Stevie Wonder's Classic 4-album run - the ones that got away

Hello. Eric recently ran the Best Stevie Wonder Song from Talking Book to Songs In The Key Of Life poll (Best Stevie Wonder Song from Talking Book to Songs In The Key Of Life) and it was righteous and awesome.

Stevie's output during this era is of such a stellar standard that it seems unfair than *any track should receive nil points, but of course this malign fate befell the following songs. Choose your favourite, then, of these relatively unloved gems.

Eric recently ran the Best Stevie Wonder Song from Talking Book to Songs In The Key Of Life poll

Wasn't me, actually, but only because I didn't think of it first.

Eric H., Thursday, 9 September 2010 16:09 (fifteen years ago)

Will be interesting to see which ones still get no votes.

Eric H., Thursday, 9 September 2010 16:09 (fifteen years ago)

But "Another Star" won't be among them.

Eric H., Thursday, 9 September 2010 16:10 (fifteen years ago)

aw crap, sorry eric, and sorry whoever started up that poll

the cusses of 2 live crew (stevie), Thursday, 9 September 2010 16:11 (fifteen years ago)

Wanted to vote for Easy Goin Evening, but I'd have been heartbroken if Isn't She Lovely didn't get a vote so went for that.

village idiot (dog latin), Thursday, 9 September 2010 16:11 (fifteen years ago)

You Haven't Done Nothing did, erm, nothing?! Put me down for that one, stat! And All In Love Is Fair is beautiful.

Overblown 80's Gated Snore (Dan Peterson), Thursday, 9 September 2010 16:12 (fifteen years ago)

sorry whoever started up that poll

Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing, lol

Big Brother 4EVA!!!

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 9 September 2010 16:13 (fifteen years ago)

The intro alone should be enough to give You Haven't Done Nothing a vote. Totally badass!

Bird of Beauty is a nice one too.

Moodles, Thursday, 9 September 2010 16:14 (fifteen years ago)

didn't vote in the other one 'cause it was utterly impossible. this one's a hair easier. "blame it on the sun" for me, edging out "maybe your baby," "you haven't done nothin," "please don't go" and, oh, about a dozen others.

fact checking cuz, Thursday, 9 September 2010 16:17 (fifteen years ago)

Def voting more conservatively this time around. Otherwise, I'd probably vote "Please Don't Go" or "Too Shy To Say" or "You’ve Got It Bad Girl"

Eric H., Thursday, 9 September 2010 16:18 (fifteen years ago)

"You’ve Got It Bad Girl"

I might opt for this one tbh

the cusses of 2 live crew (stevie), Thursday, 9 September 2010 16:24 (fifteen years ago)

I voted for Joy Inside my Tears. It is such an odd and quite dark sounding song that has always been one of my favourite songs on Key of Life, probably my third favourite track after Love's in Need of Love Today and All Day Sucker.

Blame it on the sun would be my second choice on this list, stunning chorus.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 9 September 2010 16:26 (fifteen years ago)

okay i think its between You’ve Got It Bad Girl and Too Shy To Say, though I love what Abbot wrote in another thread about Have A Talk With God's appeal to even an atheist, and am tempted to vote Contusion because it rools

Always wondered why The Jacksons are on ..Done Nothin when you can barely hear them.

piscesx, Thursday, 9 September 2010 18:07 (fifteen years ago)

You Haven’t Done Nothin, easy.

xhuxk, Thursday, 9 September 2010 18:20 (fifteen years ago)

aren't they the "doo doo wap" backing singers?

the cusses of 2 live crew (stevie), Thursday, 9 September 2010 18:25 (fifteen years ago)

Can't really hear Michael Jackson all that well in "All I Do," either.

Eric H., Thursday, 9 September 2010 18:32 (fifteen years ago)

You Haven't Done Nothin, with Joy Inside My Tears as second choice.

Haunted Clocks For Sale (Dorianlynskey), Thursday, 9 September 2010 19:03 (fifteen years ago)

Isn't She Lovely

iago g., Friday, 10 September 2010 00:25 (fifteen years ago)

Man I can tell you, the only track I skip every time is "Ngiculela-Es Una Historia-I Am Singing." I went with "Contusion" because I wanted to see it get a vote.

Wow -- no tracks from Innervisions!

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 10 September 2010 00:37 (fifteen years ago)

I'm the only human being alive who doesn't care for most of SITKOL, so I went with "Lookin' For Another Pure Love" for its perfect Jeff Beck solo and glistening Fender Rhodes.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 10 September 2010 00:38 (fifteen years ago)

'Have a Talk With God'

Love how the rhythm can't seem to make up it's mind what it wants to be

calstars, Friday, 10 September 2010 00:47 (fifteen years ago)

...as if it was mirroring the anxiety and indecision about a person who's about to have a talk with god.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 10 September 2010 00:48 (fifteen years ago)

Or about a perfectionist trying to make an album about life.

Eric H., Friday, 10 September 2010 03:23 (fifteen years ago)

Absolutely love love LOVE "Blame It On The Sun"!

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Sunday, 19 September 2010 01:25 (fifteen years ago)

"All in Love is Fair" is on Innervisions, so it didn't quite run the table.

"Blame it on the Sun" is amazing, hard to believe it got shut out in the first poll.

But on this list I can't beat the Latin disco paradise of "Another Star". Back-to-back with "As" it's one of my favorite 15 minutes of music, ever.

The Amy Misto Family Knife (Plasmon), Sunday, 19 September 2010 05:14 (fifteen years ago)

Yep, I ended up voting for "Another Star" because it's the one I was most shocked didn't get a single vote last time around.

You Haven’t Done Nothin 5 = Bafflement!

Nice to see the winner getting it's due!

piscesx, Monday, 20 September 2010 00:35 (fifteen years ago)

Sorry to see those three FFF tracks still getting zero the second time around, especially "Too Shy to Say."

Eric H., Monday, 20 September 2010 02:05 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i considered voting too shy to say... lovely song.

fuck it. there really isn't a bad one among the bunch...
