Superpitcher - Kilimanjaro

There's probably a bit of chat about this across various threads but it deserves its own space I feel.

Out today. Really psyched to hear it.

Matt DC, Monday, 6 September 2010 12:54 (fifteen years ago)

There's some talk on the one and only Superpitcher thread but an album with a 6 year gestation time deserves its own place on ILM.
It's in the mail from Cologne, so I haven't heard it yet but Tobias Thomas played "Country Boy" at MELT festival and it was pure bliss in that context...

willem, Monday, 6 September 2010 13:00 (fifteen years ago)

It's really good. "Voodoo" and "Country Boy" are standouts. But really the whole thing is wonderful. People will eventually hear this and be talking a lot about it.

The return of the king....so psyched for this!

I see what this is (Local Garda), Monday, 6 September 2010 17:08 (fifteen years ago)

why do these guys think they have to sing? music sounds good. voice and lyrics are shit. pantha du prince does this sound better and doesn't plaster his voice over every track. probably will never play this again after this first pass is over.

goofy-as-hell lyrics but i still <3 mr. schaufler

avinha, Monday, 6 September 2010 17:46 (fifteen years ago)

It's really good, like the first album but just... more so. Joanna is ridiculously good, like he sat in the studio and went "hmmmm, Happiness is great, Mushroom is really great, what happens if I combine them?"

yeah i kinda agree with this, he is pretty damn talented but far better at eldtritch techno than this sort of tawdry singsongy stuff.

not going to liveblog but it seems to be improving by halfway....

no time for the prussian death cult (nakhchivan), Monday, 6 September 2010 21:36 (fifteen years ago)

I may force myself to get over the vocals because it really is quite nice musically.

brotherlovesdub, Monday, 6 September 2010 21:41 (fifteen years ago)

Also, WTF references to IV drug use and smoking blow. Reminds me of the come-down techno experienced ~92 but this time the shine has been lifted off the Berlin/minimal scene.

brotherlovesdub, Monday, 6 September 2010 21:44 (fifteen years ago)

what's eldtritch techno

zvookster, Monday, 6 September 2010 21:44 (fifteen years ago)

I like the fragility of his vocals - it stops the goofy lines from seeming too outright wacky, and adds this weird kind of emotional pull to tunes like Friday Night (or most of the first album for that matter).

Matt DC, Monday, 6 September 2010 21:47 (fifteen years ago)

he has this sort of too-close sotto voce leeriness as if he's trying to lullaby a baby into a nightmare

thought 'black magic' was his remix of 'iridium' for a second but no such luck

no time for the prussian death cult (nakhchivan), Monday, 6 September 2010 21:55 (fifteen years ago)

His voice sounds great on Voodoo!

Why do you, Why do you, Why do you Voodoo!

Mean little girl with ya dirty little ....

Why do you do these silly little things.....etc

du mein bestie (micarl), Monday, 6 September 2010 22:01 (fifteen years ago)

the last track is rly nice

This is really good - much better than "Rabbits in a Hurry" and "Lapdance" would have made me expect. "Country Boy" is fantastic. Certainly more listenable than his first album, and probably more so than the Supermayer album?

with hidden noise, Tuesday, 7 September 2010 23:53 (fifteen years ago)

The first album is way better than the Supermayer album!

Matt DC, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 08:48 (fifteen years ago)

Oh boy, this album is going to keep on giving for some time to come. There's so much going on. Got it yesterday, the 3LP release is beautifully done. Sir Positive gets some credits lol (melodica of course). Also, I hadn't noticed it through laptop speakers (ugh) but on headphones it came through clear enough alright: the "I Zimbra" sample in "Rabbits in a hurry"! More later.

this sounds great on a train at night

What does Ronan think of it?

hang on

oh ok then

Nano McPhee (admrl), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 01:25 (fifteen years ago)

Haha...I've not heard yet. Haven't had a chance...

I see what this is (Local Garda), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 08:04 (fifteen years ago)

Bought this yesterday, I've played the first 5-6 tracks a couple times and it's a good, slow-burning album.

Is the title on this a callout to Miles Davis's Filles de Kilimanjaro, or is that just coincidence?

with hidden noise, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 15:37 (fifteen years ago)

It immediately brings to mind The Teardrop Explodes for me, but hey...

'rabbits in a hurry' sounds like a bad flight of the conchords song.

ledge, Monday, 27 September 2010 09:59 (fifteen years ago)

Pretty sure I heard Michael Mayer play Rabbits In A Hurry out last December - is that possible? Those wooping noises are kind of distinctive.

Matt DC, Monday, 27 September 2010 10:07 (fifteen years ago)

The LP was originally due at the start of the year so it's pretty likely at least Rabbits in a Hurry was finished even before December.

du mein bestie (micarl), Monday, 27 September 2010 10:08 (fifteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

I've been listening to Joanna on repeat and can't help but think that she's a pseudonym for a drug. The melody is so hypnotic.

one month passes...

pantha du prince does this sound better and doesn't plaster his voice over every track.

kinda felt this at first but wow has the album grown on me! country boy + amanda are two of my favorite things so far this year

straight old fashioned, virgin (another al3x), Monday, 6 December 2010 02:48 (fifteen years ago)

Only so far?

Captain Ostensible (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 6 December 2010 06:39 (fifteen years ago)

Production on this is luscious, but too many of his vocals / melodies remind me of something else, that was probably sung better.

Captain Ostensible (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 6 December 2010 06:42 (fifteen years ago)

that rabbits video is insufferable

oscar, Monday, 6 December 2010 07:04 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, perfectly highlights the lazy pointless meandering quality to the vocals. i can forgive the vocals on most of the album, but rabbits is one of the worst in that regard.

Pantha Du Prince doesn't actually do this sound in the first place.

Matt DC, Monday, 6 December 2010 09:46 (fifteen years ago)

i like Moon Fever and Give Me My Heart Back but a lot of this just sounds kinda Tosca-ish/K7 type average fare to me.

modrić in paradise (blueski), Monday, 6 December 2010 15:39 (fifteen years ago)

Hah, it's that middle section that I always end up skipping.
