some dude, Monday, 13 September 2010 14:56 (fifteen years ago)

bottom 5 imo:

2006 Panic! at the Disco — "I Write Sins Not Tragedies"
2008 Britney Spears — "Piece of Me"
2001 Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mýa and Pink — "Lady Marmalade"
1997 No Doubt — "Don't Speak"
2005 Gwen Stefani — "Hollaback Girl"

some dude, Monday, 13 September 2010 14:58 (fifteen years ago)

Gotta be Brit's "Piece Of Me" or Em's "Without Me"

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 13 September 2010 15:00 (fifteen years ago)

Best is so obviously "Sledgehammer" though

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 13 September 2010 15:00 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i totally agree there -- maybe i'll do a best poll later but i felt like this would be more fun

some dude, Monday, 13 September 2010 15:01 (fifteen years ago)

Eminem, "Without Me"

Eric H., Monday, 13 September 2010 15:03 (fifteen years ago)

Also, you could have really just started this poll at 1994 since the first 10 years are all classics

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 13 September 2010 15:04 (fifteen years ago)

I remember being furious that "Without Me" won since the video is essentially "Real Slim Shady Part II"

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 13 September 2010 15:04 (fifteen years ago)

and is like even the worst of everything it was nominated against!

* Linkin Park — "In the End"
* 'N Sync — "Gone"
* Nas — "One Mic"
* P.O.D. — "Alive"
* The White Stripes — "Fell in Love with a Girl"

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 13 September 2010 15:06 (fifteen years ago)

Actually the "One Mic" video is pretty corny

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 13 September 2010 15:06 (fifteen years ago)

Oh hey, did u video nerds know I have a new Music Video column on Fuse btw?

http://fuse.tv/music/columns/take-on-me/9910-1.html

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 13 September 2010 15:07 (fifteen years ago)

imo "Without Me" as a song and as a video is one of those retreads that's at least as good as what it's trying to copy

some dude, Monday, 13 September 2010 15:15 (fifteen years ago)

Panic at the Disco EASY

da croupier, Monday, 13 September 2010 15:17 (fifteen years ago)

Still one of the most entertaining godawful emo songs/videos ever, but still pretty ugh

da croupier, Monday, 13 September 2010 15:20 (fifteen years ago)

Its so painful to me when MTV gives this award to "the biggest personality" instead of "a deserving video." 2009 and 2010 have been pretty on track tho

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 13 September 2010 15:22 (fifteen years ago)

Rest of my bottom five is probably "This Note's For You" "Right Now" "Waterfalls" (I only want the preachy earnest shit if its as nutzoid as "Jeremy") and eh, I dunno, most of these videos are entertaining enough. I've never seen the clip for "Piece Of Me" but I love the song.

da croupier, Monday, 13 September 2010 15:24 (fifteen years ago)

Guess my 5th worst would be "Doo Wop" by default

da croupier, Monday, 13 September 2010 15:25 (fifteen years ago)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tign09D5IgE

da croupier, Monday, 13 September 2010 15:27 (fifteen years ago)

haha actually I'd take Panic over VH if I think about it

da croupier, Monday, 13 September 2010 15:30 (fifteen years ago)

"Doo Wop" is a pretty good video but I think maybe "I Want It That Way" or "Freak On A Leash" shoulda won that year

some dude, Monday, 13 September 2010 15:45 (fifteen years ago)

"You Might Think" is cute and hard to hate but seriously IT BEAT "THRILLER" WTF

some dude, Monday, 13 September 2010 15:46 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, and "Rockit" too

What a great fucking year for music video tho...

Billy Idol — "Dancing with Myself"
The Police — "Every Breath You Take"
all the ZZ Top stuff
Talking Heads — "Burning Down the House"

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 13 September 2010 15:59 (fifteen years ago)

I might even be extra-challopy and say "Rockit" > "Thriller"

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 13 September 2010 16:00 (fifteen years ago)

Hmmm, Panic vs Neil Young.

"Piece of Me" is really really bad, and you know MTV gave it to her just to boost ratings back in 2008, but I do love the video for showing Britney mid-breakdown all narcotic and clearly unwillingly making all these half-arsed movements. I think they paid like $500,000 on it, which was probably what it took just to force her onto the set (she was 12 hrs late!) and make her look presentable. Shame after all that they only gave her a dreadful white fur coat and made her ~dance~ in front of a cheap neon screen and in a toilet. Still, it totally captured that moment in time (though not as much as "Gimme More" which is just crazy), which alone makes it more interesting than quite a few of the videos on the list.

prolego, Monday, 13 September 2010 16:00 (fifteen years ago)

"Vogue" and "Hollaback Girl" didn't win. It was respectively "Nothing Compares 2 U" and "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" that did.

LeRooLeRoo, Monday, 13 September 2010 17:35 (fifteen years ago)

Al Sliply

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 13 September 2010 17:38 (fifteen years ago)

also "virtal insanity", not "don't speak"

markers garvey (The Reverend), Monday, 13 September 2010 20:48 (fifteen years ago)

idgi why was kanye so upset if beyonce won?

sonderangerbot, Monday, 13 September 2010 20:51 (fifteen years ago)

Did Shipley just fucking guess on most of these or something, ffs

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 13 September 2010 20:53 (fifteen years ago)

Also, you could have really just started this poll at 1994 since the first 10 years are all classics

you are infuckingsane if you think Van Hagar's "Right Now" is a classic

Dr. Lol Evans (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 13 September 2010 20:56 (fifteen years ago)

lol @ Neil winning a VMA, I thought MTV refused to play that video

Dr. Lol Evans (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 13 September 2010 20:57 (fifteen years ago)

van halen. worst.

grodyody (goole), Monday, 13 September 2010 20:58 (fifteen years ago)

"Right Now" still irks me to this day.

(¬_¬) (Nicole), Monday, 13 September 2010 20:58 (fifteen years ago)

Just this poll being posted has made me think about how much I hate that song and how portentous the stupid video was.

(¬_¬) (Nicole), Monday, 13 September 2010 20:59 (fifteen years ago)

most of these are pretty good honestly - its the mid-90s stretch that is the most appalling

1992 Van Halen — "Right Now"
1993 Pearl Jam — "Jeremy"
1994 Aerosmith — "Cryin'"
1995 TLC — "Waterfalls"
1996 The Smashing Pumpkins — "Tonight, Tonight"

like ugh all garbage.

Dr. Lol Evans (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 13 September 2010 21:00 (fifteen years ago)

man, i'm gonna go to bat for the Van Halen video. Granted the concept is Hallmark card corny-as-fuck, but it allowed director Mark Fenske to use dozens of different styles. It's like a smash up of excellent short films united under a hokey premise

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 13 September 2010 21:01 (fifteen years ago)

"Tonight, Tonight" is great, wtf

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 13 September 2010 21:01 (fifteen years ago)

nah I hate orchestral Pumpholes

Dr. Lol Evans (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 13 September 2010 21:06 (fifteen years ago)

i hate pumpkys period and, still, that song is great.

fact checking cuz, Monday, 13 September 2010 21:07 (fifteen years ago)

wau, shaky dunno if u noticed but they give this award to the video, not the song

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 13 September 2010 21:09 (fifteen years ago)

also Spongebob stars in it

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 13 September 2010 21:10 (fifteen years ago)

yeah this is so obviously "i write sins not tragedies" which is also a horrible song

teledyldonix, Monday, 13 September 2010 21:19 (fifteen years ago)

i like those fake strings better than i like eddie van halen's piano playing. or sammy hagar's singing or writing.

grodyody (goole), Monday, 13 September 2010 21:20 (fifteen years ago)

find myself oddly forgiving of the "poooiise and rationalitaaaaayyyy" part too

grodyody (goole), Monday, 13 September 2010 21:21 (fifteen years ago)

Did Shipley just fucking guess on most of these or something, ffs

i cut-and-pasted from the wiki entry i linked at the top of the thread, which for some reason had a bunch of erroneous information there this morning that has since been fixed. but hey, i put the years in the voting options so it doens't really matter what song's listed there, you can vote for the right year. oh well!

some dude, Monday, 13 September 2010 21:23 (fifteen years ago)

panic at the disco, the band that made me realize I was out of touch for good with the younguns.

skip, Monday, 13 September 2010 21:40 (fifteen years ago)

I remember being extremely pissed at the time that "Lady Marmalade" beat out the Christopher Walken video.

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 13 September 2010 22:35 (fifteen years ago)

van helen's win would be 1000x less egregious if they hadn't beaten out SMELLS LIKE MOTHERFUCKING TEEN SPIRIT -- I mean, if there's one year I would've expected mtv to make the right call...!

haha whoops
"van helen keller"

the mid- '80s vein of hellmusic we love to hate (bernard snowy), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 00:22 (fifteen years ago)

* Def Leppard — "Let's Get Rocked"
* Nirvana — "Smells Like Teen Spirit"
* Red Hot Chili Peppers — "Under the Bridge"

I mean at least it beat "Let's Get Rocked" which is like maybe one of the ugliest videos of the decade

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 00:47 (fifteen years ago)

the fact that a song with lyrics that fucking cynical and stupid even existed in the year "Smells Like Teen Spirit" happened is kind of mind-blowing and reassuring

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 00:48 (fifteen years ago)

okay huge lolz at like two dozen things, including:
- images of wireframe models and 'behind-the-scenes' making-of computer shit as part of the FUTURISTIC VIBE
- def lep singer anticipating my chemical romance fashion choices
- oh hey the kid just turned into a... lawnmower?
- a pair of sexy legs walks across the screen
- did the microphone just grow lips and whistle? (answer: sort of, but shittily, because it is only 1992 and technology ain't quite there yet)
- THE GUITAR SOLO!!!
- a wholly unnecessary key change!
- everything melting for some reason... BECAUSE OF ROCK

the mid- '80s vein of hellmusic we love to hate (bernard snowy), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 02:15 (fifteen years ago)

it's yr cousing marvin...MARVIN ELLIOT...yknow that new sound you're looking for? well listen to this! *holds phone up to mtv playing 'do the bartman'*

people dissing "let's get rocked"... you do realise that shitty 3d graphics are gonna make a huge comeback and all the bands on "altered zones" are going to be making promos like this?

max arrrrrgh, Monday, 20 September 2010 23:10 (fifteen years ago)

Bad Romance is an amazing video wtf is wrong w u ppl

twentyfirst century br@kedown (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 20 September 2010 23:52 (fifteen years ago)
