Any good record labels out there that you know when you buy something you are guaranteed something quality, even if you havenever heard of the band/album?

Ian, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I rather like Secretly Canadian. never heard a bad record on that label.

Paula, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Constellation rocks my world.

Jeff, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Secretly Candian or Absolutely Kosher Records...not a bad apple in the bunch.

the beat, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

555, Fierce Panda, Static Caravan, Awkward Silence, Johnathan Whiskey, Rocket Girl, Slumberland, Matinée.. heaps of the damn things. I want less quality, dammit! Maybe then I'll have money for new socks.

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

the almost defunct DC label Desoto put out nothing but good records.
kranky seems to be another noncrap releasing recording label.

Brock K., Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The only label still going I can think of is Twisted Village.
For those that are no more I'd say Xpressway and Saturn.

brg30, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm beating about twenty people to the punch by adding: Kompakt.

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Caroline is good for Goth stuff.

Lord Custos III, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i think rocket girl is my current fave, everything i have picked up recently from july skies to mazarin to pluxus is all great.

keith, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Rocket Girl are ace, the only thing they've done that hasn't impressed me was the Phelan/Sheppard 12"s (which certainly weren't bad, just not amazing).

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

moving shadow, reinforced, and suburban base...but only up to about release #50 for all three.

jess, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

LTM! Gotta show love for LTM!

John Darnielle, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, LTM. All the good obscure bits of Factory (etc.) and none of the crap!

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 13 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Camera Obscura Records - all very fine releases.

4ad

cybele, Wednesday, 14 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

LTM is definitely getting up there for me in terms of needing everything...

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 14 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno about 4ad so much these days.. but with the upcoming Sybarite and Mountain Goats releases things are looking up!

electric sound of jim, Wednesday, 14 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

LTM?? Wow.. Didn't know there were so many fans of that label...I always wondered how much of a market there was for Crispy Ambulance reissues....

(Name drop alert) - - - -

I was once round James Nice's pad.. He gave me a copy of the Walker Brothers Nite Flites LP (charged me three quid for it tho!)

Baxter Wingnut, Wednesday, 14 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Everyone who loved Factory for reasons other than JD/NO or Happy Mondays will love LTM.. I'm very very impressed that there's Minny Pops stuff on the way..

electric sound of jim, Wednesday, 14 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you seen what else is on the way from LTM?

Ludus - The Visit/The Seduction (Sept. 23)

Ludus - Pickpocket/Danger Came Smiling (Sept. 23)

Miaow - When it all comes down (singles/sessions - out in the autumn sometime)

These are as essential as the Stockholm Monsters re-issues. Yes, as good as THAT!!

Dr. C, Wednesday, 14 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Trikont, Revenant, and Soul Jazz haven't failed me yet -- 'course, it's probably easier to be consistently excellent when you're mostly a reissue label.

Colin Meeder, Wednesday, 14 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Had you asked this question in 1983 I'd have said Rough Trade & Cherry Red. 1st/2nd generation él was also great.

Jez, Wednesday, 14 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Bonzai, Black Hole, Barbarian Wrath, No Colours, Drakkar, Apollo, Stimulant...

Siegbran Hetteson, Wednesday, 14 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

four years pass...

So now we really do have a radio station here on the island and a volunteer with vast experience in radio and music biz came forward to be our label go-getter - we tell her what labels we like, she gets the biz.

I just discovered Exile on Mainstream and am quite enjoying A Whisper in the Noise. I'm getting more and more into dark stoner music like Witchcraft.

What are your favorite labels and which would you recommend a fledgling freeform community radio station contact?

Maria :D, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 00:22 (seventeen years ago)

So many ace labels available, e.g.:

• Numero Group
• Soul Jazz
• Blood & Fire (they may be all-but-defunct, tho (sadly))
• Yazoo – Shanachie Records
• Wagon Repair
• Hyperdub
• Kranky
• Stones Throw
• Nonesuch
• Matador

There's a lot more, but these are a good start. B&F and Soul Jazz, at least, are British labels, so you may have a harder time contacting them. Nonesuch and Matador are, at least as indie labels go, pretty big, so they may not be so accessible, either (but I'm just guessing).

Good luck.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 22 January 2008 01:33 (seventeen years ago)

Merge!

Davey D, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 01:35 (seventeen years ago)

static caravan still has a very strong output. earworm/great pop supplement consistently release good and interesting vinyl.. label fandango and moshi moshi are putting out tons and tons of indie schmindie that you will love if that's your bag. i've not heard a 45 on tomlab or earsugar i haven't liked. twisted nerve are undergoing somewhat of a successful reinvention to cleanse themselves of the stench of badly drawn boy's rotten latterday catalogue.

electricsound, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 02:06 (seventeen years ago)

I know flowersdie mentioned Pickled Egg for purely nepotistic reasons, but I really would recommend it. Everything Nigel puts out has *something* interesting about it, and they're such a small label they don't really have enough output to have duff records. No idea what the promos to non-UK stations situation is, though.

emil.y, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 02:17 (seventeen years ago)

which PE band is flowersdie in??

i like the roy moller 45

electricsound, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 02:37 (seventeen years ago)

I actually can't remember if he's ever released anything on the Egg, I think the only stuff he's done musically has been on Sorted, but they're all Leicester types. There's a small contingent of Ilx0rs from there, most of whom posted on the Prolapse: Classic or Dud thread at some point. Bad, bad people.

emil.y, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 02:55 (seventeen years ago)

hahaha

Flying Nun is good.

Saxby D. Elder, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 07:14 (seventeen years ago)

I've always liked Half a Cow's output. They still around?

Trayce, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 07:39 (seventeen years ago)

in a sense. some of their roster aren't quite sure

electricsound, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 07:48 (seventeen years ago)
