Franz Ferdinand winning this in 2004 reads like the last gasp of print magazine critics actually attempting to run the discourse instead of just basing their entire coverage on Larry Fitzmaurice writeups

franz ferdinand, for first introducing the "angular" guitar sound into rock music

i guess determining the WORST would be harder considering what a fucking lolbarrassment "Franz Ferdinand" was from jump vs. the smdh cornball tourist trap of "Empire State Of Mind" luring in midwest weiners

dyao cruz (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 04:46 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, it's probably "get ur freak on", but i love every song here, even the franz ferdinand, even "empire state of mind"

a dystopian society awaits if we continue on this path. (contenderizer), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 04:47 (fourteen years ago)

...

(Ms. Jackson btw)

larry_fitzmaurice, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 05:01 (fourteen years ago)

Agree that Missy is tops here, but I'm voting for "Work It," which won't top "Freak" but deserves at least a few votes.

Fantastic songs, all:

OutKast - Ms. Jackson (2000)
Missy Elliott - Get Ur Freak On (2001)
Missy Elliott - Work It (2002)

So-so:

OutKast - Hey Ya (2003)
Kanye West - Gold Digger (2005)
Gnarls Barkley - Crazy (2006)
M.I.A. - Paper Planes (2008)

Yaaaaawn:

Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out (2004)
Amy Winehouse - Rehab (2007)
Jay-Z - Empire State Of Mind (2009)

lol at "Hey Ya" being a "so so song" to ilxor

dyao cruz (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 05:10 (fourteen years ago)

Why's that?

I mean it's enjoyable, but I wouldn't place it in an Outkast POX.

Maybe a '00s Fun Summer Songs POX?

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 05:11 (fourteen years ago)

I apparently didn't even look at the 2009 P&J results, because I had no idea "Empire State of Mind" won.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 05:19 (fourteen years ago)

Love: "Get Ur Freak On," "Work It," "Hey Ya", "Gold Digger"

Neutral+: "Ms. Jackson," "Paper Planes"
Neutral-: "Empire State of Mind"

Bleah: "Take Me Out," "Crazy," "Rehab"

"Work It" is an easy vote for me.

clemenza, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 05:21 (fourteen years ago)

i like 'freak' 'work it' 'rehab' 'hey ya' 'ms jackson' the most i guess

eff the rest

NOT FUNNY NEEDS MORE GUCCI (deej), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 05:25 (fourteen years ago)

only song here that isn't at least an 8/10 classic jam is esom

bernard goony (The Reverend), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 05:30 (fourteen years ago)

max, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 06:16 (fourteen years ago)

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 1 September 2010 06:34 (fourteen years ago)

i have no idea what's gonna win this year, don't think it's gonna be "fuck you" altho i agree that it's a top 10 lock

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 1 September 2010 06:35 (fourteen years ago)

i'm really gonna pitch hard for critics to vote for actual fucking singles just so it's not like EVERY SINGLE AWESOME SONG ON THIS ALBUM BY "GIRLS" YAY again

dyao cruz (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 07:00 (fourteen years ago)

yeah unless a song blows me the fuck away, i try to keep songs from my albums ballot of my singles list

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 1 September 2010 07:01 (fourteen years ago)

i try to keep myself away from the pazz and jop list

max, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 07:03 (fourteen years ago)

also it might be a bit of a double standard of sorts but if a song is huge on the radio then i feel okay about incl it on my singles ballot along with an album -- putting an xx "single" as #1 & having their album on the list too just strikes me as lazy

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 1 September 2010 07:03 (fourteen years ago)

but not the pazz and jop threads xp

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 1 September 2010 07:03 (fourteen years ago)

what song is huge on radio without being a single anymore?

dyao cruz (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 07:04 (fourteen years ago)

i mean a single

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 1 September 2010 07:09 (fourteen years ago)

amazing songs that i'm fine with winning: get ur freak on, work it, gold digger, rehab
ok songs but smh @ these winning: ms jackson, paper planes
just smh: hey ya
anyone who voted for these needs to take a long, hard look in the mirror and then kill themselves or at least retire from any role in music criticism: take me out, crazy, empire state of mind

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 07:40 (fourteen years ago)

voting "work it", which i always marginally preferred to "get ur freak on" (and which i think has held up better, nearly a decade (gah) on)

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 07:41 (fourteen years ago)

I don't really care about any of these, maybe I'll vote Take Me Out just to annoy Lex and 50% of ILM.

i remember lex & xhuxk complaining abt the tendency in the 2009 poll

zvookster, Sunday, 12 September 2010 21:57 (fourteen years ago)

"Lazy indie voters turning a fun exercise into a dutiful one by listing random "singles" off albums they also voted for are the new version of lazy AOR voters who used to vote for perfunctory tracks off albums they also voted for. Only the genre and technology have changed, and the fact that the AOR squares—back before our newfangled, allegedly singles-oriented, iTunes-through-shitty-speakers era began—almost always got marginalized by radio-imbibing pop and dance and hip-hop fans."

a public service really

J0rdan S., Sunday, 12 September 2010 22:04 (fourteen years ago)

I forget if I voted or not, but the results come pretty close to matching up with my preferences. I would just move 'Empire State of Mind' to the penultimate shot, and shift 'Gold Digger' up to the slot right above 'Take Me Out.' In contrast to the 90s list, I more or less like every one of these songs, and flat out love half of them.

"rehab" is fucking awful, the same joss stone old navy r&b the uk's been peddling for years only that time it had a tmz hook to give a patina of interest. robert palmer had more soul, nevermind gladys knight.

balls, Wednesday, 22 September 2010 01:36 (fourteen years ago)

i mean at least "empire state" had the creme de la creme jock jam tie in, you could maybe admire jay-z's acumen or something. plus it applied hip-hop's theory of enya to alicia keys - to be encouraged.

balls, Wednesday, 22 September 2010 01:41 (fourteen years ago)

what the hell does that last sentence even mean?

flaccid house (The Reverend), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 03:39 (fourteen years ago)

hip-hop theory of enya = this (enya, alicia keys, dido, etc) works well if used sparingly. negative control in this case would be that fullblown "empire" alicia keys came out with.

balls, Wednesday, 22 September 2010 05:55 (fourteen years ago)

that's completely wrong tho, given alicia keys' sizable amount of classic material in her own right. "empire state of mind" is a bad look for her as well as jay-z

and in what world is the position of a soul singer who habitually collaborates with rappers vis-à-vis hip-hop remotely comparable to two singers whose distance from hip-hop is the point of their presence?

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 06:06 (fourteen years ago)
