Superpitcher - Kilimanjaro

There's probably a bit of chat about this across various threads but it deserves its own space I feel.

Out today. Really psyched to hear it.

There's some talk on the one and only Superpitcher thread but an album with a 6 year gestation time deserves its own place on ILM.
It's in the mail from Cologne, so I haven't heard it yet but Tobias Thomas played "Country Boy" at MELT festival and it was pure bliss in that context...

It's really good. "Voodoo" and "Country Boy" are standouts. But really the whole thing is wonderful. People will eventually hear this and be talking a lot about it.

why do these guys think they have to sing? music sounds good. voice and lyrics are shit. pantha du prince does this sound better and doesn't plaster his voice over every track. probably will never play this again after this first pass is over.

It's really good, like the first album but just... more so. Joanna is ridiculously good, like he sat in the studio and went "hmmmm, Happiness is great, Mushroom is really great, what happens if I combine them?"

yeah i kinda agree with this, he is pretty damn talented but far better at eldtritch techno than this sort of tawdry singsongy stuff.

not going to liveblog but it seems to be improving by halfway....

I may force myself to get over the vocals because it really is quite nice musically.

Also, WTF references to IV drug use and smoking blow. Reminds me of the come-down techno experienced ~92 but this time the shine has been lifted off the Berlin/minimal scene.

I like the fragility of his vocals - it stops the goofy lines from seeming too outright wacky, and adds this weird kind of emotional pull to tunes like Friday Night (or most of the first album for that matter).

he has this sort of too-close sotto voce leeriness as if he's trying to lullaby a baby into a nightmare

thought 'black magic' was his remix of 'iridium' for a second but no such luck

This is really good - much better than "Rabbits in a Hurry" and "Lapdance" would have made me expect. "Country Boy" is fantastic. Certainly more listenable than his first album, and probably more so than the Supermayer album?

Oh boy, this album is going to keep on giving for some time to come. There's so much going on. Got it yesterday, the 3LP release is beautifully done. Sir Positive gets some credits lol (melodica of course). Also, I hadn't noticed it through laptop speakers (ugh) but on headphones it came through clear enough alright: the "I Zimbra" sample in "Rabbits in a hurry"! More later.

Bought this yesterday, I've played the first 5-6 tracks a couple times and it's a good, slow-burning album.

Is the title on this a callout to Miles Davis's Filles de Kilimanjaro, or is that just coincidence?

It immediately brings to mind The Teardrop Explodes for me, but hey...

'rabbits in a hurry' sounds like a bad flight of the conchords song.

Pretty sure I heard Michael Mayer play Rabbits In A Hurry out last December - is that possible? Those wooping noises are kind of distinctive.

The LP was originally due at the start of the year so it's pretty likely at least Rabbits in a Hurry was finished even before December.

I've been listening to Joanna on repeat and can't help but think that she's a pseudonym for a drug. The melody is so hypnotic.

kinda felt this at first but wow has the album grown on me! country boy + amanda are two of my favorite things so far this year

Only so far?

Production on this is luscious, but too many of his vocals / melodies remind me of something else, that was probably sung better.

that rabbits video is insufferable

yeah, perfectly highlights the lazy pointless meandering quality to the vocals. i can forgive the vocals on most of the album, but rabbits is one of the worst in that regard.

i like Moon Fever and Give Me My Heart Back but a lot of this just sounds kinda Tosca-ish/K7 type average fare to me.

Hah, it's that middle section that I always end up skipping.
