Scott Walker vs Frank Sinatra (when singing about life's lowest ebb)

I have been listening to Frank's "Only the Lonely" LP and I think he sings about despair and directionlessness with such unadorned, moving simplicity that it completely eclipses the work of Mr. Walker. I don't really want to fall out of love with Scott, though (he had a lot of pain in his life too, eh? eh? didn't he?) so I wondered if anyone could convince me otherwise.

the thing is, Frank's delivery and his songs' lack of lyrical specificity seem to make them universal, all encompassing, whereas Scott's cultural references and nods to whatever high modernist artists are beginning to seem to me like a gawky, melodramatic game. But it took listening to Frank to lead me down this path.

I have actually managed not to hear any Scott Walker, but that Sinatra record is classic. Especially 'Goodbye'.

Scott got a lot from Frank and you have my permission to love both.
