mystikal dropped!
in my exp. most southern rap fans consider him one of the best rappers ever, also
― NOT FUNNY NEEDS MORE GUCCI (deej), Monday, 30 August 2010 15:04 (fifteen years ago)
Mystikal was definitely huge and gets respect, but i mean, if your one big example of someone who was directly influenced by him is a less famous labelmate, then i dunno man
― some dude, Monday, 30 August 2010 15:09 (fifteen years ago)
State Prop should definitely be in this conversation, for Beanie's same-word semi-rhymes, Young Chris's whisper flow that Jay jacked, all the Philly slang other people started using, etc.
― some dude, Monday, 30 August 2010 15:12 (fifteen years ago)

and how is this not copycatting?

im trying to get ppl to look outside of the most obvious signs of influence, i.e. everyone imitating lil wayne by making their voice creak, into more abstract & less obvious things

deej, your whole "but they SOLD MORE RECORDS" as a dictum on canon-crashing doesn't really work, because it honestly creates some fiction world where Harvey Danger is more influential than Sebadoh
― hold me, thrill me, kiss me, lil b (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 30 August 2010 15:16 (fifteen years ago)
when talking about 'influence' i think u can say that 'popularity' is a RELATED force -- i never said 'popular = influential' but obviously they are going to have a relationship
― NOT FUNNY NEEDS MORE GUCCI (deej), Monday, 30 August 2010 15:22 (fifteen years ago)

Pitbull was pretty influential paving the way for the current ubiquity of top-40 rap at dance music tempos, in 2004 "Culo" and "Toma" laid down a template that was widely heard and kicked off the first popular wave of uptempo rap since hip house. Will.i.am was working a similar vein but his tempos crept up after Pitbull's success and Flo Rida owes him pretty much his entire style (especially the use of triplets).

― NOT FUNNY NEEDS MORE GUCCI (deej), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 06:07 (fifteen years ago)
