I'm just your longtime curse: DARKLANDS by THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN, POLL OF

where are all the J&MC polls on ILX? I've always preferred this one to psychocandy. it's a more difficult poll for sure - much more even front to back. what a vibe this album gives me - I want to ride trains during the evening and sit and watch the fields roll by.

darklands 11
april skies 10

This isn't as good as Psychocandy but it's pretty good. Happy when it rains used to make me happy so I'll vote for that.

April Skies/Happy When It Rains are the same song but what a song.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 7 September 2010 00:46 (fifteen years ago)

Of course it's between "April Skies" and "Happy When It Rains" though "Down On Me" and "On the Wall" are my idiosyncratic affections here.

I'll take "Happy When It Rains" because when I was a kid this was THE SONG. And because the line "Things vaporize and rise to the sky" taught me, for the first time, about

a) internal rhyme

and

b) diction control (the surprising and wonderful scientific interjection of "vaporize")

April Skies/Happy When It Rains are the same song but what a song.

yeah. gave the edge to "happy" because it's the one i had the most recent craving to hear.

loved this album to death when it came out. first semester of my freshman year of college, timing couldn't have been better.

a tenth level which features a single castle (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 7 September 2010 02:57 (fifteen years ago)

think the title track is being underrated here

grandma: smells and textures :: 180 (dayo), Tuesday, 7 September 2010 02:58 (fifteen years ago)

title track is great. it's like the album's mission statement. "to talk in rhyme with my chaotic soul." "all things end in nothing." like i said, i'm glad i heard this when i was 18, because if i hadn't bee 18 i might not have loved it as much.

special nod also to "cherry came too," which is maybe too cute but does their thing pretty perfectly.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Sunday, 12 September 2010 23:01 (fifteen years ago)

haha Alfred is right & it's between those two but I went with "Happy When It Rains" for the "do do do" part over "April Skies"s "ooh ooh ooh"s part.

I like the structure of both songs: in "April Skies" e.g. there's the "sacrifice myself for you" part which sounds like a chorus, but they hold off the song's title until the next chorus. They pull the same trick in "Happy When It Rains".

Next for me is "Darklands" & "On the Wall" & "Cherry Came Too"...wish I'd have seen this poll earlier since it's a good one to talk about & I missed that window & gotta run now...

Euler, Sunday, 12 September 2010 23:37 (fifteen years ago)

not much talking happened at all tbh ;_;

hopefully the psychocandy one will be more divisive

waka flocka flame for all time (dayo), Sunday, 12 September 2010 23:42 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I went with "Happy When It Rains" too.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 September 2010 00:01 (fifteen years ago)

"Cherry Came Too" for it's sweet little Beach Boys rip of a tune but this isn't anywhere near the first album really.

Eejit Piaf (Noodle Vague), Monday, 13 September 2010 00:02 (fifteen years ago)

the languidness of the opening chords and carefully measured drumbeat of 'darklands' wins it for me

waka flocka flame for all time (dayo), Monday, 13 September 2010 00:09 (fifteen years ago)

Not trying to be contrarian, and I'm fine with the apparent winner, but I'd go w/Nine Million Rainy Days. Maybe 'cause it's more in line w/Psychocandy. Just graft some feedback onto it and you could totally put it on the first album.

dlp9001, Monday, 13 September 2010 00:09 (fifteen years ago)

just two dudes and a drum machine

waka flocka flame for all time (dayo), Monday, 13 September 2010 00:10 (fifteen years ago)

xpost. Wrote that just before re-listening to the track, and was happy to find that it's better than I'd remembered!

dlp9001, Monday, 13 September 2010 00:11 (fifteen years ago)

s/t tracak

like this much more than psychocandy

waka flocka flame for all time (dayo), Monday, 13 September 2010 00:15 (fifteen years ago)

I like it more than Psychocandy too; or at least I listen to it a lot more than Psychocandy. I like tuneful JAMC more than screetchy JAMC (when they pull both off at the same time it's obv. better).

Euler, Monday, 13 September 2010 02:00 (fifteen years ago)

my introduction album to this band, going with "Happy When It Rains." i'm gloomy like that.

Bee OK, Monday, 13 September 2010 03:24 (fifteen years ago)

Psychocandy is all tunes. Just with a light fluffy topping of scree for extra deliciousness.

Eejit Piaf (Noodle Vague), Monday, 13 September 2010 07:08 (fifteen years ago)

Damn I wish I'd voted "Fall" now.

Eejit Piaf (Noodle Vague), Monday, 13 September 2010 07:09 (fifteen years ago)

April Skies/Happy When It Rains are the same song but what a song.

Correct. I went with "April Skies" because the other one inspired that awful Garbage tune of the same name.

Nah: "Only Happy When It Rains" >>>>>>> "Happy When It Rains"

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 September 2010 17:27 (fifteen years ago)

my challop:

barbed wire kisses > psychocandy >>> darklands

Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Monday, 13 September 2010 17:32 (fifteen years ago)

casting a contrarian vote for the closing tune

Dr. Lol Evans (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 13 September 2010 19:44 (fifteen years ago)

Argh, why the short timescale on this? I am not going to get a chance to listen to it again before I vote.

I seem to remember loving Nine Million Rainy Days but argh. There are songs i don't remember.

I used to <3 this album so much. It's totally the comedown record to Psychocandy's fizzy buzz. JAMC always do one upbeat (for them) pop album then a miserable acousticy album to follow, then back to the pop.

cymose corymb (Karen D. Tregaskin), Monday, 13 September 2010 19:54 (fifteen years ago)

Cherry Came Too.

rare that every song gets a vote!

Dr. Lol Evans (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 13 September 2010 23:02 (fifteen years ago)

xpost. After all these years I still don't know what a challop is, but totally agree with:

barbed wire kisses > psychocandy >>> darklands

(But I still like them all.)

dlp9001, Monday, 13 September 2010 23:34 (fifteen years ago)

challenging opinion

Dr. Lol Evans (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 13 September 2010 23:36 (fifteen years ago)

lol I thought nobody was gonna vote in this poll since nobody replied. happy to see DARKLANDS take 2nd

subtle like the g in 'goole' (dayo), Monday, 13 September 2010 23:49 (fifteen years ago)

"Darklands" gets my vote for one of the most underrated follow-ups of all time, followed by "Automatic," which surely wins "most underrated follow-up to an underrated follow-up."

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 00:45 (fifteen years ago)

Ugh, how did I miss this? "Fall" was robbed.

Doctor Madame Frances Experimento LLC (SNM), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 06:12 (fifteen years ago)

Argh, why the short timescale on this?

Yeah, I missed this entirely.

There was a rumour that they were going to appear on Dolly Parton's TV show. "Deep one perfect morning" would have been perfect for this.

My vote? Hah, I missed this poll so don't have to.

You know, one of these days I will actually have to listen to that last album they made.

Mark G, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 09:00 (fifteen years ago)

Listened to it again, on Spotify.

Awww, I had forgotten how sweet About You is, there's just something so uncharacteristically sentimental and upbeat about it - reminds me almost of the Pastels.

Glad with my Nine Million Rainy Days choice, but Down On Me - wow. Happy When It Rains -> Down On Me -> Nine Million Rainy Days is just such a killer sequence.

cymose corymb (Karen D. Tregaskin), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 12:26 (fifteen years ago)

Ah, did you ever hear Sandie Shaw's cover? It's renamed "Sweet about you"....

Mark G, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 12:39 (fifteen years ago)

Nice results, I think the top three were pretty predictable, though.

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 13:39 (fifteen years ago)

The Pastels covered About You last time I saw them, so they obviously thought so too - xpost to K8

a fucking stove just fell on my foot. (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 14:04 (fifteen years ago)

so, who wants to poll psychocandy?

subtle like the g in 'goole' (dayo), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 15:08 (fifteen years ago)

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. Impossible.

Would poll Honey's Dead, though.

cymose corymb (Karen D. Tregaskin), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 15:10 (fifteen years ago)

sounds like a challenge to me

subtle like the g in 'goole' (dayo), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 15:12 (fifteen years ago)

I wanna poll just like Jesus Christ.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 15:12 (fifteen years ago)

I haven't heard this in a loooooooooong time. I remember that almost every song had the same bloody "I'm Waiting for the Man" chord changes (not much different from Psychocandy then). Still, the title track was quite nice, despite that hilarious line "talk in rhyme with my chaotic soul".

Freedom, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 15:16 (fifteen years ago)

Totally missed this. I'd maybe have gone for the title track but looking at the results I've decided to promote Cherry Came Too to 5th place.

It is a fine album. Psychocandy will always be first but hearing Darklands still makes me feel good - such a warm and engaging album considering it talks about nothing but death/rain/pain/holes.

pissky in the jar (onimo), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 15:16 (fifteen years ago)

I still love Automatic, as well. Every album I listen to just gives me this little shiver of "I remember when..." It's stupid how much of my life is tied up with this band.

cymose corymb (Karen D. Tregaskin), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 16:59 (fifteen years ago)

two months pass...

Damn, I forgot all about "On the Wall." Kinda lame that that one only got two votes & NMRD four. Those are easily the best trax imo.

Wrong thread! That should be on "tweak the lyrics..."

Maybe. I still can't come up with a JAMC tweak the lyrics. :-/
