Johnny Fever, Friday, 3 September 2010 20:11 (fourteen years ago)

they play "thieves like us" in the movie, i think, though it's not on the soundtrack

horseshoe, Friday, 3 September 2010 20:11 (fourteen years ago)

I can think of unambiguous, unimpeachable reasons to vote for 8 of these songs

feel free to answer my Korn Kuestion (HI DERE), Friday, 3 September 2010 20:11 (fourteen years ago)

ultimusmoron (cozen), Friday, 3 September 2010 20:16 (fourteen years ago)

INXS has some really great songs!

Oh absolutely! I just wouldn't vote for this specific song on this soundtrack (ditto Jesse Johnson)

xp: The XX, Vampire Weekend, La Roux, some American covering "Paper Planes"

x-post

So am I tbh!

I am seriously going to have to think about this for a while.

I spent a month at my grandmother's in Germany when I was 14 and this and Ramones Mania were the only two tapes I brought with me for some reason. I now associate this soundtrack with that time and listening to it on my Walkman while lying in bed and daydreaming about boys even more than I do with the movie in a lot of ways.

o sh!t a ˁ˚ᴥ˚ˀ (ENBB), Friday, 3 September 2010 20:29 (fourteen years ago)

i have always hated the fuck out of the cover of "wouldn't it be good" because the singer just mangles an already established great song (oh nik kershaw u r a traet).

RAWK WHORNES (jjjusten), Friday, 3 September 2010 20:30 (fourteen years ago)

the behringer escape plan (electricsound), Tuesday, 7 September 2010 06:50 (fourteen years ago)

i love lots of these, but for me it's omd by a mile. i have always loved that song, it was one of my teenage ideals of romantic pop. what really puts it over the top is the "ooo-oh-oh ooo-oh-oh" bit at the end, with him half-crying "if you LEAVE" over it. so great.

a tenth level which features a single castle (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 7 September 2010 12:46 (fourteen years ago)

It was something of a surprise when I first spent a decent amount of time in the states, to find that was the only OMD song ever played on the radio. They have other ones! Better ones!

ledge, Tuesday, 7 September 2010 13:50 (fourteen years ago)

Bunnymen or OMD or Suzanne Vega with Psychedelic Furs in fourth. I think.

pissky in the jar (onimo), Tuesday, 7 September 2010 13:55 (fourteen years ago)

If it was the album version of "Pretty in Pink" I'd vote the Furs without thinking but in this case hmm I dunno Bummymen maybe.

Hongro Horace (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 7 September 2010 14:13 (fourteen years ago)

Me too. Going with Suzanne Vega now, though. (The cut that surprised me most when I played the album a month or two ago.)

Never knew Joe Jackson had a credit on "Left of Center". Is he on the record?

Hongro Horace (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 7 September 2010 15:02 (fourteen years ago)

Credit on album actually says "Suzanne Vega Featuring Joe Jackson On Piano."

xhuxk, Tuesday, 7 September 2010 15:04 (fourteen years ago)

Wikipedia sez he actually recorded a Sly Stone collab, a mid-size hit.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 7 September 2010 15:06 (fourteen years ago)

Jesse, that is, not Joe (not to say a Jackson-S. Stewart collab wouldn't have been, er, interesting).

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 7 September 2010 15:06 (fourteen years ago)

xp Yeah, "Crazay," which was on the album I bought. Mediocre, despite the big name. (It's not like Sly was making great records in the '80s, either.)

xhuxk, Tuesday, 7 September 2010 15:10 (fourteen years ago)

Xgau called it "a classic fake-Prince single" (despite giving the album a C+ and calling Sly "barely funcitonal"), though, so don't take my word as gospel. Sounded far from classic to me, though.
