like a top 300, done in the style of the epic heavy metal poll that herman put together? maybe this has been done and i missed it?

I'd be as likely to vote in a poll for this as anything, and I don't think I'd get it together to vote. Feel like there ought to be a better mechanism for having these vast genre-spanning discussions than the poll format, but I'd enjoy moaning about the results if it happened.

If you want a list of 300, then you will need to have a high number of votes on each ballot. We did a list of 50 for each, and many of us could have done with more as it was ever so hard to cut out albums.

what was the point system for the metal poll? 50 for first place and descending from there? when i ran that oughts movie poll that was pretty much how i did it. i figured on 50 options for a poll.

tbh i might suggest waiting a bit to do this one though since there seems to be a bit of poll fatigue after all those big ones earlier in the year, plus the new tournament style thingies

why not 50 points to distribute as you like among a maximum of 50 albums?

because then you get people who are too lazy to vote 'normally' giving all 50 points to their favorite album just to make it place

Actually giving 5 points each to about 10 albums I could handle.

Or I could just give 50 points to SAW85-92 and skip off with my low attention span.

maybe something like you can either have the albums in a definitive order w/descending point totals or in no order whatsoever w/equal point totals.

i'd potentially be interested in nominating, voting and whatnot, though a) would recommend being unafraid to lay down some arbitrary rules about what genres do/do not count (eg uk garage), b) i think a trax poll might be more interesting given that's where the focus of most of these genres is? though tougher work, yeah.

we did 60 for #1 59 for #2 and so on. We felt that would give us enough points for more than a top 100 plus it would give the lesser known albums would get a decent amount of points. If everyone knew that the 50th album still got 11 points then they would actually send in a ballot of 50. Weighted this way just meant that everyones votes counted.

Yup. Most sent in 50 and said they had real trouble in cutting it down to 50.

i would do a tracks poll too i think, since there are plenty of artists in the genre who never really had a proper album release.

Albums is easy because it's not really an albums genre, so the albums that really shine are quite easy to pick out without thinking too much.

Though it did result in a rundown thread with Bill Magill fighting with a dog over the results..

the traditional rundown (50 49 48 etc) scoring works the best imo because it encourages people to send in a full ballot but shorter ballots still work fine and have an impact

Though, thing is, the Lex is asking if UK Garage would count and I'd want to know if ambient electronic but not dance stuff like Laurie Spiegel would count so o_0 ... some guidance would be good?

If you want to avoid the usual canon suspects dominating and more obscure classics being ignored, then a larger ballot is better.

Need to know which genres are in and out. Krautrock, synthpop, jungle, acid house, garage, dub step all arguably electronic, but not sure if this is what the polls looking for.

Because I'd really like a poll that included the electronic end of Krautrock (because I think that Tangerine Dream and Cluster are totally arguable in), synthpop, jungle, acid house, garage and dub step as well as just pure bobbins.

if i was running the poll i'd actually say UKG shouldn't count but it's up to whoever does run it. just go by feel and do it arbitrarily and if people complain point out that you're the one running the poll.

agree - this is why trax would be more interesting! and indeed better for discovering stuff we'd missed.

Pretty simple I think: pure-ish electronic Kraut stuff counts, rock stuff don't.

Including Krautrock seems to defeat the point, but I'm not voting anyway.

If it's an alltime poll, you do need to have the "inventors" in it, but you dont want to be too loose otherwise you end up with the beatles in it because of tomorrow never knows.

Excluding Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream would be silly. They are electronic, not rock. Same goes for Cluster et al

As far as UKG is concerned you've got a similar split between the R'n'B-ish oriented stuff and the more instrumental stuff? Like seriously I think a lot of say Oxide & Neutrino or M.J. Cole migh fit in this poll but obv say Mis-Teeq not so much.

yeah i was figuring stuff like harmonia and that would be okay, and people can nominate whatever they would like, but if voters don't feel like certain albums or acts don't fit into the genre they can feel free to disregard them.

I assume there'll be a vetoing process in place. So for example Neu II would be in but Faust's Clear wouldn't.

Tomorrow Never Knows/Revolution 9, both seem totally justifiable.

Excluding Kraftwerk from an electronic poll would be like excluding Miles Davis from a jazz poll or Sabbath from the metal poll.

Actually, my completely arbitrary dividing point would be this:

-if it has a drum machine on it, or is pure synth without drums, it's in
-if it has an acoustic / live drummer, it's out

Obviously there would be some leverage there because I can think of some pretty bobbins albums with live drums (Four Tet springs to mind though I don't think I'd have that on my best list, but I would agree it falls within this thread) but for the most part, that's why Cluster would be in but Neu! would be out. Which is reasonable.

(Live drummers playing pads, such as Kraftwerk is in, though.)

I have realised while trying to do my nominations that I am pretty much only *really* interested in a rather narrow time and place WRT dance music. Almost none of it is American, and most of it was released about 88-93 or so. GOD I AM REALLY SHOWING MY AGE.

I don't want to be Captain Veto all over the nominations thread, but I don't think synthpop (Depeche Mode, Soft Cell, etc.) really belongs in this poll. I don't know, somehow that stuff (much of which I LOVE, btw) is pop songs first, electronic music second. Does that make any sense?
