I've seen their name come up here a couple of times (usually courtesy of Alex in NYC), but still don't know much about them. Enlighten me. Is their a Spiritualized connection?

I was sort've hoping for something a bit more objective than their own website.

Joolz Fargo, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Alright, then...take it from me: THEY ROCKED!

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

go to allmusic.com!

brains, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Done that. Allmusic's a great resource, but they tend to be a bit clinical in their descriptions. I was interested in some more anecdotal information.

Joolz Fargo, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I did want to say what the albums more or less sounded like. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Firewater better.

J, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Firewater are fucking brilliant, but they're ultimately an entirely different breed of cat than Cop Shoot Cop.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Cop Shoot Cop were a lot of fun. I never had any of their albums, but my best friend in high school did. Ahh, those were the days...

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I find their tough-and-gritty schtick hard to take now. what are they, 15?

StanM, Friday, 30 October 2009 20:05 (fifteen years ago)

back when I was writing for ugly american, we planned to release a live video compilation of bands we covered

one of the videos we shot was csc live in philly, this was sometime after consumer revolt but before white noise, and they were doing a bunch of songs that either never got released or morphed into other songs

I remember being bummed when white noise came out because those songs weren't on it, one awesome one in particular called "sabbath", I'll have to dl that to see if it's on there

鬼の手 (Edward III), Friday, 30 October 2009 20:07 (fifteen years ago)

Cop Shoot Cop's Jim Coleman releasing solo album

"Trees" is a new project from Cop Shoot Cop member Jim Coleman. His
creative work has transitioned over the years into a unique blend of
cinematic, electro-acoustic music. Trees, Coleman’s debut release in this
genre, creates an intensely personal yet universally transcendent sonic
experience. The album is being released August 7 on the Wax And Wane
label.

Trees features some extremely talented musicians working with Jim.
Kirsten McCord plays cello; she has a release on Thurston Moore’s Ecstatic
Peace label, and has worked with musicians such as Elliott Smith, Vic
Chesnutt and Jarboe. Phil Puleo, drummer of Cop Shoot Cop and Swans, plays
a variety of instruments, from wood flute to a variety of percussion. Phil
was the drummer/percussionist in Cop Shoot Cop, and has since played
extensively with Michael Gira in Swans. Dawn McCarthy adds vocals to two
tracks. Dawn has several releases as Faun Fables on the Drag City label.
Ellen Fullman plays her self -created long stringed instrument on two of
the tracks as well. Ellen’s music has been represented at The Whitney
Museum, Lincoln Center and The Walker Arts Center.

Cop Shoot Cop's JIM COLEMAN Composes Film Score for Beth B film EXPOSED.
World Premiere at Berlin Film Festival - Tonight!

Former Cop Shoot Cop member JIM COLEMAN has composed the lion's share of the music for EXPOSED, a new film by noted underground director Beth B. The film score also includes two new pieces from JG Thirlwell aka Foetus as well as contributions from Cop Shoot Cop, John Spencer Blues Explosion and a wide variety of Burlesque & non Burlesque performances.

The World Premiere of EXPOSED will be at the 2013 Berlin Film Festival this weekend:
http://www.berlinale.de/en/programm/berlinale_programm/datenblatt.php?film_id=20134937

In the film, Beth B takes us into the 21st century underground and reveals a secret world where cutting-edge performers are taking hold of a taboo art form, Burlesque, and driving it to extremes that most people have never seen. It's satire. It's parody. It's a populist blend of art and
entertainment that gives new meaning to the word "transgression." EXPOSED features performances by Rose Wood, Julie Atlas Muz, Mat Fraser, Dirty Martini, Bunny Love, Bambi the Mermaid, World Famous *Bob* & Tigger! These 8 female and male artists use their nakedness to transport us beyond the last sexual and social taboos. Operating on the far edge of Burlesque, these performers combine politics and physical comedy to question the very concept of "normal." Through them, we get to examine our own inhibitions.
Beth B has followed the lead characters with a "fly-on-the-wall" camera over several years,
capturing rehearsals, backstage preparations, private struggles and triumphs, and the
extraordinary performances. The film's unique perspective allows us, the audience, into the clubs
and other hidden spaces where these artists perform. This shocking and comedic art form
thrives in the after-dark hours and cult venues of major metropolitan areas - renowned spots
such as The Box, Coney Island Sideshow, Casa Mezcal, and The Slipper Room, founded by
James Habacker, who also appears in the film.
This performance art is powerful and enlightening because it challenges traditional notions of
body, gender, and sexuality. The body types of the performers range from statuesque to
transgender to disabled. Their personalities are scintillating, yet very real. They may be part of a
unique subculture, but they come from surprisingly diverse economic and social backgrounds. As
they peel away their clothes - describing their journeys and commenting on their performances
- they peel away our own preconceptions and inhibitions. Ancient moral, religious and sexual
shibboleths are seen from new perspectives, and a new generation of the cultural avant-garde
comes to light.

Classically trained in piano and French horn, Jim Coleman exploded onto the indie rock scene in the 1990s with his seminal NYC band, Cop Shoot Cop, playing alongside the likes of Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore, Helmet, and Marilyn Manson. Initially an art student at The University of Hartford, Coleman went on to obtain a BFA in film from S.U.N.Y. Purchase, being the only student in his class working in experimental film. In the 1990s Coleman's talents in music, film and art merged with the inception of Cop Shoot Cop. Joining up with a group of like-minded musical misfits, CSC released four full- length albums and several EP's and Singles on Big Cat and Interscope Records. Coleman also co-directed several of their music videos. Internationally acclaimed, CSC toured during the 90s doing shows with Iggy Pop, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soul Coughing, Jesus Lizard, and Henry Rollins.

By the time Cop Shoot Cop self imploded in 1996, band member Coleman had already begun scoring indie films and television series. He has worked with directors such as Todd Phillips, Hal Hartley, Beth B, and Richard Kern. He has also done a number of series and one-offs for television networks such as PBS, A&E, HBO and TLC. His most recent solo release is Trees which was released this past Summer on the Wax And Wane label.

five years pass...

Not that you rabble necessarily care, but members of Cop Shoot Cop are fleetingly reforming as EX-COP (minus Tod Ashley, who is in Turkey) with Algis Kizys from SWANS on bass, playing at St. Vitus in Brooklyn in April.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 6 March 2018 19:30 (seven years ago)

I care! But I'm not likely to see a gig in Brooklyn. Been wondering what Tod A's up to but it'd be great to hear the rest of the band do their thing.
