i'm stuck out here in the hinterlands and don't really know what sorts of things are going on with this scene. lately i've been digging stuff like lcd soundsystem, cansei de ser sexy, flying lotus, ladytron, the bird and the bee, here we go magic, etc and want to know what else is out there along these lines... you can just post up your 10 favorite recent albums if you like, but what i'd really like to know is what are the current sonic zeitgeists of the moment? what is EVERYBODY listening to these days?

If you believe the internets, if your album/ep/demo pack cost more than $20 to record, ur doin it rong. see: Washed Out, Neon Indian, Magic Wands, half the pages on bandcamp.com and half the pages on tumblr.com

My Toys Like Me

Can't get over what a terrible band name this is.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 7 September 2010 10:51 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah - I think that might be why they're looking for a record deal. I really like them though.

village idiot (dog latin), Tuesday, 7 September 2010 11:08 (fifteen years ago)

Are we just gonna come up with joke band names for the rest of this thread now?

I don't know if EVERYBODY is listening to it, but I really like Jon Hopkins' album from last year, Insides.

Miike Snow
Of Montreal

― village idiot (dog latin), Tuesday, 7 September 2010 11:31 (Yesterday)

thought this was just a mistake did u well THINK AGAIN

Miike Snow is an electronic/ indie rock outfit from Sweden, who formed in 2007. The mis-spelling of the name Mike is in tribute to the Japanese film director Takashi Miike.

srahell (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 15:56 (fifteen years ago)

Ozu (brutal prison drama) misspelt in tribute etc

i like this but it's more on the 'IDM' side of things isn't it?

speaking of which, do people still call it IDM or is there a less silly name for it now that no one cares about it anymore?

Most of these are a little more electronic than indie, but all are worth checking out:

Four Tet - There is Love in You
Toro Y Moi - Causers of This
Hot Chip - One Life Stand
HEALTH - DISCO2
Tanlines - Settings EP
Onra - Long Distance
Delorean - Subiza
The Chemical Brothers - Further

mount kimbie - crooks & lovers
baths - cerulean
james blake - cmyk
spirituals - s/t
four tet - there is love in you
and a bunch of assorted l.a.-ish beat tracks scavenged from podcasts and stuff (brainfeeder crew, this two fingers track i just heard, etc.)

this is the stuff that's exciting for me, the dubstep that doesn't really sound like dubstep and post-post-post dilla beats.

Caribou - Swim is a fave of mine this year.

seandalai, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 17:07 (fifteen years ago)

i'm gonna second Delorean - Subiza

good stuff

ciderpress, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 18:13 (fifteen years ago)

Caribou, Four Tet, Pantha Du Prince, Pawel, LCD Soundsystem, Luke Abbott, etc etc, Hot Chip, maybe almost Delphic, plus Steve Mason & Owen Pallett have very tenuous indie electronic aesthetics going on at points and are both absolutely terrific.

three weeks pass...

oooh, jdownloader makes it really easy to download youtubes and watch them in my living room on my tv/stereo setup, sans buffering delays etc (bad internet in the hinterlands :/ ) it's kinda cool seeing all these bands cool lil videos on my tv!

of all these bands that i've checked out (so far, not all of them mind, and i've only made it about halfway down this page, but) most of them don't seem to have guitars in em... are there bands out there that do indie electronica with, like, more real instruments, or is that just not how it's done these days?

messiahwannabe, Wednesday, 29 September 2010 17:19 (fifteen years ago)

Check out K-X-P's self-titled album; it's one of my favorites of the year. Does it have to be recent? I'm assuming you have all the essentials already (Unicorn's "Who Will Cut Our Hair...", Notwist's "Neon Golden", some Lali Puna, maybe some Ms. John Soda, etc.) but if you don't you need to get them stat.l

the Fear of Tigers album is some trashy fun too but I can't recall it having that many guitars.
