I think I had almost everything they put out at one point. You've hit a lot of the early winners already.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 9 September 2010 16:21 (fifteen years ago)

I've heard a bunch more of the Pelt, Roy M., Jack Rose, FSA stuff -- just didn't feel like listing it all out upthread. Everything's pretty much classic that I've heard. Any duds on this label?

Would love to hear the Skullflower VHF album (love his other stuff).

I was about to say "Ned to thread" but you beat me to it and I deleted it from my post a few seconds ago.

I mean I look over it all there and I'm all "Hmm, you need that and that and that...you just need it all."

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 9 September 2010 16:23 (fifteen years ago)

Would love tips on navigating through the Sunroof!, Black Twig Pickers, Richard Youngs catalogs... and the other Vibracathedral stuff.

That catalog page is incomplete, though, right?

Didn't a handful more of the FSA albums come out on VHF? Further, Sally Free and Easy... and others?

I never did hear Wingtip Sloat.

jesper olsen twins (NickB), Thursday, 9 September 2010 16:25 (fifteen years ago)

xxpost -- That all being the case, ian and Alex in SF to thread and others besides. They probably have a better sense of things than I do with a number of those releases.

Most of FSA's stuff in the US is on Drag City.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 9 September 2010 16:25 (fifteen years ago)

Wingtip Sloat = unusual. (A compliment.)

Then there's Rake/Doldrums, its own universe.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 9 September 2010 16:25 (fifteen years ago)

Ahhh you're right, now that I think about it.

From Quagmire's pretty underrated (see also Fern Knight).

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 9 September 2010 16:27 (fifteen years ago)

Cloudz is my favourite Sunroof!. And the first Vibracathedral Orchestra I ever heard was Queen of Guess, so I have a soft spot for that one.

(+) (+ +), Thursday, 9 September 2010 16:36 (fifteen years ago)

sonderangerbot, Thursday, 9 September 2010 16:41 (fifteen years ago)

am0n, Thursday, 9 September 2010 16:43 (fifteen years ago)

can't speak for all of the youngs stuff, but the ones with alex neilson are ace. and the one with makoto kawabata.

sonderangerbot, Thursday, 9 September 2010 16:50 (fifteen years ago)

Another vote for Sunroof! - Cloudz and FSA's s/t.

vampire headphase (a passing spacecadet), Thursday, 9 September 2010 18:17 (fifteen years ago)

Youngs - yes, another vote for the madly beautiful Makoto Kawabata collaboration. His prog "band" Ilk is fab also.

kraudive, Thursday, 9 September 2010 22:19 (fifteen years ago)

Cloudz is my favourite Sunroof!

Yes. Kind of made me think it was his take on Cluster and Kraftwerk and stuff.

Pelt - For Michael Hannahs (CDR)
Youngsbower - Relayer
Simon Wickham-Smith - Butterfly Dust
L - Holy Letters
FSA yeah
Skullflower - This is
Youngs/Kawabata

Metal Lifestyle, Evil, Hatred, Headbanging (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 9 September 2010 22:54 (fifteen years ago)

In fact that period of Bowers' stuff was my favorite, before he got back to shrill feedback noise. The "Splat" CDr was really cool too, and sampled Judas Priest and Kermit the Frog.

Metal Lifestyle, Evil, Hatred, Headbanging (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 9 September 2010 22:55 (fifteen years ago)

The Astral Social Club stuff is gold. Need to hear Youngs/Kawabata.

seandalai, Thursday, 9 September 2010 23:00 (fifteen years ago)

Sunroof! - Cloudz is a must have but I have a real soft spot for Panzer Division Lou Reed and not just because it's the single greatest album title ever as far as I'm concerned. VHF is on some fucking quality control, even those Fern Knight records at pretty hard to dislike.

That Jack Rose and the Black Twig Pickers record is amazing.
Also search Dr Ragtime and his Pals. Gorgeous stuff.

Trip Maker, Monday, 13 September 2010 18:51 (fifteen years ago)

love the wingtip sloat 2x7"!!

69, Monday, 13 September 2010 18:54 (fifteen years ago)

Skullflower's Carved Into Roses was always my favorite.

Was really into this stuff in college. Rake, Pelt, Roy Montgomery. Used to email Bill.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 19:39 (twelve years ago)

Wow, haven't seen that name( Wingtip Sloat) in ages. I saw that DC/northern Virginia band do its kinda early Pavement-inspired rock way back when, live once.

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 19:40 (twelve years ago)

six years pass...

For those of us who still enjoy physical media, VHF has most of their stuff severely discounted...CDs as cheap as $2 (most are around $4), LPs as cheap as $5. Go nuts: https://vhfrecords.bandcamp.com/merch

ernestp, Friday, 29 May 2020 22:32 (six years ago)

Wow...cheap

curmudgeon, Saturday, 30 May 2020 04:24 (five years ago)

two years pass...

is relayer one of the all-tine ambient greats? I would say so but i’m har pressed to say why besides I never stopped going back and I always play it 2-3x consecutively when I do.

I like the other relayer a lot too.

five months pass...

fwiw, VHF still has a lot of good stuff available on the Bandcamp page as noted above by ernestp - CDs in particular are dirt cheap! just got a big batch in the mail yesterday:

Vibracathedral Orchestra - Dabbling with Gravity and Who You Are
Skullflower - This is Skullflower
Flying Saucer Attack - S/T (aka Rural Psychedelia)
Kawabata Makoto - INUI 3
