POLL: The singles of the Fine Young Cannibals

According to Wikipedia, they never had a #1 single in the UK, but two of them in the US. I don't think that would be the case at all these days.

Good thing (bom-bom)

Olde Executioner 8hundo (Eazy), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 04:00 (fifteen years ago)

horrible band, dude's voice is like an Adam Sandler skit.

Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 04:01 (fifteen years ago)

^ RONG

My favorite thing about them, besides the versatility of Roland's voice, was the dancing that David and Andy always did behind him.

Fantastic first single, don't really like much after that.

da croupier, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 05:08 (fifteen years ago)

I never saw Something Wild. Is it any good?

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 05:12 (fifteen years ago)

It was good back then; no idea if it's good now. Good soundtrack.

Olde Executioner 8hundo (Eazy), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 05:13 (fifteen years ago)

Love the first album, 'Johnny Come Home' is still fantastic

zeus, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 07:44 (fifteen years ago)

local radio overplayed this johnny so much that i developed a skill to turn off the volume very fast.
wouldnt call it hate, its more a physical reflex

meisenfek, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 08:35 (fifteen years ago)

"I'm Not the Man I Used to Be" = sadface jam for all time

ledge, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 09:14 (fifteen years ago)

^^^ That's my sadface jam for real. Totally voted for it. Dope band.

Hongro Horace (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 09:20 (fifteen years ago)

I've been thinking about this band recently, and had a bit of a youtube session the other day

I voted Blue, and second everything zeus said above.

Daniel Giraffe, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 10:08 (fifteen years ago)

They should re-release Blue for the new Tory era imo.

Neggin' you crapative (NickB), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 10:33 (fifteen years ago)

"Don't Look Back" is 12-string jangle heaven.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

I voted for "She Drives Me Crazy" over "I'm Not the Man I Used to Be"; love love love the latter, jam for all time, but "She Drives Me Crazy" has the added benefit of an ace Weird Al version ("She Drives Like Crazy").

Euler, Sunday, 12 September 2010 23:20 (fifteen years ago)

These are all great singles, btw. I love 1989 for being the kind of wack-ass year when FYC could have had a #1 album and two #1 singles.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 12 September 2010 23:58 (fifteen years ago)

"Suspicious Minds" is excellent too. I've owned the second album for years but never heard the first album save the singles. I should seek it out.

btw why did this band flame out after the second album? I guess it made lots of cash & maybe the band decided to enjoy life rather than grind out more tunes?

Euler, Monday, 13 September 2010 02:03 (fifteen years ago)

Seriously -- every song through "I'm Not Satisfied" generates some heat.

btw why did this band flame out after the second album?

They realized they had no more ideas? I give'em serious points for not sullying their legacy.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 September 2010 02:09 (fifteen years ago)

"legacy" being a lol worthy word here, I know

Don't Look Back 1

:(

This song is great. But it's a tough poll.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 13 September 2010 23:26 (fifteen years ago)

That was my vote too.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 September 2010 23:27 (fifteen years ago)

five years pass...

let us remember David Z, Prince associate, produced a couple of their tracks.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 28 April 2016 01:24 (ten years ago)

My first thought was 'Don't Look Back', but it has 2 be 'I'm Not The Man I Used To Be'

2rrican (Turrican), Thursday, 28 April 2016 01:36 (ten years ago)

seven years pass...

We can't build our dreams on suspicious minds

hat trick of trashiness (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 1 October 2023 14:31 (two years ago)

Which was that recent thread about the desire to return to the innocence upon hearing certain music for the first time? I was 14 when this came out and hadn't heard anything like Roland Gift's voice, hadn't ever considered Elvis' version, had no idea of any connection to the English Beat...It was all so new (to me) and was right at the beginning of my changing taste. I don't listen to the debut enough, but when I do, I still know it practically front to back.
