Was just listening to this Saturday night while relaxing on the couch reading a book. Probably my favorite jazz album ever. The tones of the reeds, and the arrangements on this thing, are just over the moon.

i have the following suggestions from jazz dudes dressed in various degrees of ridiculousness:

-they are "spiritual syllables"
-they are "throat clearing syllables"
-they are both of these

I would bet my next paycheck you'd never see anything that deep on a boyband title.

guy was definitely blowing up in the late 50s, wasn't he? just album after album of killer material. and it's all so distinctive (as compared to, say, some of the Blue Note stuff from the same period). One note and you *know* it's Mingus.

The "one theory" is what I was going to say.

I think this is the first jazz album I ever bought.

The "one theory" seems utterly believable, indeed obvious except I've never thought of it.

does anyone know what the origin of 'girl of my dreams' is? it's totally my fave on this record and it's a bonus cut. there's a similar situation with freedom on mingus mingus mingus mingus mingus. although top spot on that record's maybe more competetive to me.

the 'one theory' is what id heard too & always prononuced it "ah oom" as a result

one year passes...

I was listening to "Fables of Faubus", and I'm pretty sure the beginning of the horn chorus in the tune (first heard at 0:17), the part that goes DE-DAA DE-DAA DE-DA-DE-DA-DAA, has been used is some other tune. Not sampled, I'm almost certain I've heard some other jazz/soul/funk tune with the same melody played with horns. Does anyone know what song this could be?
