Anyone psyched for this? From what I've heard it's quite a departure from the usual Hyperdub stuff. Aidy's Girl is the only real dubstep track on there.

I'm excited. Yes, I am.
― ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Friday, 10 September 2010 13:52 (fifteen years ago)
Yep. Love their Hyperdub 12" from a few years back, and Aidy's Girl obv.
― seandalai, Friday, 10 September 2010 14:03 (fifteen years ago)
this album is vg for hangovers
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Friday, 10 September 2010 14:04 (fifteen years ago)
vg generally, too, but especially for hangovers
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Friday, 10 September 2010 14:05 (fifteen years ago)
"Need You" was fantastic as well.

I'm expecting this to be quite wussy and emo and indie-friendly, would I be right?
― Matt DC, Friday, 10 September 2010 14:58 (fifteen years ago)
indie-friendly, perhaps not. it is rather cold and forlorn. like a computer trying to cope after a mental breakdown.
― village idiot (dog latin), Friday, 10 September 2010 18:58 (fifteen years ago)
Can't wait. From the bits I've heard its oretty diffrent to the 12"s but you can still tell its Darkstar. Its more like the cover of Videotape by Radiohead they did for the MAH comp. Really dark and cinematic. The vocals sit really well with what they're doing. I think wussy, emo, indie safe is over playing it a bit. It'll hopefuly pick up a lot of new fans from that kinda area though, they deserve it big time. Darkstar and Mount Kimbie kinda deserve a vaugly big indie cross over thing they make music that fots all over the place.

Here's the single for anyone who hasn't heard ithttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cL_lgdoiL7I

Not particularly feeling that on first listen I have to say (maybe the I'm finding the ponytail too off-putting). Liked Aidy's Girl and loved Need You, so I will still give the album a listen.
― rhythm fixated member (chap), Thursday, 30 September 2010 22:24 (fifteen years ago)
it's a human league cover btw. when i first read about it, my styupeed brain assumed it was a cover of spandau ballet's "gold" and when i heard it, i was all "but that's not the same song at all!"
― village idiot (dog latin), Friday, 1 October 2010 08:56 (fifteen years ago)
it's almost as if the early tracks were forays or "shout-outs" to dubstep rather than actual dubstep tracks, and that darkstar's real sound is this kind of sad, dreamy errant electro.
― village idiot (dog latin), Friday, 1 October 2010 08:58 (fifteen years ago)
The early tracks aren't really dubstep at all, they're typical dreamy indie-friendly electronica with some dubstep elements. I'd put them closer to Four Tet than dubstep really.
― Matt DC, Friday, 1 October 2010 09:20 (fifteen years ago)
yep yep. It's only cos I first heard them on the Hyperdub comps (and that they're 140bpm) that I make the obvious association.
― village idiot (dog latin), Friday, 1 October 2010 10:07 (fifteen years ago)
There's a really dubsteppy drop in Need You which is wicked.

Oh wow thanks!
― i'm just saying let ilxor say something nice to me ffs (ilxor), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 02:38 (fifteen years ago)
Not really feeling this on first listen - Aidy's Girl is still the standout track.
― seandalai, Tuesday, 12 October 2010 16:03 (fifteen years ago)
Yes, Aidy's Girl is def the heart of the thing.
― village idiot (dog latin), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 16:15 (fifteen years ago)
Listening on NPR, obviously Aidy's Girl is the star of the show (it would be on most electronic albums this year...) but I'm getting exactly what I wanted from this album -- more emphasis on textures, synths, moods than beats. Endlessly playable; I've had the album on repeat the past 3 hours and it's not gotten old. Really hope the production's gorgeous when it hits CD, it's hard to tell whether it's any good as a streaming online thing.
― more than ever convinced ilxor is a sock (ilxor), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 18:52 (fifteen years ago)
I wholeheartedly approve this album, especially Two Chords, the intro track, and of course, Aidy's Girl
― mh, Monday, 18 October 2010 19:11 (fifteen years ago)
textures, synths, moods and beats are not mutually exclusive. darkstar is false dance.
― moonship journey to baja, Monday, 18 October 2010 19:39 (fifteen years ago)
what a feeling
― Waldstein Sinatra (Paul in Santa Cruz), Monday, 18 October 2010 19:42 (fifteen years ago)
is anyone pitching this as dance?
― mh, Monday, 18 October 2010 19:46 (fifteen years ago)
i haven't been feeling the stuff i've heard, and even listening to 'two chords' on its own doesn't really do it, but damn does it pop out of that burial + kode9 mix, wow.
― bows don't kill people, arrows do (Jordan), Friday, 22 October 2010 15:43 (fifteen years ago)
i haven't been feeling the stuff i've heard
except for the previously-released singles, this is how i feel, too.
― Daniel, Esq., Friday, 22 October 2010 15:50 (fifteen years ago)
Well, it's finally moved from "click here to buy" to "click here to listen" on Spotify so I will do so. And hope it has enough bass for me.
― Wheal Dream, Friday, 22 October 2010 17:26 (fifteen years ago)
How is the live show from these guys?
― o0o00h really? (boxedjoy), Monday, 14 February 2011 14:19 (fifteen years ago)
dreadful
― tbch, i only see piranhas (tpp), Monday, 14 February 2011 18:33 (fifteen years ago)
damn, I just bought a ticket for it with reasonable expectations
― o0o00h really? (boxedjoy), Monday, 14 February 2011 21:07 (fifteen years ago)
For anyone who may be interested, the live show wasn't awful but it wasn't great, no Aidy's Girl A Computer and a very grey vibe, my chillwave-loving friend was more into it than I was.
― o0o00h really? (boxedjoy), Thursday, 17 February 2011 00:01 (fifteen years ago)
so these guys are signed to Warp now, right?
― Damn this thread seems so....different without ilxor (ilxor), Thursday, 17 February 2011 02:43 (fifteen years ago)
lol was just gonna revive this thread for the purpose of saying that these guys' live show pretty much sucks balls
feel bad for the Verve tribute band missing its singer too
― Jari Litmandem (DJ Mencap), Friday, 25 February 2011 15:57 (fifteen years ago)
wasn't the best live but then the venue i saw them in didn't really have a bass friendly system either so sonically it was hard to tell. visually dull as dishwater.
― stirmonster, Saturday, 26 February 2011 00:10 (fifteen years ago)
new album sounds like Animal Collective
― Number None, Monday, 21 January 2013 02:06 (thirteen years ago)
the record cover certainly looks that way
― Jaap and roids (NickB), Thursday, 31 January 2013 12:56 (thirteen years ago)
can't decide what i think about this one.
― monotony, Thursday, 31 January 2013 12:59 (thirteen years ago)
this certainly doesn't sound at all like the work of a group that made "aidy's girl is a computer".
It is like a totally different group! "Hold Me Down" is really good.
― boxedjoy, Thursday, 31 January 2013 20:52 (thirteen years ago)
The two remix EPs are really good, they should have tampered more with their originals when they were putting together this second album.
