Previously: Part Diez. Back after a bit of a break; I think Matador’s output starts getting better right about now, too.

Belle and Sebastian -- I'm Waking Up To Us

This is around when I stopped giving a toss about any of the bands on the label. Yo La Tengo's hideously bad Summer Sun was the clincher.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 6 September 2010 18:19 (fifteen years ago)

Sounds of the Sounds

Summer Sun, and everything since from them, really have been awful.

Donovan Dagnabbit (WmC), Monday, 6 September 2010 18:21 (fifteen years ago)

Mass Romantic all the way

Zeno, Monday, 6 September 2010 19:59 (fifteen years ago)

Mark Eitzel- Invisible Man

Mel Gibson, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty & the current King of Sweden (President Keyes), Monday, 6 September 2010 20:06 (fifteen years ago)

I still haven't heard Summer Sun, or any of YLT's recent records. Looks like I'm not missing anything!

This is the point where I got over wanting Mary Timony to make another Pirate Prude and realized that she might possibly know something I didn't know. So slap my ass with a wiccan unicorn sticker and put in my vote for Golden Dove.

Aereogramme's A Story In White is such an amazing album that i have completely forgot about. because of this thread will dig it out and play it.

Bee OK, Monday, 6 September 2010 23:41 (fifteen years ago)

turn on the bright lights, unfortunately

the behringer escape plan (electricsound), Monday, 6 September 2010 23:49 (fifteen years ago)

Voted "Letter From An Occupant" but could have voted "Drop"

Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 7 September 2010 00:03 (fifteen years ago)

Universal Truths and Cycles, though the Hardcore UFOs box set was amazing too. GBV leaving the major label race for good and returning to Matador was quite a momentous occasion, as they say...

Yeah, from my perspective at the time, that and Interpol's debut were the things that made people go "Hey, Matador's getting interesting again."

The Red Thread is an underrated album, but I may have to give this to Drop.

Baluchistan of Landscape Avocado (Pillbox), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 00:50 (fifteen years ago)

Drop

mizzell, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 01:44 (fifteen years ago)

Arsonists album is fuckin dope, whats the actual catalog number on it?

morbetoragus (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 03:08 (fifteen years ago)

OLE-476

the behringer escape plan (electricsound), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 03:12 (fifteen years ago)

OK then, voting Mogwai

morbetoragus (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 03:14 (fifteen years ago)

New Pornos all the way.

scott pgwp (pgwp), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 04:48 (fifteen years ago)

I was really into Matador at the time but looking back on this list, I'm not sure why. Voted TOTBL and moved on with my life.

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 04:53 (fifteen years ago)

Summer Sun was my introduction to YLT, it gets my vote. Tho, Mass Romantic is a close second. I must have listened to that album 20 times the week it came out.

Mr. John "Manalishi" Abbott (Viceroy), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 05:43 (fifteen years ago)

Got most of the way down the list thinking "There's nothing to vote for here" & then got the horrible GBV or NPs dilemma. NPs it is though.

Cornelius - Drop no question

BAN BELOUIS SOME (jjjusten), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 15:31 (fifteen years ago)

I remember thinking that Mogwai was immense at the time, and in my head it's the last really good thing they did. On the other hand even then it seemed like it might not quite need to be 20 minutes long, and I can't say I've dug it out for years. Similarly, liked the Aereogramme, never play it any more.

Love both the Cornelius releases, but the non-promo version of Point came up ages ago, didn't it? (Why does the promo have a catalogue number which is 200 higher?)

So, I guess it's between "Drop" and "My Father My King". I'm sure the GBV box set is great but I don't have it. Maybe I should! Is it still in print?

vampire headphase (a passing spacecadet), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 15:41 (fifteen years ago)

licensing issues with Trattoria probs.

Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 15:46 (fifteen years ago)

Regarding the Cornelius 'Point' catalogue number weirdness, it could just be a case of the project being confirmed internally within Matador and assigned the number, and then subsequently delayed for whatever reason.

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 15:56 (fifteen years ago)

Top five:

OLE-503 Arab Strap -- The Red Thread
OLE-522 Bardo Pond/Mogwai -- Split 10" Tour Single
OLE-538 Mogwai -- My Father My King
OLE-545 Interpol -- Turn On The Bright Lights
OLE-548 Yo La Tengo -- Summer Sun

My favorite Arab Strap album (hard to judge their "best") vs. awesome split vs. Mogwai's second-best EP vs. Interpol's best album vs. Yo La Tengo's seventh- or eighth-best... hmmm, who knows. I voted Arab Strap.

Next poll will be up tomorrow, too busy with work and shite to get it done today.

Also, I just remembered I have that Preston School of Industry album. I don't know why.

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Monday, 13 September 2010 22:49 (fifteen years ago)

I have it because the first single (which I do not remember at all now) made me think "oh, this is what I actually liked abt Pavement, that Malkmus album was a snooze" and then it was pretty lousy and no used CD shop in the country would buy it off me

things I have learnt from this thread: the Aereogramme album has not aged well, and the Bionaut album (which I had somehow not heard of before) is pleasant but not as good as I hoped it would be

vampire headphase (a passing spacecadet), Monday, 13 September 2010 23:05 (fifteen years ago)

Part Doce is now up. Enjoy!
