Who can recomend some good Bhangra

In my post about Simon Reynolds unfaves list I was trying to guess what new music he would suggest as his current fave 'supposedly stupid music that is in fact much better and more avant garde than supposedly inteligent music' (recent examples include hardcore, jungle, r+b, garage, street rap and ragga) and i semi-jokingly suggested soca or bhangra.

I've heard lots of good things about Bhangra, but it seems to me to be even more underground in London than ragga / dancehall, being sold in super specialist shops, etc. Anyway...after posting this I noticed a post from Asian Babez suggesting that everything I had guessed to be true! So...please suggest away. Soca suggestions (or anything else)will also be appreciated....

try the remix album of nusrat fateh ali khan's stuff - purists may not like the fact that massive attack's on it, but hey - fuck em. Also try a music club release - the best of bhangra, as well as Talvin Sing's more commercial yet still enjoyable "Ha"

On monday night newcastle uni put on Appeal, a charity fundraising event for the Gujarat Earthquake Appeal incorporating r+b,hiphop, bhangra + uk garage. RDB( rhythm dhol bass ) played - recent UK ASIAN DJ award winners - album out soon ? - and will be touring Austria, Belgium and Canada.

TOP TIP - used to get tapes at the local mela - mostly good, though trad.

I recently bought the Rough Guide to Bhangra on the basis of it being recommended in Robert Christgau's Consumer Guide column. As someone who has never come close to enjoying Indian music before I didn't have high expectations, but ended up being hugely impressed. Blending traditional Punjabi folk with modern dance music might seem like a recipe for embarrassment, but Bhangra is highly rhythmic to begin with in a way that European folk usually isn't and it sits very comfortably with dance. Oh, and it's nothing like Apache Indian, which was my only previous point of reference for this genre.

Just discovered Yaara.com, which should really be linked from nylpm, and anyway Yaara has a decent set of information w/r/t the genre in question. May I also rec. "Pure Garage" and "Pure Garage II" -- not the standard issue ones but the Bhangra versions which put new vocals, et cet on top of 2-step hits. Works quite well.

I haven't found the album yet but Panjabi Hit Squad's "Hai Hai" is top stuff.

Not that I have anything against Massive Attack, but what's wrong with "Nightsong" itself? Perhaps the best World Music album ever.
