The ILM Fan-made BEST OF/ANTHOLOGY Compilation project -- POST Tracklists, Cover Art, Liner notes, editorials, spotify links and/or otherwise LEGALLY obtained streaming album lists HERE!

Let's start this shit already!

I'll start it off with my first comp, a 76 minute "Best-Of" Ween compilation. I basically put up a bunch of rad tracks, moved them around a bit and added and subtracted in certain areas and this comp flows very well IMO.

Unfortunately the Spotify playlist is a bit "special" because not all of the tracks were up there so I replaced some of them with THE STALLION volumes.

--------------

I'll give some people some time to post there own before I post my second, which is a Two-Disk Yo La Tengo compilation!

why don't we just post this on 77 and have mediafire links?

I'm not sure what 77 is but if you want to post links there then do it.

oooooo boy!

Okay, I'll post this one first, cuz it can probably be assembled on Spotify or whatever. I'll put up Nas when we find an an acceptable means of proliferation.

DISK TWO

This two disk anthology attempts to capture a certain essence of the band; perhaps it is a melancholy happiness, an anxious glee - the bipolar pulse and rhythm of the band. I hope I achieved this vague and pretentious goal.

Just some quick notes as I won't be on the computer to retort against any possible tirades of any people I've pissed off:

I gave the band as much as an all encompassing collection of hits double record without
straying too far beyond what it means to be a "greatest hits" compilation in the first place - the thing one buys when they're first delving into a band, or too impatient to allow songs they're unfamiliar with possibly come to grow on them. They want what they want - they want"the best". So of course I had my own taste instilled in here, but lots of consulting with last.fm charts and general message-board chatter to make sure I wasn't going to leave anyone outraged after I posted this. Which I surely have - notice the lack of Conway (I thought I was gracious to include even one: just a sort of comparison track to what the band ultimately started as. But ultimately, MBV with Butcher is the REAL MBV).

The two unreleased tracks were put in there as sort of a "marketing bonus" for "buying this album"
if they already owned half the songs anyway. Also, they're my favorites of the unreleased stuff and I needed a pause in the quisssential Loveless, as I didn't want to make it seem like I should've just put every song from the album instead on there (it's sentences like these that validate how damn good the entirety of Loveless is). I'm dying to re-edit this and include What You Want in there, as in many a way it's just a song that epitomizes what MBV is about (the innocenct humming of flute vs the assaulting scratch of guitar) but at that point I'd have included over half of Loveless on a Greatest Hits album. Despite my previous remark that this gives the people (pun in 3..2..1) "What You Want", I more want to encourage the listener to dive further into MBV's discography than be provided with every possible thing they ever need right here. That way, with more purchases = more funds for Shields to produce that one or two new albums. Also, Only Shallow accomplishes the whole rivalry of sound a little more uniquely with what, and remains even today, one of the most foreign manipulations of guitar into what is seemingly the cries of an elephant on its death-throes, soothed again and again with Bilinda's tranquilizing vocals.

Another thing I tried to consider is just flow of the album. The bummer is that with most greatest hits compilations, people tend to skip around and just choose the songs they enjoy immediately without giving the others ones a try - hence the fact that they bought a greatest hits compilation in the first place. Conscious of that, I considered completely randomizing the playlist... but I more wanted to encouragethe newbie into discovering how much MBV has changed by systematic default. Their appreciation of the bandI think would increase ten-fold by doing so versus pairing songs like "You Made Me Realise" and "To Here Knows When" with eachother, track to track - sort of bizarre, and completely disorientating for the listener who can't figure out who the hell this band is and whether it's the same one or not. What I find is that the compilation progresses from a messy static of MBV's original inception to the dreamy, ethereal haze of what they eventually came to be. Also, I would like to note that at near age 50, Bilinda Butcher I would bed any day over the likes of Jessica Alba; and Kevin Shields is clearly God.

Also, we don't have Spotify here in the States so if our puppet nation would kindly yield to good old text-based on ilXor-for-ilXors (by the people, for the people: America roolz!!!) postings that would be nice.

Short and Sweet: The Best Dionne Warwick Songs Not on 'The Best of Dionne Warwick' Compilations

The Beginning of Loneliness (from Windows of the World)
Here I Am (Here I Am)
The Green Grass Starts to Grow (Very Dionne)
Silent Voices (Valley of the Dolls)
Window Wishing (Here I Am)
As Long as There's an Apple Tree (Valley of the Dolls)
In Between the Heartaches (Here I Am)
Long Day, Short Night (Here I Am)
Paper Maché (I'll Never Fall in Love Again)
Knowing When to Leave (I'll Never Fall in Love Again)

Yes yes yes to the inclusion of "Nuclear War" on Yo La Tengo. That's hot.

Also, it's super dope to include where you guys are pulling the tracks from. I'm probably going to have to assemble some of these on my own through digging and such, and having the source titles would help immeasurably.

I was sneaky, look closer.

That is rad.

want that YLT one. I miss spotify.

Sorry no Spotify access.

I started off trying to not to put anything that's already been on a compilation, but in the end restricted it even further to the post Some Girls albums since they are the most overlooked period.

And Plundered My Soul is as much a 2010 song as an Exile outtake.

^^^Totally cool idea.

also, if any one has nameless other "links" of some kind you're free to get on AIM Chatz to share them BTW, whatever you might want to link to I don't know --- lyrics txt files or something...

sleeve note

It's funny how you live with these records, then you live without them - and then you meet up again years later and they've changed, or you've changed. The old feelings are still there, but you don't quite love them in the same way.

The first records are still lovely, but now they're all thin, like children dressed up in suits. Going Blank Again used to be a slightly failed attempt at pop, but it's blossoming into a surprisingly experimental take on same. Carnival Of Light was always lush, but now it's matured (or you've matured) it's not boring any more. Even Tarantula isn't the steaming mess it once was.

I had terrific fun putting this together. I ditched chronology and went for flow. We start at the end and move back through the tunes version of the band. They always had strong songs. But that was only part of it, they stretched and explored, and we get a bit wider and more epic as we go on.

They were always some curious version of the Stooges' kid brothers at heart, though, and that's where we start and finish. Beyond Woodstock closes on 'Grasshopper', still their finest garage moment, all eleven minutes of it. Wordless and not an ounce of fat on it, an epic you could fit in your pocket. They began with a squall and ended with a crunch, and I love them for it.

That's a bold move opening the Ride comp. with a song from their final, terrible album. But what a great song it is!

will post my doom one later after i've had a bit of shuteye, the roots in the next couple days.

xp That final album's improved since it came out and I genuinely don't think I could get through it even once. This time around it was merely 'not good'.

Al Green: Revelations
I avoided anything from the canonical greatest hits album. I sequenced the tracks according to what songs I thought sounded best next to each other. Sorry, but I don't have spotify access. And this was really, really fun. Hope everyone enjoys it. I'll post my Kinks comp later today.

There are a few of their albums that aren't represented at all but I didn't want to just cover all their albums for the sake of it (A few of them are really poor) Hopefully a Spotify playlist will follow I am in the process of signing up and learning how to use it.

btw viceroy posted on the ILE Aim thread that there is an "ilxchatz" room on aim where everyone can discuss this. Rooms usually busy until americans go to bed.

btw does anyone have a blog where links to our playlist files could be shared?

Sorry, no Spotify. :( The first disc is a chronological, one-song-from-each-album, "greatest hits" set, with "hit" generally implying that the song has been talked about more than others or that a lot of people seem to like it. The songs on disc two are more pensive and/or dark, and tend to be my personal favorites. Not in chrono order.

Great-looking Sparks comp, KP!

(x-post) Amazed KP got to Sparks before Ned did! Yeah, comp looks great, and about 90% different than Rhino's official Profile comp (or the one I would make!) What a vast catalogue; though even their "really poor" albums have something I would want to include.

Not an anthology by any means, but as nobody else claimed them ... this EP is pretty killer imo.

fuck this Spotify bullshit, as useless as the metric system.

Magic Dirt
These Singing Lessons Are Really Starting To Fuck Me Over
An Hour of Dirt
[I'm in the US, so no Spotify, but can supply a link if need be]

Ice (3:21) - Life Was Better EP (1994)
We've got another Sonic Youth on our hands, think gullible record labels. Other versions have better sound, but lack exploding effects box ending.
My Pal (3:54) - Idiot Box (1996)
For this cover (original by Aussie band God) Magic Dirt secure entrance to heaven, no matter what one may think of the rest of their songs
I Was Cruel (6:56) - Friends In Danger (1996)
The EP version is rawer and generally better, but loses the climactic scream, hence not as good
Sparrow (3:41) - Recovery! Hits From The Back Door (1997)
The "single" from Friends of Danger, one of the best cut-outs in the history of cut-outs. Presented here in a non-album version just because
Rabbit With Fangs (2:41) - Young and Full Of The Devil (1998)
Had to pick something from this generally weak album where we take ourselves a little too seriously (and for this band, that's saying something)
Dirty Jeans (3:41) - What Are Rock Stars Doing Today (2000)
Probably would have been better if someone had written a few more lyrics, but it's still the breakthrough pop single
Supernova (2:37) - Dirty Jeans EP (Liz Phair Cover) (2000)
Not great, exactly, but handy to have for mixtapes
All My Crushes (3:55) - Tough Love (2003)
"Every jumper I fold fills with your torso" is possibly the worst lyric ever written, but the guitars still rule
Love Me (6:01) - Plastic Loveless Letter Single (2003)
Magic Dirt buy a copy of "Some Girls" or something
Isotope (2:47) - What Are Rock Stars Doing Today (2004 Bonus Disc Version)
This shorter version is way better than the long one
Takin It All Wrong (4:47) - What Are Rock Stars Doing Today (2004 Bonus Disc Version)
I shelled out like $35.00 for the UK version of "Rock Stars" which is an album I don't even like that much, but it's true that the bonus disc is gold
Johnny Loves Sarah (4:27) - I Love The Rain Single (2005)
Meh sell-out single redeemed by killer b-side
Dyin' (4:16) - Snow White (2005)
Band still can't decide whether to rock out or sell out, but this hits a nice balance
Bring Me The Head Of... (3:24) - Beast (2007)
To hell with selling out. We wanna rawk
White Boy (5:25) - Girl (2008)
Yup, that's it. Loud guitars and yelling. Took us long enough to figure out what we're good at

In contrast to my Al Green comp, my Kinks kollektion (that will be the only one, I promise)is very much a sort of updating of the major canonical compilation. I've followed John Mendelssohn's lead in omitting the huge singles aside from the undeniable Lola. The discs are very broadly divided between love songs (disc 1) and songs of social observation (disc 2), though there are songs that could fit in either or neither category on both discs. Again, the sequencing is dictated largely by what sounds good to my ear.

Time Will Tell: An Incomplete History of the Kinks, English Rock Combo, 1964-1996, in Two Volumes.

doesn't really count, but 'penny lane' came up in my winamp shuffle and i was thrown because i have never knowingly downloaded any beatles

haha wrong thread :(

If no one does either the Talk Talk or Joni Mitchell ones soon, so help me god I will.

Here's Genesis. Or 70s Genesis, more like, as I would have needed another CD to include their later and inferior AOR hits.

CD 1:
The Knife
The Musical Box
Return Of The Giant Hogweed
Watcher Of The Skies
Supper's Ready
I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)
Dancing With The Moonlight Knight
Firth Of Fifth

CD 2:
The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
Counting Out Time
The Carpet Crawlers
Entangled
Mad Man Moon
Ripples
Your Own Special Way
One For The Vine
Afterglow
Inside And Out
Follow You Follow Me
Burning Rope

A pretty good selection Geir, although any Genesis comp without "Cinema Show" on it is no Genesis comp at all.

I could have easily made Disc 3 with all the leftover stuff I gave high rankings. (I will make Disc 3 upon request)

although any Genesis comp without "Cinema Show" on it is no Genesis comp at all.

I couldn't include the entire "Selling England By The Pound" album. :)

Yeah but you missed off the best track on it is my point.

I don't agree. I also consider "The Battle Of Epping Forest" to be a better suite. But they are all brilliant, all four of them. :)

ehhh the songs I uploaded on grooveshark are loading slow (and require page reload). probably because they are mostly 256kb but maybe grooveshark is just having having a slow day. at least I have divshare links

I could post a Spotify link to this, but I believe it would scramble the sequence, wouldn't it?

http://open.spotify.com/user/geirhong/playlist/3WJPwmP04ufL6ISugnox4i

This should work as long as the tracks are sorted by time added.

If no one does either the Talk Talk or Joni Mitchell ones soon, so help me god I will.

Fine, you can do the Talk Talk one. I had a damn good best-of mix going on. It was "Talk Talk Talk Talk" (Streets Various Artists compilation), "Talk Talk" (The Party's Over), "Dum Dum Girl", "Such a Shame", and "It's My Life" (It's My Life), "Why Is It So Hard?" (It's My Mix and Asides, Besides), "Life's What You Make It" (The Colour of Spring), "Happiness Is Easy (12" mix)" (B-Side to "I Don't Believe in You" and Asides, Besides), "Tomorrow Started (live)" (London '86), "I Believe in You" (Spirit of Eden), "After the Flood" and "New Grass" (Laughing Stock) and the Liquid People Vocal remix of "It's My Life." But discovering the Liquid People track inspired me to find other remixes and I couldn't find any, and the "Tomorrow Started" live version inspired me to find other live versions and I couldn't find any of those either, but on the other hand I didn't want to turn it in with "I Believe in You" and "Life's What You Make It" and "New Grass," which everybody on ILM's already heard and praised 1,000 times before, and plus I couldn't make a decent album cover, and I don't have Spotify, so eventually I just gave up. Hopefully you can do better. Best of luck!

That Motorpsycho Anthology is great! Nice choices, Captain Lorax, though why no stuff from their latest two or three albums (some songs from Little Lucid Moments would've fit neatly om the Motorpepics album, like Alchemyst)?

But hey, I really like it.

Thanks Marty. I think the Anthology rocks as well :)
I highly recommend anyone to test drive Motorpsycho

Interesting that you mentioned The Alchemyst. That is my favorite song off of Little Lucid Moments. Judging by reviews most people prefer one of the first two songs. I didn't have space for The Alchemyst

I found myself craving psychedelic stuff a few days ago so I made a third disc just for fun. I think I'll eventually make a 4th disc for completeness sake (and include a couple epics that weren't able to fit on the second disc). However the first two discs are the still going to be the meat of my Anthology.

Disc 3 - MotorPsych (thus continuing the trend of crappy under-thought disc names that aren't entirely accurate)

1. Feel (Timothy's Monster 1994)
2. Watersound (Timothy's Monster 1994)
3. Sancho Says (Black Hole/Blank Canvas 2006)
4. Blindfolded (Phanerothyme 2001)
5. On My Pillow (Timothy's Monster 1994)
6. Pale Day (The Nerve Tattoo EP 1995)
7. Close Your Eyes (Heavy Metal Fruit 2010)
8. Mr. Butterclut Goes To The Fair, Meets The Viscount, And That's Where We Leave Him At The End Of This Episode... (Timothy's Monster Deluxe Edition 2010)
9. Snafu (Serpentine EP 2003)
10. The Slow Phaseout (Phanerothyme 2001)
11. Albuquerque (The Tussler 2003 remaster (I wouldn't have included this if I had known it was a cover))
12. Abendspaziergang (Walkin' With J EP 1999)
13. Sideway Spiral, Pt. 1 (Angels and Daemons at Play 1997)
14. KR-3 (Walkin' With J EP 1999)
15. Tuesday Morning (Demon Box 1993)
16. Timothy in the Magic City (Various We'll sail out far...maybe a little too far... 1997)
17. 30/30 (Let Them Eat Cake 2000)
18. Mad Sun (The Nerve Tattoo EP 1995)
19. The 29th Bulletin (Black Hole/Blank Canvas 2006)

Somehow 'Child of the Future' songs got scrapped but I wouldn't mind subbing Albuquerque for The Ozzylot (Hidden in a Girl). I'll do so on Grooveshark
Divshare, Grooveshark (seems to be streaming better for my 256kb mp3s lately)

My musical friends,

I am going to pull a switcheroo and instead of Pavement, will be giving y'all some primo Glen Campbell action. Stay tuned.

Disc 4 - Motorrock

1. Some Real Mindfuck (3 Songs for Rut Single 1992)
2. Babylon (Demon Box 1993)
3. Plan #1 (Demon Box 1993)
4. Fleshharrower (Mountain EP 1993)
5. Another Ugly Tune (Another Ugly EP 1994)
6. Sterling Says (Manmower EP 1995)
7. Flick of the Wrist (Starmelt EP 1997)
8. Glow (Barracuda EP 1999)
9. Mantrick Muffin Stomp (Trust Us 1998)
10. No Evil (Black Hole/Blank Canvas 2006)
11. Illinois (The Tussler 2003 remaster)
12. The Alchemyst (Little Lucid Moments 2008)
13. W.b.A.T. (Heavy Metal Fruit 2010)
Divshare - also contains 'The Ozzylot' which can be added to Disc 3, Grooveshark

Don't let this thread die! I just heard an old Calexico song and was thinking they're a great candidate for this treatment. Someone help me out!

Just made this for a friend...

That's the version of "Problems" with the horn intro.

More! I've got some bonus discs I made for already existing anthologies (John Cale's "Seducing Down The Door", Richard Thompson's "Watching The Dark") and one for the Eno Vocal box but that's just the tracks they left off his first 4 albums plus his Peel session. Anyone else got something useful?

Short and Sweet: The Best Dionne Warwick Songs Not on 'The Best of Dionne Warwick' Compilations

― john. a resident of chicago., Wednesday, September 8, 2010 5:52 PM (5 months ago)

Was absolutely the thing for a train journey yesterday, thanks!

I'm looking for a good compilation of Deconstruction era Kylie Minogue,

there has to be a good 60 mins of her songs when she was aiming to be a credible artist, and working with the Manics etc.

Stuff like her work with Towa Tei and the like....

when she was aiming to be a credible artist

As opposed to those years she was aiming to be an incredible artist? WTF does this rockist shit even mean?

I mean after the SAW days, when there was a definite push from deconstruction to get her seen as a songwriter and artist.

Definitely the record label positioning of her immediately post SAW.

It gets slagged off, that period, but the whole reason it failed was down to the record company going bust.

Yes, that only happened some years after she'd left, but it does seem that the slide was happening already.

It started fine with "Confide", number 2, but the rest seemed to get underpowered marketing...

Want to prove to the world that there's more to Daler than just "Tunak Tunak Tun"!? Okay, I left it on in the end, but seriously, paring this all down to an hour, you get a pretty amazing set. Daler Mehndi takes you to the clouds and back to the safety of your own home. Since his newer stuff is less well known I decided to start with that, then end with some real classic tunes.

1. Bhootiye (2011)
2. Jogi (Tumba version) (2011)
3. Koi Dheere Dheere (2007)
4. Rang de Basanti (2008)
5. Kach Tutt Gayi (2007)
6. Patti Pudina (2001)
7. Boom Boom (2000)
8. Hum Tere Hi Deewane Hain (2000) (gettin into some Daler slowjams now)
9. Yug Beet Gaye (1997)
10. Bolo Ta Ra Ra (1995)
11. Dil Mera Nal Nal Nal (1995)
12. Tunak Tunak Tun (1998)

All of these tracks are great and I stand behind every one. He's definitely done a lot more great material than this but for approximately 60 minutes I couldn't get it any better!

Anyone want to give The Bats catalog a go?

i could... but it would take a lot of thought

Ooh, I'd like to see that - I'm actually not that familiar with the ins and outs of their catalogue, but I like what I know (and obviously love a lot of related bands).

I might do that

why don't we just post this on 77 and have mediafire links?

Because no-one demanded it- A three hour anthology of Tony Mansfield produced tracks on three youtube playlists, in chronological-ish order:

I forgot the title, which was supposed to be Here and There

Revive! Never saw this before. Haven't checked the Spotify lists yet, but so far Moka's Jorge Ben mix is still streaming at Grooveshark http://grooveshark.com/#!/playlist/Jorge+Ben+ILM+Best+Of/36058543

I've no idea why I orginally shunned Taj Mahal from that Jorge Ben comp. It's perhaps one of his most well known songs.

Anyone care to have a go at PJ Harvey? Would love a great career overview.

anyway, bump for more spotify listings plz

love this thread. came at the time spotify wasn't as all pervasive though, so there are probably fewer playlists than track lists. would be great if anyone did create the spotify playlist in the end for their chosen specialist subject.

*off to listen to geir's genesis playlist...

This thread is gold.

I made a Spotify playlist for the Clientle compilation: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1OnPvE7gAxsZHfoDtZRqna?si=qgcHz-1wTsmWaSov-RYM6w

Bumped for any new expertly curated playlists out there?

I am listening to a nice Superchunk / Mac McCaughan playlist on Spotify but I'd love to see something from one of our ILX brethren.

I made this Guided By Voices playlist as an intro for a friend who didn’t know where to start. For no particular actual reason, it’s limited to 80 minutes so’s to fit on a CD-R.

Big Thief are a band a lot of Ilxors love (for good reason) but their discography is fairly large, so here's a personal favourites playlist I made and spent quite a bit of time compiling and honing:

Speaking of GBV, several years ago I made a part 2 of their 2003 best-of comp (all pre-reunion). The version of “My Valuable Hunting Knife” is an alternate.
